MUFG to pay $8.6 million in U.S. sanctions case

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc (MUFG) said it will pay $8.6 million to U.S. regulators as a settlement for transactions that could be seen as violations of U.S. sanctions against Iran and Myanmar.

MUFG said its core commercial bank, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU), conducted money transfer and other transactions with clients related to Iran, Myanmar, Sudan and Cuba between 2006 and 2007.

The bank said it had no knowledge at the time that such transactions could be violating U.S. sanctions as the transactions were done with the clients' bank accounts in countries not targeted by the U.S. sanctions, including the United States. The transactions totaled 97 cases and $5.9 million.

MUFG, Japan's biggest bank, said it held a series of consultations with U.S. regulatory body, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) about the transactions.

"Some of the transactions reported by BTMU were determined to be apparent violations of the OFAC regulations," it said in a statement.

Standard Chartered Plc agreed to pay $327 million to resolve allegations that it violated U.S. sanctions, on top of a $340 million fine in August on Iranian sanctions.

British Census Data: 73% of Write-ins for Religion Were 'Jedi Knight'

What's the number of unread emails?right now, at this moment, without changing anything?in your inbox? That would be 3,487 in the case of Jen here; 1 in the case of Rebecca. More about what that means in a second, but first, a bit of backstory: The New Yorker's Silvia Killingsworth has embarked on an exploration into the subject of what she dubs in her headline as "Zero Dark Inbox," or having absolutely zero unread emails in one's inbox. She writes, "I have four e-mails in my inbox right now, but I?m aiming for that number to be zero. ...

Struggling Against the Dark

Bussen Upper Swabia, winter solstice, December 22, 2011.

Photograph by Matzei/Wikimedia Commons.

At this time of year Slate has in the past presented classic poems about Christmas and New Year's Day. For 2012, here is a poem set at, and in some sense about, the winter solstice. (Or, close to it and mixed up with it, St. Lucy's Day.)

St. Lucy, blinded and the patron saint of blind people, has a name meaning ?light,? as in the word ?lucid.? Such opposites joined, and wielded to spur deeper understanding, make up ?a poetic method for John Donne. His poem of profound grief is notably animated by the language of 17th-century science and technology: squibs, rays, hydroptic, alchemy, quintessence, limbec, chaoses, elixir.

The performative, even flamboyant expression of grief seems functional: a spiritual exercise designed to wake the poet's soul up and out of the state of privation that our contemporary jargon calls ?depression.? The shocking energy of the rhetoric is an expressive means of struggling against the dark.???????????

The language of absence, privation, nothingness has scientific, moral and emotional force. As dark is an absence of light energy, not an entity in itself, death too is an absence rather than a force or a being. That conviction underlies the statement that Love's alchemical limbec turned the leaden soul, with its ?dull privations and lean emptiness? into the golden sense of being. The theology and science, the terms of nothing and being, absence and presence?it's all a way for the poet to sharpen the understanding of what he lacks, and what he loves. The poem's athletic feats of wit may entertain readers, or disconcert them, but it has a purpose beyond rhetoric: it is an act of mourning ... and, maybe, an act of self-heartening, too.

?A Nocturnal Upon St. Lucy?s Day, Being the Shortest Day?

TIS the year's midnight, and it is the day's,
Lucy's, who scarce seven hours herself unmasks;
? ? The sun is spent, and now his flasks
? ? Send forth light squibs, no constant rays;
? ? ? ? ? ? The world's whole sap is sunk;
The general balm th' hydroptic earth hath drunk,
Whither, as to the bed's-feet, life is shrunk,
Dead and interr'd; yet all these seem to laugh,
Compared with me, who am their epitaph.

Study me then, you who shall lovers be
At the next world, that is, at the next spring;
? ? For I am every dead thing,
? ? In whom Love wrought new alchemy.
? ? ? ? ? ? For his art did express
A quintessence even from nothingness,
From dull privations, and lean emptiness;
He ruin'd me, and I am re-begot
Of absence, darkness, death?things which are not.

