Friends in Gulf fishing tragedy; only 1 survives

HOUSTON (AP) ? For hours after their boat sank, Ken Henderson and Ed Coen treaded water in the Gulf of Mexico, talking about life and death while struggling to survive. For more than 30 hours, it worked.

Then Henderson was forced to make a decision that would save his life, but not his best friend's.

"This is the last-ditch effort, but I'm going to go for help or you're not going to make it," Henderson told Coen, just before cutting the strap that connected them in the deep, cold waters off the Texas coast.

"I understand," Coen responded, giving Henderson a last set of instructions. "Kiss them babies for me."

It was Friday around 4 p.m. when they parted.

On Tuesday, days after the fishing trip ended in tragedy, Henderson recounted the harrowing tale for The Associated Press, alternating between sorrow, guilt and laughter as he recalled the last 30 hours of a man who had been his best friend for 25 years.

The saga began Thursday around noon. They had been fishing for a few hours when Coen noticed the 30-foot Scarab was filling with water. Henderson started four bilge pumps. Water sprayed everywhere.

Coen quickly unhooked the boat from one of the many oil and gas rigs in area where they had been fishing. Henderson revved an engine, but the saltwater that had leaked in kill them quickly.

"Mayday, mayday, mayday Marine 16," Henderson called over his Marine radio. He got no response.

He dialed 9-1-1 on his cellphone. There was no signal.

Suddenly, the bow went up. Henderson flew back. Coen jumped to the right, his sunglasses and cap flying off. Already wearing life jackets, the two ex-Marines grabbed extra life jackets and other floating items.

"The water was so cold it took your breath away," Henderson said.

Coen, a slim man, immediately began to shiver.

After failing to swim to a gas well nearby, the pair prepared for a long wait.

And they talked.

"We talked about stuff that I'll never talk about. We discussed things and discussed life. We discussed families. We just tried to keep ourselves occupied," Henderson said.

As night fell, they took turns laying on each other's chests, conserving body heat. They tied their life jackets together to ensure they wouldn't drift apart in the dark.

They dozed. Coen started hallucinating. Henderson tried to keep Coen's arms and legs moving. He called him a sissy to get him angry. But as morning came, Coen's situation worsened. It took time to wake up. He tried to light a cigarette that wasn't in his mouth.

"I came to the realization that one of us may not make it or that both of us may not make it," Henderson said. "I just felt helpless sitting there with him."

About 3 p.m., the pair drifted toward a manned rig. Henderson realized his friend wasn't keeping his head above water.

Henderson told Coen to kick to the rig. He pulled him as he swam, but Coen was sideways. Henderson told him to kick. Coen thought he was.

And so Henderson decided to cut the strap.

He swam for two hours, but lost his sense of direction. He was tired. Frustrated. Depressed. He rolled on his back and floated. It was after 7 p.m. when he woke up.

He saw another rig in the distance, and prayed for strength.

He swam, seeing ice and crystal trees in the water. He reminded himself constantly there were no trees. He made it past a blinking light, a milestone that pushed him on toward the rig.

It was 2 a.m.

On legs so weak he could barely lift them, Henderson slowly pulled himself up the rig's barnacle-covered ladder.

"I'm here. I'm on a derrick," Henderson said out loud.

He found a galley with food, water and a phone. He called his wife, and told her to call the Coast Guard. He said he was on rig 633A.

"It was over 50 miles from where we went in the water," Henderson said.

All he could think of, though, was Coen. Convinced his friend would survive, he told the Coast Guard where they had parted.

Two hours later, Henderson was ashore in the Coast Guard dispatch room when haunting words came across the radio. A fisherman had found a body in a life jacket.

Later, in the hospital, Henderson saw his friend. He apologized and asked for forgiveness. He promised to fulfill his wishes, make him proud and look after his girls.

"I felt like a part of me had died out there," Henderson said.

Reducing cash bite of wind power

Tax incentives are not the same when it comes to reducing cost to consumers and investors

The State of Illinois is facing an important renewable energy deadline in 2025, and Northwestern University's Harold H. Kung has a piece of advice for Springfield to consider now: Investment Tax Credit.

