Senate deal should avert government shutdown (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Senate is on track to pass a stopgap spending measure to avert a government shutdown at the end of the week.

The measure appears on track to pass the Senate Monday evening. The House would pass the measure later this week.

The measure drops a provision for $1 billion worth of disaster aid ? and the spending cuts accompanying it ? that caused Republicans to filibuster the legislation.

The agreement was made possible after the Federal Emergency Management Agency informed lawmakers that it may have enough disaster aid money in its coffers to make it through Friday. That's the last day of the budget year.