All others, from all things, draw all that's good,
Life, soul, form, spirit, whence they being have;
? ? I, by Love's limbec, am the grave
? ? Of all, that's nothing. Oft a flood
? ? ? ? ? ? Have we two wept, and so
Drown'd the whole world, us two; oft did we grow,
To be two chaoses, when we did show
Care to aught else; and often absences
Withdrew our souls, and made us carcasses.

But I am by her death?which word wrongs her?
Of the first nothing the elixir grown;
? ? Were I a man, that I were one
? ? I needs must know; I should prefer,
? ? ? ? ? ? If I were any beast,
Some ends, some means ; yea plants, yea stones detest,
And love; all, all some properties invest.
If I an ordinary nothing were,
As shadow, a light, and body must be here.

But I am none; nor will my sun renew.
You lovers, for whose sake the lesser sun
? ? At this time to the Goat is run
? ? To fetch new lust, and give it you,
? ? ? ? ? ? Enjoy your summer all,
Since she enjoys her long night's festival.
Let me prepare towards her, and let me call
This hour her vigil, and her eve, since this
Both the year's and the day's deep midnight is.

(AP) ? Dallas Cowboys players bowed their heads and some of them placed their hands over their hearts during a moment of silence Sunday for a teammate killed in a car accident a day earlier in Texas.

Owner Jerry Jones described his team as grieving before the kickoff of a game against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium that had playoff implications for both teams. The Cowboys learned on their flight to Cincinnati on Saturday that linebacker Jerry Brown had died in an accident overnight.

Defensive lineman Josh Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter in Irving, Texas, for the early morning accident.

"First of all, I think that our team is grieving and they know that," Jones told Fox for its pregame broadcast. "They also know that they can handle that better if they will go out and do their work and do it to the top of their abilities.

"So it is a way for them to respond and to some degree, I am sure that many of them are proud that they have this to do this afternoon."

It was the second week in a row that an NFL team played a game one day after a team member died. Kansas City linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend, then killed himself at the Chiefs' practice complex in front of his coach and general manager.

Coach Jason Garrett told the Cowboys (6-6) on Saturday night that it was important to play well against the Bengals (7-5). Both teams needed a win to stay in the thick of playoff contention.

"First of all we all know, but we remind ourselves that there is something more important than football, and this is life and certainly the lost life of Jerry," Jones said. "On the other hand, they know the best way they can honor Jerry, because he was such a hard worker, so conscientious and enthusiastic about his career."

The teams observed a moment of silence for Brown before the national anthem. Quarterback Tony Romo put his hand over his heart, as did other Cowboys. Most lowered their heads.

Players around the league were touched by the Cowboys' tragedy.

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman and special teams standout Demarcus Dobbs thought about it before a home game Sunday against Miami. Dobbs was arrested early Nov. 30 ? his 25th birthday ? on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. He missed last week's game at St. Louis but was active for Sunday's game with the Dolphins.

Authorities said Dobbs was alone and involved in a single-car accident in which he hit a chain-link fence and a bush but didn't sustain any injuries.

"It was a wake-up call to me what happened to me," Dobbs said on the field before the game. "The thing that happened in Dallas, it makes me grateful that God was looking out for me. It could have been a lot worse in my situation.

"What happened in Dallas is unfortunate. It just goes to show what could have been. I'm grateful that I'm here and able to be on the team and go on and continue my life. That saddened me to hear that, but it made me count my blessings even more."

Radio station suspends ads after nurse's death

The nurse's death has left sadness on the streets of London, and unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding Saldanha's death. NBC's Anabel Roberts reports.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

Updated at 8:30 a.m. ET: An Australian radio station that staged a prank phone call to the hospital where Duchess Kate was being treated has suspended the radio hosts involved and pulled all advertising after a nurse who was fooled by the call was found dead.