Illinois is obligated to begin increasing its production of electricity from renewable sources, and a significant chunk of that will be wind power. Wind farms are expensive to build, resulting in higher energy costs for consumers and some risk to investors (who are needed to stimulate wind farm development). Fortunately, a number of government tax incentives can help reduce that burden.

Kung, an energy and sustainability expert, analyzed the impact of two incentives -- Investment Tax Credit and Production Tax Credit -- in six new wind farm scenarios. He found Investment Tax Credit to be more attractive for consumers and investors alike. It provides a lower cost to consumers for electricity produced from wind and a faster return on investment for investors.

"Because of the high capital cost of wind power, electricity generated from wind is more costly than from existing conventional sources," Kung said. "Government incentives can help mitigate the additional costs. It is useful to have estimates of the potential financial effects of various policies, particularly from the consumer's point of view."

Kung is a professor of chemical and biological engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and a Dorothy Ann and Clarence L. Ver Steeg Distinguished Research Fellow.

His analysis, titled "Impact of Deployment of Renewable Portfolio Standard on the Electricity Price in the State of Illinois and Implications on Policies," is published in the journal Energy Policy.

Illinois has enacted Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) to reduce the carbon footprint of electricity consumption. By 2025, 25 percent of the electricity consumed in the state must be from renewable sources, such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power. Of the renewable energy portion to be phased in through that date, three-quarters is to come from wind power.

Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and Production Tax Credit (PTC) both have a direct monetary effect on the wind electricity price, Kung said. In the short term, ITC is more favorable to investors (it brings about a faster return on investment) and to consumers (due to lower electricity price). But, he added, the benefit of ITC disappears when the capital cost is fully depreciated whereas the PTC could continue for as long as the policy permits.

Other incentives that could lower the capital cost of installation of wind power include policies that encourage and result in technology improvement, land rezoning and installation and upgrade of transmission lines.

Kung's analysis focused on new wind power to be installed within the RPS period beginning in 2011 and ending in 2024 with energy production beginning in the following year (from 2012 to 2025). He used three sets of historic data -- retail electricity sale, electricity generation and capacity -- as bases to construct different electricity production growth and incentive scenarios up until 2025. Kung derived policy implications from his results.

In addition to Illinois, 23 other states and the District of Columbia have enacted Renewable Portfolio Standards. More information can be found at http://bit.ly/P6fQy.

EU leaders agree on need for more money - just not how much

Some European leaders want to give the permanent bailout fund as much money as possible, but others say that will do nothing to deter a repeat of the current debt crisis.?

Europe needs a strong financial firewall to withstand the current and any future debt crisis ? this much European leaders agreed on when they decided to launch the permanent rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), this summer, a year earlier than planned.

What they disagreed on was how high these walls should be.? A meeting of EU finance ministers and central bankers this Friday in Copenhagen is supposed to find consensus, but the language used in the run-up suggests the parties' positions are far apart.?

"The mother of all firewalls should be in place, strong enough, broad enough, deep enough, tall enough, just big,? Angel Gurria, Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), told reporters earlier this week in Brussels.

He called for a European bailout fund of ?1 trillion ($1.3 trillion), arguing that ?when dealing with markets, you must overshoot expectations.?

The permanent bailout fund is meant to replace the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF), formed as a temporary solution to the eurozone's sovereign debt crisis. The EFSF has so far provided financial aid to Portugal?and Ireland after those two countries were downgraded by rating agencies and found themselves unable to raise money at the financial markets.

But the goal of the ESM is to signal to investors that eurozone economies are a safe bet.

?It?s a bit like a nuclear weapon,? said French Finance Minister Francois Baroin in a televised interview today. ?It is meant to be a deterrent rather than to be used.? France too would like the firewall to be as high as possible, the minister said.

Germany, Europe?s biggest economy, will have to shoulder the largest part of the ESM. Right now the plan is to provide the fund with ?500 billion ($664 billion) in funding, ?210 billion ($279 billion)?of which Germany would contribute in cash and guarantees.

Naturally, resistance against a larger fund comes mainly from Berlin, and so far Chancellor Angela Merkel has officially rejected any calls for an increase.

