The Worst Personal-Finance Video Ever : CJR

Like many people, I?m fascinated by lottery tickets. In many ways they?re the purest speculative investment in the world: a piece of paper which is all but worthless today might be worth $200 million tomorrow. Literally. Lottery tickets are a bit like SWAG assets (silver, wine, art gold) in that you can only make money on them by giving them up and exchanging them for cash. They pay no dividends, and they have an asymmetrical payout: the most you can lose on any one ticket is a modest dollar, but the most you can gain is enormous.

On top of that, lotteries can be gamed, as Jonah Lehrer spelled out in a fantastic Wired story last year. And casinos can be gamed too, as Mark Bowden explains in the the latest issue of The Atlantic. Beating the odds is a staple of great narrative journalism for good reason, and of movies, too. Which is why it?s so incredibly depressing to see this being hosted at CNN Money, under the headline ?Boost your odds of winning the lottery?.

Richard Lustig is a get-rich-quick hack with no idea at all of how to beat any lottery. Yes, he?s won an impressive number of jackpots. But he also advises that one third of all your winnings should be ?reinvested? into lottery tickets ? which means that he?s betting an enormous amount of money every week. He never gives any indication of what his ROI is; indeed, he never actually comes out and says that he?s a net winner. Neither can I see any indication that all the money he?s gambling is his own. Certainly Lustig?s bare-bones website, which seems like it was designed in 1997 and which features an ad for 995SunGlasses.com, gives the impression of someone who?s on a very tight budget. And the less said about his all-caps Twitter feed, the better.

Lustig?s advice is simply bizarre: he reckons that you should buy lottery numbers in sequence, and that you should never buy ?quick-pick? (randomly-generated) tickets. In fact, if you?re going to play the lottery, the rational way to play the lottery is to do the exact opposite of Lustig?s advice. Never pick your own numbers; always accept random numbers. The reason is that when lotteries have big prizes, those prizes are parcelled out between everybody who had the winning numbers. For instance, in August 2010, Lustig had a winning ticket in a draw where the jackpot was $197,985.84. But so did someone else ? so he ended up winning only half that amount. And if you want to minimize your chances of overlapping with someone else, you?re much better off accepting a set of random numbers than you are using some kind of human-generated method. Remember when 110 people all had the winning numbers 22, 28, 32, 33, and 39, just because those numbers were printed in fortune cookies?

I have no problem with people spending small amounts of money on the lottery ? in fact, sometimes it?s a positively good idea. But I do have a problem with anybody who?s shilling the idea that you can make money this way. And I have a huge problem with respected websites like CNN Money giving that person extremely positive publicity, without any hint of skepticism about the claims involved.

Let?s be clear about this: if you buy a lottery ticket, you should expect to lose all of your money. If you still want to buy a ticket knowing that you?re not going to get your money back, then go right ahead. But spending $40 on Richard Lustig?s book is a very, very, very bad idea, not least because you?ll probably end up spending many times that much money on tickets. And it?s downright unethical for CNN Money to implicitly encourage people to do so, by running dreck like this.

Congolese warlord convicted in first ICC verdict

The International Criminal Court on Wednesday convicted a Congolese militia leader of using child soldiers in a brutal conflict, its first verdict since starting work almost a decade ago.

Thomas Lubanga, 51, was found guilty, six years after his arrest, of abducting children as young as 11 and forcing them to fight and commit atrocities in a bloody war in a gold-rich region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The judgment of the court, set up to try war crimes and crimes against humanity, was hailed by the UN and world powers.

"It is an historic moment and an important step in providing justice and accountability to the Congolese people," United States State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

Rights groups also praised the decision, saying it sent a strong message to those who force young children to kill -- including Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony, now the target of an international online activist campaign.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon called the ICC verdict "an important step forward" in making sure that "perpetrators of crimes against children in situations of armed conflict are brought to justice."

In Geneva, UN rights chief Navi Pillay called it a "major milestone in the fight against impunity".

