Christians in India call for a respectful approach to mission

Posted On : March 21, 2012 10:34 AM | Posted By : Webmaster

?Christians are to acknowledge that changing one?s religion is a decisive step that must be accompanied by sufficient time for reflection and preparation, through a process ensuring full personal freedom.? This assertion is one of the guiding principles for Christian mission in India suggested in early March by a consultation convened under the leadership of the Board of Theological Education of the Senate of Serampore University (BTESSC).

The purpose of the meeting was to study and review the 2011 document ?Christian Witness in a Multi-religious World: Recommendations for Conduct?. These guidelines were jointly approved and published by the World Council of Churches, the World Evangelical Alliance and the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue of the Roman Catholic Church.

BTESSC collaborated in organizing a National Level Christian Leaders Consultation with the Evangelical Fellowship of India, the National Council of Churches in India and the Interfaith Coalition for Peace. The keynote speaker at the 29 February?2 March event was the Rev. G. Devakadasham, moderator of the Church of South India.

The group?s aim was to develop a code of conduct for the Indian context based on the earlier, international document. The result is ?Christian Witness in the Pluralistic Context of India: Recommendations for Conduct.?

Among the principles proposed: ?Christian witness must reflect the fullness of life that Jesus came to offer. We oppose any inappropriate methods of exercising mission, such as resorting to deception and coercive means, which betray the gospel and may cause suffering to others. Such departures call for repentance and remind us of our need for God?s continuing grace (cf. Romans 3:23).?

The document continues: ?We affirm that while it is our responsibility to witness to Christ, conversion is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit (cf. John 16:7-9; Acts 10:44-47). We recognize that the Spirit blows where the Spirit wills in ways over which no human being has control (cf. John 3:8).?

PFT: Tebow version of trade 'not accurate,' Elway says

96484369_crop_650x440Getty Images

As potential whistleblowers go, they don?t get much less sympathetic than tight end Jeremy Shockey.? But the man former Giants receiver Amani Toomer described last week as a ?bad teammate? and ?worse person? nevertheless has rights.

Specifically, Shockey has the right to not be outed as the person who cracked the case of the Saints? bounty program in 2011.? Especially if Shockey wasn?t the person who blew the whistle.

But that?s what happened on Wednesday.? Former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp identified Shockey as the whistleblower on Twitter.? Amazingly, NFL Network thereafter decided (apparently without consulting legal counsel, or perhaps relying on the advice of Lionel Hutz) to put Sapp on the league-owned air and repeat his contention.

Shockey has vehemently denied being the whistleblower.? And now he wants something to be done about the potential damage to his prospects for getting another job.

?Is the league going to come down on their own people when someone does something so wrong and outrageous?? Shockey told Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.? ?There should be a standard for punishment, like getting suspended or fined or losing your job.? If I say something about officials, the league fines me.?

Shockey said he has been contacted by multiple lawyers about possibly filing suit, and that he has heard nothing from the league.

?I?m 31 years old and this is not good,? Shockey said.? ?People have asked if this is going to hurt me in finding another team.? I don?t know, but it?s not helping me.?

Unfortunately for Shockey, there could be plenty of other factors keeping a team from signing him.? Still, being flagged as a potential whistleblower doesn?t help.? Even if no other NFL team will ever again use a bounty system, the outdated mentality of the football locker room shuns those who would break the code of silence in any way.

In Shockey?s case, the problem is that few would regard him as someone who succumbed to a crisis of conscience.? Instead, many would assume he was simply trying to get back at the Saints for cutting him.

That said, a league source has told us that Shockey wasn?t the whistleblower, and that he wasn?t involved in any way in the investigation.? If that?s true, why doesn?t the league simply say so?

Apparently, the NFL is so sensitive about potentially disclosing the name of the whistleblower that it doesn?t want to comment on the matter at all, even by expressly ruling someone out.? If that?s the reason for the silence, the league needs to accept the reality that the ship has sailed, via the disclosure of Shockey?s name on the league-owned network by an employee of the league-owned network, which necessarily makes him an employee of the league.

The problem isn?t Sapp.? That?s his style and his shtick, and it?s what makes him good on TV.? The problem is that the NFL failed to convene a meeting of its NFL Network and NFL.com staff in early March and explain that any reporting or speculation or discussion of the identity of the person who provided information that helped the NFL discover the existence of the bounty program was prohibited, whether because outing a whistleblower violates the law or because it potentially puts him at risk of retaliation by an unstable fan or because it will cause future whistleblowers to not cooperate or, perhaps the best reason of all, because it?s the right thing to do.

That didn?t happen, which means that in the heat of the process of determining the on-air content on one of the craziest offseason days in NFL history, a bad decision was made.? Before the NFL punishes any of them, the NFL needs to realize that the failure to issue what should have been an obvious directive directly caused the current problem.

