3 Common Holiday Allergy Triggers | Natural Holistic Health Blog

3 common holiday allergy triggersThe holiday season is the time to celebrate and bond with family/friends. It?s the time when you create the best of memories by carrying out fun and enjoyable activities, right from eating delicious foods to decorating the Christmas tree.

However, for some this holiday spirit can get dampened by allergies. These allergies could be triggered by different factors. Although their causes vary from person to person, and place to place, there are still 40 million Americans who have to deal with year-round allergies.

In the following article we will be discussing a few such factors so that you can be aware of them?

Trigger #1: Christmas Tree & Other Evergreens

Who would have guessed that the beautiful Christmas tree that you spent time readying could be the cause of your stuffy nose and watery eyes? The biggest problem with Christmas trees is mold, which happens to be one of the most common causes of triggering allergies.

It?s hard to track mold since it floats in the air and is invisible to the naked eye. The exposure to it increases during the Holiday season since mold spores can grow in evergreens that we bring inside the home, not just your Christmas tree. This mainly happens because evergreens are cut well advance and then are kept in a humid environment, which tends to promote spore growth.

Trigger #2: Holiday Decorations

You obviously don?t use your Christmas decorations all round the year. So for almost eleven months, all of those lights, ornaments, and other decorative items are stored away in a safe place.

But unfortunately, since they?re not given any attention to for a long, they collect dust and give rise to another common factor for allergies: dust mites. These allergens can get really irritating/aggravating during the holiday season as the air is also damp. However, the good thing is, allergies triggered by dust mites can be taken care of with the use of good allergy relief products.

Trigger #3: Homemade Food

Food allergies are common, especially during the holiday time. Why? Because you have all sorts of foods around you! And it is hard to resist these dishes. Some of the most common food allergens include eggs, fish, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, milk and wheat.

Out of all these food allergens, the most commonly used ones are tree nuts and peanuts as they go into almost all of the popular holiday dishes. And if people eating don?t know about the ingredients used, it could lead to severe allergic reactions.

Regardless of what kind of holiday plans you have or who you want to get along with, you have to make sure that the enjoyments don?t get spoiled by irritating allergic reactions. Do your homework and stay safe from common triggers!

Norway princess secretly travels to India to play nanny

OSLO (Reuters) - Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit secretly traveled to India in order to care for infant twins born to the surrogate mother of a gay palace employee unable to get a travel visa, the palace said on Monday.

Armed with a diplomatic passport that granted her immediate access, the future queen jumped on a plane in late October when the employee, who is also a friend, and his husband were unable to travel to care for their newborns.

"For me, this is about two babies lying alone in a New Delhi hospital," Mette-Marit said in a statement. "I was able to travel and wanted to do what I could."

She did not alert Indian authorities and spent several days with the babies at the Manav Medicare Centre, where staff assumed the wife of Norway's Crown Prince Haakon was a nanny.

While the princess was away, her name continued to appear in the official palace calendar and her absence from a parliamentary dinner was not explained.

A relative of the two fathers eventually took over from Mette-Marit and the fathers received a visa in November, when they brought the babies back to Norway, the palace added.

Surrogacy is a hotly debated issue in Norway and the government discourages Norwegians from paying surrogate parents for children.

Protestant Norway was the second country in the world in 1993 to register same sex partnerships while same sex marriage has been legal since 2009.

The Crown Princess acknowledged the debate and insisted she is not taking a side and only did what a friend had to do.

"Sometimes life presents you with situations with few good solutions. This was one of those," she said. "There is an important debate going on about surrogacy and this was not meant as taking a side."

Hamas complains to Egypt after Israeli army kills Gazan

GAZA (Reuters) - Hamas accused Israel on Saturday of violating the shaky, Egyptian-brokered Gaza truce of November 21 after Israeli troops killed a Palestinian taking part in a protest at the enclave's border fence.

Medical officials said the 21-year-old man had been among six Palestinians wounded by gunfire during Friday's demonstration near southern Rafah, and had later died in hospital.