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the ruling "resonates far beyond the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the trial of Mr. Lubanga has raised awareness about the plight of child soldiers and the fact that recruiting and using children under 15 in combat is a war crime".

The warlord, who has denied the charges against him, will be sentenced at a date yet to be determined.

He risks 30 years in jail or, if judges decide the crimes are exceptionally grave, even life in prison.

The DRC urged the court to impose an "exemplary" sentence to deter "all of those who have chosen war and murder, so that all these people know that genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity will always be tried".

"Today's verdict is a testament to the ICC's commitment to hold to account those persons who force young children to become both the tools and victims of conflict," added Britain's Foreign Office Minister for Africa, Henry Bellingham.

At the court itself, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, who funds a public information campaign in the DRC about the trial, witnessed the verdict and said she hoped it would "provide some measure of comfort for the victims".

"It sends a strong message against the use of child soldiers," the actress, movie director and rights activist added in a statement after watching proceedings from the front row of the public gallery.

Presiding Judge Adrian Fulford read the verdict finding Lubanga guilty of "conscription and enlisting children under the age of 15 and used them to participate in hostilities" in fighting that lasted from 1998 to 2003.

Prosecutors have told the court that militia under Lubanga's control had abducted children from their homes, schools and football fields to serve as soldiers, and that young girls were used as sex slaves.

In closing arguments last year, ICC deputy prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said child soldiers were "used to rape and pillage", adding: "Those who have no visible scars on their body keep the scars that will remain within."

Lubanga -- thought to be the founder of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC), and chief commander of its military wing -- was sent to The Hague in 2006 and put on trial in early 2009.

"Today's verdict will give pause to those around the world who commit the horrific crime of using and abusing children, both on and off the battlefield," said Amnesty International's Michael Bochenek.

Alpha Sesay, international legal officer at the Open Society's Justice Initiative, said the ruling would send a strong message to others who used child soldiers, including Uganda's Kony.

Kony, leader of the rebel Lord's Resistance Army, has been the subject of an intense online campaign this month to bring him to justice for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

During the trial, Lubanga's lawyers accused the prosecution of fabricating evidence and claimed that witnesses were paid to give false testimony.

Judge Fulford rapped the prosecution team, saying it had failed in some instances to verify testimony.

During 204 days of hearings, prosecutors called 36 witnesses, the defence 24, and three people testified for Lubanga's victims.

The ICC has issued four arrest warrants for crimes in the DRC and is investigating seven cases, all in Africa.

Two militia leaders, Germain Katanga, 33, and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui, 41, who fought against Lubanga, are facing trial before the ICC on similar charges.

Former UPC chief Bosco Ntaganda, a Lubanga ally, has yet to be arrested to face the court on war crimes charges.

AP Source: Knicks coach D'Antoni resigns

(AP) ? Mike D'Antoni resigned Wednesday as coach of the New York Knicks, who are in danger of missing the playoffs when he said they should contend for a championship.

Facing a late-season skid and continued questions about his relationship with Carmelo Anthony, D'Antoni put the Knicks through a morning workout, shortly before news broke that he was stepping down.

New York has lost six in a row for the second time this season and has fallen into a tie for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. The decision came just hours after Anthony denied there was a rift with D'Antoni.

The Knicks have struggled since Anthony returned from a groin injury 10 games ago. There was speculation that he and D'Antoni did not get along, though the All-Star forward said Wednesday he supported the coach "100 percent."

The surprise resignation first was reported by Yahoo Sports.

D'Antoni seemed in good spirits Wednesday morning at the team's training center and said players were, too. He acknowledged the media frenzy around the sinking club but believed the Knicks would handle it.

"You battle against it. I think we're cohesive enough to battle through this, and we expect to do that," he said.

Instead assistant Mike Woodson was preparing to coach against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday. And certainly there's already speculation that the Knicks will try to lure a big-name coach such as Phil Jackson or Kentucky's John Calipari next season.