Jacintha Saldanha, who was found dead Friday, is seen in a handout photograph from London's Metropolitan Police.

Mel Greig and Michael Christian, radio hosts on the station 2Day FM in Sydney, called King Edward VII?s Hospital earlier in the week and pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles ? and obtained information about Kate's closely watched pregnancy. They were said to be "shattered" by?Jacintha Saldanha's death.

The body of Saldanha, 46, who had transferred their call through to Kate's room, was found Friday.

Rhys Holleran, CEO of the entertainment group that owns the radio station, announced at a press briefing that the show was suspended.

"Southern Cross Austereo and the hosts have mutually decided that the show will not return until further notice, out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy," Holleran said.

"This is a tragic event, and one that we could never have foreseen," he said.

'Our beloved Jacintha'
Police said in a statement Saturday that an autopsy would be held next week and a formal inquiry into her death, called an inquest, would open at a future date at Westminster Coroner?s Court.

While celebrities have teams of people set up to deal with media firestorms, those thrust into a sudden spotlight are sometimes not as well-equipped. "You're only one viral video away from being famous," said TODAY contributor Lola Ogunnaike.

They released a statement on behalf of Saldanha?s family.

"We as a family are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha,? the family said. ?We would ask that the media respect our privacy at this difficult time.?

Nurse who was duped by prank call about Duchess Kate found dead

News of Saldanha?s death sparked a storm of outrage, including a flood of harsh comments aimed at the Australian hosts on social media, including these, published on Twitter.?

- "A husband without a wife and two kids without a mother! All thanks to you two @MelGreigHot30 & @MContheradio SHAME ON YOU! #royalprank" (@vratnay)"

- "Hope?#MelGreig?&?#MichaelChristianrealise the consequences of their actions resulted in the death of a honest person#Jacintha?#2DayFM"

- "Michael Christian and Mel Greig should never be allowed to broadcast again in the public domain for the rest of their lives, imbeciles!" (@ALG4"

Police have said the circumstances of Saldanha's death are unexplained.

King Edward VII hospital in London is still reeling from being seriously punked by two radio DJ's who called and spoke to Kate's nurse. Meanwhile, the two Australians DJs apologized for their hoax. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Radio DJs impersonate royals, get lowdown on Kate

There were at least two online petitions calling on the two to be dismissed for "gross misconduct," the Herald Sun reported.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Austereo announced that it was suspending all advertising on the station. That news came after supermarket chain Coles and telecommunications company Telstra announced they were pulling their ads from the station.

Duchess Kate discharged from the hospital

Holleran said the company was not commenting on the case, except to express condolences over the tragedy.

"We're very confident that we haven't done anything illegal," he said Saturday. "What happened was incredibly tragic and we're deeply saddened and we're incredibly affected by that.'

He also expressed concern for the hosts, who he described as "shattered" by the events.

Southern Cross Media Group CEO Rhys Holleran spoke to reporters concerning the death of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who was found dead after a radio prank call to Duchess Kate Middleton's hospital. He said that he and the radio hosts "were deeply saddened" and that the tragedy "could not have been reasonably foreseen."

Prep football: Undefeated Sutter will rely on deceptive offense in Saturday's NorCal final vs. Marin Catholic

DECEPTION makes the wing-T offense go. So, expect the wing-T-fueled Sutter High offense to have a few tricks up its sleeve when it clashes with Marin Catholic for the Division III NorCal final Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Oroville.

"We saw some stuff on film we can take advantage of ? but not much," said Sutter's senior quarterback Trent Little, a three-year starter for the 13-0 Huskies. "(Marin Catholic) has a pretty good defense."

In case you've never met anybody from the tiny farming community of Sutter, population 2,904 and located 8.8 miles west of Yuba City, show up at Saturday's game and take your pick from the crowd. Most of the town

is expected to attend.

In Sutter, they take their football seriously.

"Our fans are fanatical about it," said Sutter head coach Ryan Reynolds. "It's about the only thing to do on a Friday night."