Jens Weidmann, president of the Bundesbank, Germany?s central bank, and formerly economic adviser to Mrs. Merkel, was uncharacteristically frank when reacting to the OECD?s proposal. ?Ring-fencing is certainly a sensible approach, but just like the Tower of Babel, the Wall of Money will never reach heaven,? he said in a speech at the London think tank Chatham House yesterday. ?If we continue to make it higher and higher, we will, in fact, run into more worldly constraints, creating new financial and political problems.?

The danger is, according to Mr. Weidmann and other critics, that eurozone countries do not put enough emphasis on balancing their budgets and on implementing structural reforms, which make their economies more competitive. ?The whole idea of rescue funds made sense when the debt crisis affected the periphery of the eurozone only,? says Christian Dreger of the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin. ?You can bail out Greece or Portugal. You can?t bail out Italy, no rescue fund is big enough.?

The most likely outcome of the finance ministers? meeting, according to a draft resolution, will be a decision to run the temporary and the permanent bailout funds parallel for a certain time, thus creating a combined volume of ?700 billion ?($930 billion). It is a compromise the Germans could live with, Chancellor Merkel has indicated.

Video: Steven Seagal talks about his students, Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida

What would MMA do without Steven Seagal? Obviously, Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida would not be the fighters they are without the sensei/movie star/border patrol agent/shooting-glasses-wearer/writer/director. Seagal talked about how important he is to MMA on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Skip to a minute in to hear him talk about the skills he imparts to his students.

He will probably be an eighth-degree blackbelt one day, but come on. He can't teach Silva and Machida everything he knows.

Meet The Team Tuesday! Lara Nieberding from Encore OBM

From Valarie: Tuesdays are for sharing and I?m so happy to be sharing our team with you. Lately I?ve been receiving so many emails and comments on all of the blogs wondering how I get it all done. The answer to that question is that I have the most incredible people who make up the Audrey Press team. Without them nothing would get done. With them, every idea in my head is a possibility. All of us work virtually online and freelance. We live all over the world and every day is filled with fun creations. Without further ado, I present to you the doers, dreamers, and wizards of Audrey Press. This week we are ?meeting? social media guru Lara Niedberding from Encore On-Line Business Management. Welcome Lara!

Lara Nieberding loves metrics. She has a real passion for looking at data, watching numbers on-line, and anything to do with social media analytics. Her passion for these metrics is at the heart of her business and it is what is helping her clients reach new levels of success.

?I like to say I am the Business Muse that keeps your business?functioning!? Lara shares with a smile. ?I pride myself in offering the services for busy business professionals that help them keep their business running on-line.?

Roughly 7 years ago, Lara and family moved to the small town of Salisbury, Maryland. Being new to the community, she found herself turning to on-line and the Internet to look for work and connect with like-minded people. It was there she discovered endless virtual worlds filled with entrepreneurs who were creating businesses, and successful ones at that.

?I discovered a slew of business professionals who were working 40 hours a week at day jobs, then coming home and working another 40 hours on-line building and creating businesses.? Lara offers. ?I began to see tremendous opportunity in offering them my admin knowledge and assistance virtually.?

From there Encore On-Line Business Management was born. Lara?s services include everything from e-commerce help for business to social media implementation. Her certifications include Internet Marketing Support Specialist, Social Media Support Specialist, and Product Launch Support Specialist from VA Classroom.

Social media is one of Lara?s areas of expertise and when I asked what advice she would give to businesses about the subject, she was quick to respond. ??My advice would be to go where your customers are. Don?t just use any given social media platform because ?everyone else is.? Know where your prospective clients are, create a presence there, and have a strategy in place as well.?

Lara believes volunteering her time is important for building a strong community. She has been a member of the International Virtual Assistants?Association? and has served on multiple committees including the IVAA Board of Directors, 2009-2012. ?It was through IVAA I met Terry Green from BizEase Support Solutions.? Lara offers, ?She has been a huge inspiration and mentor with my VA business.? ?Lara went on to tell me it was Terry who got her involved with IVAA in 2007, a move she credits with her business success. ?She encouraged me during the times I wasn?t sure I could do this. She was, and still is, a role model for me.?

?At IVVA, we believe in helping others succeed and ?paying it forward.?? Lara adds. ?I think that?s a great philosophy to have in business, and in life.?
