The Good Wife Exclusive Sneak Peek: Is Will Going to Crash? Kalinda Sure Thinks So (omg!)

Josh Charles and Archie Panjabi | Photo Credits: Eike Schroter/CBS

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Or have they?

Weeks ago, The Good Wife's Will Gardner (Josh Charles) was one of the top lawyers in Chicago. Now, thanks to his six-month suspension from practicing law, he's an "out-of-work loser" ? according to Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) anyways.

The Good Wife postmortem: What's next for Will?

In this exclusive clip from Sunday's episode (9/8c, CBS), Lockhart & Associates' trusty investigator stops by to check up on Will. Although Kalinda expects to find him curled up into a little ball and crying, Will says the only tears he'll be crying are those of joy and relaxation. "I miss the law too much," he jokes.

Will may enjoy sleeping in, going to the gym and not constantly checking his cell phone for now, but how long will that last?

Watch this exclusive clip from Sunday's episode to see how Will is handling his suspension and his advice for Alicia:

Do you think Will is going to crash? Or could he leave the law behind for good?

Character Rigging: Production Practices and Techniques | The ...

Today, The Gnomon Workshop is pleased to announce the highly anticipated release Character Rigging:
Production Practices and Techniques
by Senior Character TD Axel Stanley-Grossman. The art of Character Rigging, a process often shrouded in technical terminology and proprietary scripts will be completely demystified in this set of lessons. The foundation of a solid character rig starts with the skeleton. Axel employs a number of cool production tricks necessary to construct a skeleton using production standards. His use of a few scripted tool sets allows him to demonstrate the importance in separating deformation and control rigs while using a multi-pose skeletal system. Once the skeleton is properly set up, IK and FK controls are added to the arms, legs and spine. Blending controls, stretchy IK, and ?reverse foot? controls are then applied to provide more motion control for the animators. Axel then ties everything together by constructing control curves for the rig system to finalize the rig. Throughout the lectures, Axel will highlight the most common production issues faced when constructing a character rig, and show how to fix them using a simple set of scripts and a few proven production techniques.

Humongous asteroid could strike Earth in 2040

The 460-foot wide asteroid 2011 AG5 could be on a collision course with our planet.?But the odds are very small, say scientists.?

Scientists are keeping a close eye on a big asteroid that may pose an impact threat to Earth in a few decades.

The space rock, which is called 2011 AG5, is about 460 feet (140 meters) wide. It may come close enough to Earth in 2040 that some researchers are calling for a discussion about?how to deflect it.

Talk about the asteroid was on the agenda during the 49th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), held earlier this month in Vienna.

A UN Action Team on near-Earth objects (NEOs) noted the asteroid?s repeat approaches to Earth and the possibility ? however remote ? that 2011 AG5 might?smack into our planet?28 years from now.

The object was discovered in January 2011 by Mount Lemmon Survey observers in Tucson, Ariz. While scientists have a good bead on the space rock's size, its mass and compositional makeup are unknown at present. [The 7 Strangest Asteroids in the Solar System]

An asteroid desktop exercise

"2011 AG5 is the object which currently has the highest chance of?impacting the Earth?? in 2040. However, we have only observed it for about half an orbit, thus the confidence in these calculations is still not very high," said Detlef Koschny of the European Space Agency?s Solar System Missions Division in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

"In our Action Team 14 discussions, we thus concluded that it not necessarily can be called a ?real? threat. To do that, ideally, we should have at least one, if not two, full orbits observed," Koschny told SPACE.com.

Koschny added that the Action Team did recommend to the NEO Working Group of COPUOS to use 2011 AG5 as a "desktop exercise" and link ongoing studies to the asteroid.

"We are currently also in the process of making institutions like the?European Southern Observatory?aware of this object," Koschny said. "We hope to make the point that this object deserves the allocation of some special telescope time."

Non-zero impact probability

The near-Earth asteroid 2011 AG5 currently has an impact probability of 1 in 625 for Feb. 5, 2040, said Donald Yeomans, head of the Near-Earth Object Observations Program at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

This impact probability isn't set in stone, however. So far, researchers have been able to watch the asteroid for just a short time ? the first nine months of 2011 ? and the numbers may change after further observation, Yeomans told SPACE.com. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

Frontal attack or stealth? How subverting the immune system shapes the arms race between bacteria and hosts

ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? Why is it that Mycobacterium tuberculosis can cause tuberculosis with as little as 10 cells, whereas Vibrio cholerae requires the host to ingest up to tens of millions of cells to cause cholera? This is the question that two research teams, from the Pasteur Institute, in France, and the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia and the University of Lisbon, in Portugal, answer in the latest issue of the journal PLoS Pathogens.

The researchers show that bacteria that are able to invade and/or destroy cells of the host's immune system have higher infectivity, whereas those that are more motile, multiply faster and communicate with each other are less infectious, that is, it takes more bacterial cells to trigger an infection. These findings help understand the patterns that shape infectivity of bacteria, and contribute to more accurate predictions of how emerging pathogens may evolve, with implications for public health. Despite the multitude of mechanisms that pathogens use to exploit its human host, the research teams of Eduardo Rocha, in France, and Francisco Dion?sio, in Portugal, set out to find common themes in the mechanisms used by distantly related bacteria.

The researchers trawled through scientific literature on 48 bacterial pathogens. They related several bacterial features (motility, interactions with the immune system, growth rate) with their value of ID50 -- the minimum number of bacterial cells that is required to trigger an infection in 50% of infected hosts. The teams found that bacteria that are able to destroy or subvert phagocytes -- the cells of the immune system that engulf bacteria -- have ID50 of around 250 cells. The remaining bacteria, meanwhile, have ID50 values of around 30 million -- they are much less infectious.

These bacteria rely on high turnover (or growth), are very motile, and are capable of communicating with other bacteria, through the mechanism of quorum-sensing. Says Joao Gama, first author of the paper, "In the "arms race" between disease-causing bacteria and the hosts they infect, some bacteria act through frontal attack, whereas others operate through stealth, manipulating the host's immune system. Many others are somewhere in between. Our findings suggest that the low ID50 (more infectious) bacteria be classed as working by stealth; the high ID50 bacteria are those that resort to frontal attacks."

Polypectomy Confirmed to Reduce Colorectal Cancer Mortality ...

Two studies in the New England Journal of Medicine show colonoscopy?s value in detecting colorectal cancer and reducing mortality.

In one, some 2600 patients with adenomatous polyps had them removed during colonoscopy. After a median follow-up of 16 years, colorectal cancer mortality was some 50% lower in that group, compared with a control group based on the U.S. population. (Similar findings occurred among a group of patients whose polyps were nonadenomatous.)

The other study is an interim report of a long-term comparison between screening with colonoscopy and fecal immunochemical testing. Some 57,000 asymptomatic average-risk adults were randomized to either one-time colonoscopy or immunochemical testing biennially over 10 years. After the colonoscopies and first round of chemical testing, cancer was detected equally in both groups. However, advanced adenomas were more likely to be found among those undergoing colonoscopy.

Editorialists conclude that ?colonoscopy is an effective screening test.? Although patients are more likely to accept chemical testing than colonoscopy, fecal testing ?is not a good test for detecting adenomas.?