For Sutter, playing a Bay Area opponent the caliber of Marin Catholic (12-1) is the kind of thing dreams are made of.

"We're anxious for Saturday," said Little, who has engineered the wing-T offense since he was in sixth grade playing youth football in Sutter. "We want to show what we can do against a big school. But they're a great team ? very disciplined."

The Huskies aren't bad, either. They feature a pair of 1,000-plus yard rushers in fullback Nathan Ahlers (1,369 yards, 25 touchdowns) and halfback Mat Sanders

(1,014 yards, 10 TDs). Little has thrown for 1,369 yards with 16 touchdown passes.

Sutter, the North Section D-II champion, has undoubtedly played a softer schedule than Marin Catholic, although the Huskies did defeat Enterprise of Redding, the North Section D-I champ, 34-27 on Oct. 19.

Still, Reynolds said his team has not faced the likes of Marin Catholic.

"Marin Catholic is no doubt the toughest team we've played this season ? without question," Reynolds said. "But my team is not intimidated. They're going to show up and compete and leave it on the field. That's what they do. That's how they're made."

Reynolds said his team played an offense similar to Marin Catholic's spread style in the D-II title game against West Valley of the Redding area. The Huskies prevailed 38-31.

"But West Valley does not have the passing game of Marin Catholic," he said.

Of course, the Wildcats' offense is led by Cal-bound senior quarterback Jared Goff.

Reynolds has some experience against top-notch quarterbacks. His team faced Aaron Rodgers and Pleasant Valley in 2001. That team was also undefeated and finished the season 12-0.

"Aaron Rodgers is the best high school quarterback I've ever seen,"

Sutter High's Ryan Staas raises his arms after his team scored their first score of the game off of a fumble by Orland High during the semifinals of the Northern Section Division II football playoffs in Sutter on Friday, November 16, 2012. (Appeal-Democrat/Nate Chute) Nate Chute

Reynolds said. "But this kid (Goff) is the next best I've seen."

Reynolds is impressed by Goff's quarterbacking composure.

"He seems so poised and confident when he drops back," Reynolds said. "And the fact that he's fast and can run the football, too, is a real bummer."

Reynolds said his defense, which is led by Butte View League defensive co-MVPs linebacker Ryan Staas and strong safety Phillip Robledo, will try its best to confuse Goff and disrupt his timing.

"We'll run multiple fronts on defense," Reynolds said. "We have a pretty complex scheme with a lot of different looks. We'll try to throw and lot of different things at him and get after him with some pressure."

The Sutter defensive line is anchored by nose tackle Trevor Carr (11.5 sacks) and defensive end Garrett Wallace (16.5 sacks).

"They have a really good defensive line and some good linebackers," Goff said. "They've got some big boys up front."

Reynolds said he and his coaching staff watched Marin Catholic's 31-28 victory over previously undefeated El Cerrito in the D-III North Coast Section.

"We were impressed," he said. "They don't have any weak spots on the field. They're well coached and very disciplined. I was very impressed with their offensive line. When they get off the ball they're not messing around. And they're big."

Tennessee taps Jones to replace Dooley as coach

Butch Jones has spent the last three seasons at Cincinnati, where he went 23-14.

AP

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Butch Jones wasn't Tennessee's first choice as its next football coach. The Volunteers believe the former Cincinnati coach will prove he's the right choice.

Tennessee announced Friday morning that Jones had agreed to become its fourth coach in six seasons, ending a tumultuous couple of days for both parties. Tennessee has scheduled a Friday afternoon news conference to announce the hiring, which was first reported by VolQuest.com.

"It is truly an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Vol Nation!" Jones, 44, tweeted Friday morning.

Jones has a 50-27 record in six seasons as a head coach. He went 27-13 in three seasons at Central Michigan and was 23-14 at Cincinnati the last three years. He now faces the task of rebuilding a former Southeastern Conference power that has posted three consecutive losing seasons.

