My-sprinkle | French connection: Jayne goes from France to rodeo ...

?CHEYENNE ? there was a time when Evan Jayne dreamed of being asoccer star in his native France.

Then Jayne went to his first rodeo, and his career choice did acomplete 180.

?I went to that rodeo and I was wearing a soccer jersey andsoccer shorts because that?s what I was about ? soccer,? Jayne saidTuesday at the 115th Cheyenne Frontier Days. ?I bought me a pair ofWranglers and a pair of boots when I got there and came back andtold my mom that?s what I wanted to do.

?I fell in love with it and I knew I wanted to be a cowboy.?

Fourteen years later, Jayne has established himself as one ofthe top 30 bareback riders in the world.

He scored 77 points aboard Breezy Weather on Tuesday to give hima two-ride total of 151 points, which was good for 10th place inthe average heading into today.

Jayne said that it took some convincing before his familyallowed him to come to the United States, but that he wasn?t goingto take no for an answer.

?My mom didn?t want me to do it,? he said. ?She kept telling me? ?You?re too skinny! You?re too young! You?re going to hurtyourself!?

?Now my family comes over and watches me when they can ?they?re very supportive. But most of my friends back in Francethink I?m nuts.?

Knowing what he wanted to do with his future even at age 15,Jayne enrolled in a student exchange program. As luck would haveit, he ended up with a rodeo family in Texas.

Just two years after moving to Texas, Jayne won the 2000 Texashigh school bareback championship and earned a full-ridescholarship to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville,Texas.

?My rodeo career kind of snowballed from there,? Jayne said.?I?ve been riding really good lately and I?m just excited to behere and excited to have a shot of making it to the [shortgo-round]. I don?t think it?s going to happen this year, but I?mgoing to keep coming until I make it back to the short roundhere.?

After all, Jayne has proved that it doesn?t work to tell him hecan?t do something.

His latest endeavor ? trying to get rodeo recognized as alegitimate sport in France ? has been met with skepticism.

?I really enjoy trying to help out the rodeo in France,? Jaynesaid. ?It?s something that?s really on the verge of being outlawedby the French government just because people [in France] don?treally know what?s going on with rodeo.

?I also meet with vets whenever I go over there just to try andhelp out with the sport. It?s such a beautiful sport ? it shows ahuman?s limit. I am completely in love with it.?

That may explain why Jayne has also helped sponsor a program inwhich American cowboys travel to France to compete.

Jake Brown, a bareback rider from Hillsboro, Texas, will bemaking the trip overseas in two weeks.

?I get to go to France to ride bucking horses and hang out,?Brown said.? How cool is that?

?I jumped the gun because I was excited and ready to go. Man,I?ve got a chance to go to France! I?ve never been to France andriding bucking horses in France is going to be pretty exciting tome.

?I never thought rodeo would take me to France, but I?m glad todo it.?

And Jayne never thought rodeo would be his ticket out of France, but he?s glad it was.

?I had to make a big step and I really got lucky with theexchange program,? he said. ?I remember I asked permission to rodeo[in France] and my parents said no, so I just said I would move tothe U.S.?

And after a couple years of trial and error, Jayne found hiscalling on the back of bareback broncs.

?Bareback really fits my personality, I think,? Jayne said.?It?s all out and you have to give everything you?ve got.

?Bareback riding is about pushing yourself to the extreme limit, and whether you?re trying to spur your horse well or you?re tryingto hold on ? it was always my mentality. you have to give everysingle ounce of energy and you?ve got to do your best.?

It?s what Jayne has been doing for as long as he canremember.