The Israeli military said the Palestinians had tried to vandalise the fortified fence and that soldiers shot at their legs after first trying to warn them away.

The Gaza Strip's Hamas government described the incident, as well as the Israeli navy's seizure of nine Palestinian fisherman on Wednesday, as violations of a ceasefire mediated by Cairo to end a surge of cross-border fighting this month.

"We have discussed this with Egyptian officials, so they guarantee a cessation to those violations," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said.

Increased Palestinian access to the Gaza fence and to fishing waters heavily patrolled by Israel were among conditions lodged by Hamas and other armed factions in the Cairo talks.

Israel said it was willing to ease its military clampdown on the territory if the Palestinians did not pose a threat.

Since 2009, the Israelis had enforced a 300-metre-deep no-go zone on the Palestinian side of the border, saying this kept away gunmen and would-be infiltrators. It had also denied Palestinians the means of working swathes of farmland.

The army suspended zone enforcement after the November 21 truce, but killed another Palestinian in a similar fence protest two days later. Hamas, while condemning Israel, deployed police to evacuate other demonstrations.

Abu Zuhri's remarks did not indicate that the Islamist movement, which remains hostile to the Jewish state, wanted to abandon the ceasefire. The eight days of fighting this month killed 166 Palestinians, while Gazan rocket fire killed six Israelis.

A smaller Palestinian group, Islamic Jihad, was more threatening than Hamas, saying in a statement that "continued and so flagrant (Israeli) violations would put the calm at risk and push resistance factions to respond in a way they deem suitable".

98% Brooklyn Castle

All Critics (43) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (42) | Rotten (1)

"Brooklyn Castle" easily checkmates your inner cynic.

Katie Dellamaggiore's lively and affecting documentary introduces us to a cast of characters that's very winning (in both senses of the word).

It's not To Sir, With Love: It's fierce ambition, the channeling of emotion, and hours of drilling.

Enlightening, inspiring and expertly crafted.

An irresistibly uplifting doc.

Castle is suspenseful, funny and, particularly in its depiction of the challenging home lives of some of the kids, moving.

...provides a corrective to the popular image of American schools as obsessed with sports and popularity, and it makes the strongest possible case for funding after-school activities.

Chess, brilliant young students and great teachers potent mix.

The I.S. 318 team? A delightfully motley, vulnerable, multicultural bunch, whose addiction to chess has allowed them higher aspirations for top high schools and, eventually, college and careers. You will root for them like crazy.

We meet five of the team's members and several of their teachers; by its end, you'll be rooting for them all.

"BROOKLYN CASTLE is a compelling, engaging and inspiring Documentary, featuring Junior High kids that you can relate to. Even if you don't know the game of Chess all too well, it won't stop you from enjoying this pleasant film."

Brooklyn Castle provides a snapshot of indomitable American can-do attitude, and gives one hope.

The admirable Brooklyn Castle transcends its formula to become an optimistic look at extracurricular education and young people.

Great story, well-made, what's not to like?

It's clear that chess isn't just a game; for these students, it can also open doors.

The film's structure is routine, but the film doesn't sidestep its more serious issues, while its charming subjects make it a winner both on and off the chessboard.

People not hooked on fish could get their omega-3 through new dairy products, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Not everyone has a taste for fish, even though it is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

And while a growing number of omega-3 enriched foods may net health benefits for people who resist the lure of salmon or sashimi, milk remains the product that has gotten away in what has become a billion-dollar health industry.

But now, food science researchers at Virginia Tech may have reeled milk into the omega-3 delivery system, showing it is possible to incorporate fish oil into milk and dairy-based beverages in amounts sufficient to promote heart health, without destroying the product's taste or limiting its lifespan.

Even better, the milk passes the sniff test. Twenty-five volunteers evaluated one-ounce cups of standard 2 percent milk alongside samples of skim milk containing 78 parts butter oil to 22 parts fish oil in institutionally approved study conditions.