Tennessee went after at least two other candidates before hiring Jones.

During the 19-day search to replace Derek Dooley, who was fired Nov. 18 after going 15-21 in his three-year tenure, the Volunteers contacted ESPN analyst and former Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden, who indicated he wasn't interested. The Vols then pursued Charlie Strong, who said Thursday he had turned down their offer and would stay at Louisville.

Jones, meanwhile, was apparently waiting for a job like Tennessee.

On the same day Strong made his announcement, Jones rejected an offer to take over Colorado's program. He also had been linked to the Purdue coaching job before withdrawing his name from consideration.

Jones' hiring means each of the four Southeastern Conference teams that fired coaches this year have filled their vacancies.

Kentucky hired Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops last week to replace Joker Phillips. Arkansas hired Bret Bielema away from Wisconsin on Tuesday to take over for John L. Smith. Auburn selected Arkansas State's Gus Malzahn on Tuesday as the replacement for Gene Chizik.

Jones becomes Tennessee's fourth coach in a six-season stretch, not including offensive coordinator Jim Chaney's stint as interim head coach in the 2012 season finale after Dooley's dismissal. Phillip Fulmer was fired in 2008 after posting a 152-52 record. Lane Kiffin coached Tennessee in 2009 before leaving for Southern California. Dooley lasted three years.

After winning at least eight games for 16 consecutive seasons from 1989-2004 and posting double-digit wins in nine of those years, Tennessee hasn't earned more than seven victories in any of its last five seasons. The Vols went 5-7 this fall for their fifth losing season over the last eight years. This also marks the first time since 1909-11 that Tennessee has finished below .500 three years in a row.

Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart said at the start of the search that head coaching experience was "critically important" and that he wanted a coach who "knows the difficulty of climbing the ladder in the SEC." Jones lacks SEC experience, but he has a career winning percentage of .649. Jones' teams have earned at least a share of a conference title in four of his six seasons as a head coach.

After replacing Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and then again at Cincinnati, Jones maintained the momentum his predecessor had established at each school.

In Jones' three-year stint at Central Michigan, the Chippewas won two Mid-American Conference championships and posted a combined league record of 22-3. Jones went 4-8 in his first year at Cincinnati, but the Bearcats are 19-6 since and have tied for first place in the Big East each of the last two seasons. Cincinnati's 2011 season included a 45-23 loss at Tennessee.

Jones signed a contract extension after the 2011 season that includes a $1.4 million buyout if he left before Jan. 1. Cincinnati has named defensive line coach Steve Stripling its interim head coach for the Dec. 27 Belk Bowl against Duke in Charlotte, N.C., while it begins searching for Jones' permanent successor.

"There is no timetable to make the hire," Cincinnati athletic director Whit Babcock said Friday. "Making the right hire is better than the quickest hire, but admittedly sooner is better if possible."

Jones' background as an assistant is entirely on offense, but one of his biggest challenges at Tennessee initially will be strengthening a defense that allowed the most points (35.7) and yards (471.4) per game of any SEC team this season. The Vols hadn't allowed that high a scoring average since 1893, when they gave up 42.7 points per game while playing a six-game schedule. They hadn't yielded that many yards per game since at least 1950, the earliest year Tennessee's sports information department has that statistic on file.

The makeup of Jones' first offense at Tennessee also remains uncertain, at least for now.

Starting quarterback Tyler Bray and star wide receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter all are projected as first- or second-round draft picks if they choose to turn pro rather than returning to school for their senior seasons. Bray threw for 3,612 yards and 34 touchdowns this year to rank second on Tennessee's single-season list in both categories, behind Peyton Manning's 3,819 yards and 36 touchdown passes in 1997. Hunter caught 73 passes for 1,083 yards and nine touchdowns. Patterson gained a school-record 1,858 all-purpose yards.

Junior offensive tackle Ja'Wuan James also has been mentioned as a possible draft candidate.