D'Antoni's departure comes less than a month after he seemed rejuvenated by the emergence of Jeremy Lin, the undrafted point guard from Harvard who came off the end of the bench and proved to be the player who could properly run the offensive system.

But the success didn't last once Anthony returned, with the Knicks going 2-8 in a season that D'Antoni said should see them contend for a championship.

Never able to duplicate his success in Phoenix, D'Antoni was headed to his third losing season since signing a $24 million, four-year contract in 2008 that made him one of the NBA's highest-paid coaches. He never won a playoff game in New York, where the Knicks were focused on the future during his first two years and made numerous changes that didn't give him much of a chance to compete.

But they spent big this season, bringing in Tyson Chandler to play between Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, while adding players such as Baron Davis and JR Smith during the season, and D'Antoni acknowledged Wednesday morning it was his responsibility to make everything work.

New York returned to the playoffs last season for the first time since 2004 and had its first winning record in a decade, losing to the Boston Celtics in the first round. But the Knicks radically changed the team in the offseason, waiving point guard Chauncey Billups through the amnesty clause to free up salary cap space to sign Chandler, and they sputtered through January while trying three point guards to replace him.

D'Antoni finally turned to Lin on Feb. 4 and the Knicks took off, winning seven games in a row and looking like a threat to the top teams in the East. But it all came to a halt when Anthony returned, reinforcing the notion that his desire to get the ball in isolation didn't fit in D'Antoni's offense that focused on pick-and-rolls and quick ball movement.

D'Antoni averaged 58 wins in four full seasons in Phoenix before he was hired to replace Isiah Thomas on May 13, 2008.

The Knicks got off to a quick start in his first season but broke up the team three weeks into it, trading Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford in separate deals on the same day. New York would make a series of moves over the first two years, all with an eye toward clearing salary cap space for the summer of 2010.

D'Antoni always supported the plan, even as it came at the cost of his won-loss record. He was 267-172 when he arrived in New York but went 121-167 here.

The Knicks finished in the top 10 in scoring in each of his first three seasons while racking up the three highest 3-pointer totals in team history. But his offense-first style was never a natural fit in New York, where fans craved the hard-nosed, defense-first approach of the 1990s teams of Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason and John Starks. Worse for D'Antoni, he lost his biggest backer in the front office when team president Donnie Walsh opted not to return after last season.

D'Antoni became a coaching star in Phoenix, reaching two Western Conference finals. He won a Coach of the Year award and was named an assistant coach to Mike Krzyzewski with the U.S. national team.

But the Suns let him talk to other clubs about their jobs after losing to San Antonio in the first round of the 2008 playoffs. He chose the Knicks over the Chicago Bulls, citing his comfort with Walsh, who had just been hired, and his desire to live in New York.

After two years in transition, the Knicks appeared to be a team on the rise after landing Stoudemire in the summer of 2010 to give New York its first superstar since Ewing. But the Knicks didn't stop there, trading four of their top six players to acquire Anthony from Denver last February before the trade deadline.

The high price, paid when Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan reportedly overruled Walsh, put enormous pressure on D'Antoni and Anthony to make it work, and they never really could. Anthony was shooting a career-low 40 percent and at times his frustration was evident, such as Monday's loss in Chicago.

Asked about that Wednesday, D'Antoni said: "I'm sulking over on the bench, too. So I can understand the frustration. We've just got to a better job of blending things that we want to do and we haven't done that." Now someone else will.

Path vows contact data 'hashing' in next update, chases privacy certification

Path is still trying to pave over those privacy cracks, promising that its next update will "hash" the contact data it previously used to suck up without prior warning. Last month, the app was caught with its digital fingers inside users' address books and while the subsequent (and understandably swift) update allowed users to opt out, the Path devs are still looking to gain privacy certification with TRUSTe. They told The Verge that the next version will still allow contact matching without plucking the precise details at the same time, using a hashing technique that won't identify the data delivered to the social network app. The latest update adds compatibility with Nike+ GPS, plus improvements to the embedded camera and a new music recognition function. It's available now for the mobile OS of your choice at the sources below.