"We couldn't find any aroma differences," said Susan E. Duncan, a professor of food science and technology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We were concerned the fish oil would undergo a chemical process called oxidation, which would shorten the milk's shelf life, or the milk would acquire a cardboard or paint flavor by reacting with the fish oil. It appears we have a product that is stable, with no chemical taste or smell issues."

The study, featured in the November issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, tested four different ratios of butter oil to fish oil in the production of pasteurized, fatty acid-fortified beverages.

The aroma-free formulation delivered 432 milligrams of heart-healthy fatty acids per cup, close to the 500 milligram daily target for healthy people suggested by a broad range of health studies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests daily consumption of 250 milligrams per day in healthy adults.

Research has shown omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for preventing coronary disease, reducing inflammation, assisting infant brain development, and maintaining brain function.

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fatty fish per week, citing research that has shown omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure.

But fish hasn't caught on with everyone, making room for new foods and beverages fortified with omega-3s in an expanding marketplace. Sales are expected to reach more than $3 billion in 2016, according to marketing analysts.

"I think the dairy industry can look at our study and determine whether it is plausible to modify its products," Duncan said. "I would like to help people who love milk, yogurt, and dairy, which have intrinsic nutritional value, address an additional need in their diets, especially if they don't like to eat fish or can't afford it. One of these dairy servings a day apparently is enough to sustain enough continuous omega-3 to benefit heart health."

If such a product catches on with consumers, Duncan said the next step for researchers is to follow groups of volunteers in an epidemiological study of whether the food improves health outcomes.

"Milk was first fortified with Vitamin D as a way to fight rickets -- a disease that leads to soft or weak bones," said Kerry E. Kaylegian, a dairy foods research and extension associate with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, who was not involved in the research. "It was a good approach to address a dietary deficiency disease, because so many people drink milk, which is already loaded with nutrients. This study describes fortification of milk with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We can't say lack of those compounds definitively causes cardiac disease, but there is evidence that they protect us and contribute to heart and brain health. Milk would be a good delivery vehicle for those nutrients."

Celebrating National Home Care And Hospice Month by ...

National Home Care And Hospice Monthby: Ni?a Angeli Pilapil

Are you aware of that special event called, National Home Care And Hospice Month? During November of every year, the National Association For Home Care & Hospice encourages various health care providers or organizations in celebrating and honoring the many significant contributions of the health care system. It is during this month that we recognize the major roles that health care providers give to hospice patients. Some of the most recommendable celebratory or even marketing tools to give out are health and safety promotional materials which would benefit both health care providers and their respective patients.

In addition to different medical tools, it is also good to give out practical and useful items to our dedicated health care providers, so they will be motivated to continue doing their job well. There are so many ideal products to use! You just have to make sure that they are functional enough so your target audience will want to use them as often as they can. Below are some suggestions you may want to consider for when you hold a National Home Care And Hospice Month party or campaign:

1. Comfy And Stylish Apparel

It is advisable to give out products like custom sweatshirts or fleece with logo to our passionate and hard working health care personnel which can remind just how important their role is to hospice patients. They also deserve to feel warm and cozy so these items are recommendable to give to them as gifts.

2. Practical Food And Eating Products

Have you ever bought lunch bags for adults in bulk and used them as marketing freebies? If you haven?t, well it?s about time you did because these items also make for great National Home Care And Hospice Month gifts. You can also opt to give them to the actual hospice or home care patients if you want to.

3. Amusement Tools

Health care providers have very hectic and demanding work schedules so it is also good to give them items that can help ease or take of the daily stress they experience. Take a look at selections of promotional stuffed animals in bulk and then buy and give them as official event freebies or tokens of appreciation to these wonderful and patient workers. There are lots of different designs available nowadays which cater to various special events. Make sure to pick the most appropriate ones.

They may not show or ask for it, but our hospice and home care workers need as much attention and care they can get. They also get tired and stressed out so it?s time for them to be the ones who gets all the pampering and spoiling. Let?s do that for them. Let?s join the celebration of National Home Care And Hospice Month!