(AP) ? Drunk soldiers looted Mali's presidential palace hours after they declared a coup on Thursday, suspending the constitution and dissolving the institutions of one of the few established democracies in this troubled corner of Africa.

The whereabouts of the country's 63-year-old president Amadou Toumani Toure, who was just one month away from stepping down after a decade in office, could not be confirmed. The United States Embassy issued a statement dispelling rumors that he had sought refuge in their compound.

The scene in this normally serene capital was unsettling to those proud of Mali's history as one of the mature democracies in the region. Soldiers smelling of alcohol ripped flat-screen TVs, computer monitors, printers and photocopiers out of the presidential palace, carting them off in plain sight. Others in pickup trucks zoomed across the broad avenues, holding beer bottles in one hand and firing automatic weapons with the other.

The mutineers said they were overthrowing the government because of its mishandling of an ethnic Tuareg insurgency in the country's north that began in January. Tens of thousands of Malian civilians have been forced to flee. The soldiers sent to fight the separatists have been killed in large numbers, often after being sent to the battlefield with inadequate arms and food supplies, prompting fierce criticism of the government.

The coup began Wednesday, after young troops mutinied at a military camp near the capital. The rioting spread to a garrison thousands of kilometers (miles) away in the strategic northern town of Gao.

By evening, soldiers had surrounded the state television station in Bamako. At dawn on Thursday, some 20 soldiers huddled behind a table, facing the camera. They introduced themselves as the National Committee for the Reestablishment of Democracy and the Restoration of the State, known by its French acronym, CNRDR.

"The CNRDR representing all the elements of the armed forces, defensive forces and security forces has decided to assume its responsibilities and end the incompetent and disavowed regime of Amadou Toumani Toure," they said, reading from a statement. "The objective of the CNRDR does not in any way aim to confiscate power, and we solemnly swear to return power to a democratically elected president as soon as national unity and territorial integrity are established."

The soldiers said they intended to hand over power to an elected government, though they made no mention of the fact that elections were supposed to be held on April 29. More than a dozen candidates were expected to run. Toure was not going to run in the election, as he had already served the maximum two terms.

Criticism of the coup was swift. France said would suspend all government cooperation with Mali, except for aid. In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said: "The United States condemns the military seizure of power in Mali" and said the U.S. stands by Toure's legitimately elected government.

And the regional body representing countries in the region, the Economic Community of West African States, called the coup "reprehensible."

The coup is a major setback for Mali, a landlocked nation of 15.4 million which is dirt-poor but fiercely proud of its democratic credentials. The current president came to power himself in a 1991 coup, but was hailed for handing power to civilians. A decade later, he won the 2002 election and was re-elected in 2007. There was never any question that Toure ? known by his initials ATT ? would step down at the end of his term next month.

"The situation is grave for our democracy and our republican institutions," said Ali Nouhoum Diallo, the former president of Mali's National Assembly. "We cannot approve the seizing of power through force."

The last statement from the presidency came via Twitter from the government's official account. Late Wednesday, they said: "This is not a coup. It's just a mutiny."

But as the sound of heavy weapons rang out, the emboldened soldiers encircled the palace. Contacted by telephone, an officer at the palace who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press said that the president's bodyguards had failed to fight the renegade soldiers when they burst in. They searched the grounds but could not find Toure, and there were conflicting reports Thursday about where he might be hiding.

The mutinous soldiers imposed a nationwide curfew, warning people to stay off the streets until further notice. A flight headed to Bamako was forced to U-turn in the air after the borders were closed. At noon, soldiers were still riding on scooters and in pickup trucks shooting in the air, and local media was reporting casualties from stray bullets.

The CNRDR again addressed Malians at midday Thursday, and coup spokesman Lt. Amadou Konare ordered soldiers to stop randomly shooting. He also asked that public employees to return to work on Tuesday morning. He said any unjustified absences would be considered an abandonment of service.

"We ask our civilian compatriots to stay calm at home and we ask our comrades in uniform who have not yet joined the CNRDR to do so without delay," said Konare, reading a communique on state television.

In recent years, the U.S. military has been helping train Malian troops in counterterrorism tactics to fight al-Qaida-linked militants who have established bases in Mali's northern desert, the same area that is now beset by a Tuareg uprising.

The Tuaregs, a traditionally nomadic people spread across the Sahara Desert, have risen up against the central government in Mali several times since the country's independence from France in 1960.

The newest rebellion launched in mid-January broke years of relative peace, and has been fueled by the return of Tuaregs from Libya who had fought in Moammar Gadhafi's army. Tens of thousands of refugees have spilled over into four of the countries neighboring Mali due to the uprising.
