Vivian Diller, Ph.D.: Bob Bergeron: What Role Did Aging Play In Therapist's Tragic Death?

The recent New York Times article about the life and death of psychotherapist Bob Bergeron understandably struck many people as tragic.

While any suicide is shocking, Bergeron's was particularly unsettling given the topic of his soon-to-be published book, "The Right Side of Forty: The Complete Guide to Happiness for Gay Men at Midlife and Beyond." Ironically, this popular therapist at the peak of his career, known for his thriving practice among the gay community, took his life seemingly unable to heed his own advice.

Without any obvious antecedent to his suicide -- no known history of depression, trauma, loss or drug abuse -- speculation as to what happened to Bergeron abounds: What was really going on underneath this outwardly upbeat and successful man? Why now, just when he seemed to have figured this aging thing out? And, to those of us in his profession, the news provoked other difficult issues: How did his suicide impact his patients? Will they ever trust another therapist to help them deal with this complicated loss -- or the losses they face as they too hit midlife?

In the end, in spite of the topic he wrote and lectured about -- aging gracefully --- was he another one of those people hitting 50, who, while proclaiming the glories of reinvention at midlife, truly felt an underlying dread of what comes next? Was he, as Susan Jacoby warned in "Never Say Die," lulled by the current myths about midlife metamorphosis, only to be disillusioned by the realities he faced? One clue that he was could be found in his suicide note, where he wrote that his own book was just "a lie based on bad information."

I found the story about Bergeron's suicide particularly disturbing, having just written a piece about the optimistic changes I noticed among our aging population. I described the cultural shift that was taking hold among people reaching their 50s, 60s and beyond -- a transition from hiding birthdays to celebrating them. I predicted a decreasing interest in the 'anti-aging' movement, and an increasing one toward acceptance of aging. I gave examples of the preference for 'real' over 'youthenized' role models -- e.g. Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres and George Clooney -- among the growing number taking center stage in the media. I wrote how these changes on and off screen were beginning to ease anxieties among aging Boomers, and more importantly, those who would follow.

Sadly, it appears the shift may have come a little too late for Bob Bergeron. From what we have learned, he was, at least in part, a victim of the dread of aging in a culture that values youth and beauty. His fixation on physical vitality -- and the potential loss of it -- clearly played a role in his emotional turmoil. Bergeron was quite open with his friends and patients about his struggle to move into a phase of life where his looks would -- and could -- not be a primary value. On his website, he wrote:

By my thirties, with close to a decade of experience as an openly gay man, I now had more confidence and comfort in navigating my gay world. Then I turned forty, and with getting older all the rules changed again. By cruel irony, I now again began feeling less secure around men -- younger gay men and even many gay men my age or older.

No matter how hard Bergeron worked to have a strong and fit body, or how focused he was to keep it that way, he -- like all of us -- faced the inevitable changes that come with age. One of his friends told The New York Times that Bergeron had said, "I peaked when I was 30 or 35. I was super-successful, everyone looked at me, and I felt extremely cool in my sexuality." A colleague told the Times that the book Bergeron wrote discussed challenges that he had experienced, including "...what to do when you're not attractive or you no longer have the appeal you once had." (The book's publication has been canceled.)

Did those challenges push Bergeron over the edge? Were his issues similar to those facing others who struggle as they head toward 50 -- remember Demi Moore's recent breakdown? And Heather Locklear's? We can only hope that the cultural shifts I wrote about are not too late for others who are trying to come to terms with aging in our youth-obsessed culture.

I recently wrote a post highlighting the difficulties that getting older brings to those whose identities are closely tied to their physical appearance -- actors, celebs, athletes and others -- who have more to lose as their looks change. As a former professional ballerina and fashion model, I understand this issue. But the struggle over an aging appearance is no longer only a women's issue in today's culture, and I wonder if it is more acute for gay men.

Suicide is a tragic act that is alarming and unsettling in many ways. Perhaps the loss of Bergeron is an opportunity to use one gay man's anguish as a warning to us all. Putting too much focus on our appearance and on youth -- whether we are straight or gay -- is a recipe for unhappiness. While we are finding better ways to deal with our aging process -- by neither holding on nor letting it all go -- we need to keep that movement growing.

As Bergeron noted in the last post on his website, "I've got a concise picture of what being over forty is about and it's a great perspective filled with happiness, feeling sexy ... and taking good care of ourselves. This picture will get you results that flourish long-term." Sadly, Bergeron couldn't find his way to that vision, but hopefully more of us will in time.

A skepticism however which may creep into the minds before pursuing such a pragmatic degree courses is that, can being online do complete justice to a practical course like engineering? Well the answer is both yes and no. It is because it completely depends on the curiosity of the students.

Some times instead of opening their own different outlets in a particular region, the owner of the courses hire best colleges in a region for the respective courses. When a student aspires to undergo a practical lesson, the working members of the website make the arrangements. They schedule the courses as per the convenience of both, the student as well as the faculty and the availability of laboratory if required. All the arrangements are done online, and according to facility of student. So in case of a working student, they can take up the courses on public holidays and weekends. This way not only a new candidate with better skills is developed, but also there are employment generated, as managing and running a site needs employees. The time of a student and faculty is utilized to their ultimate availability and therefore a better world creation so runs in progress.

Android 4.0 arriving for HTC Rezound today, Droid RAZR update delayed

Android 4.0 set to arrive for HTC Rezound today, Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx see delays
April 4th has come and gone, and sadly, both the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx remain without their promised bites of Ice Cream Sandwich. The latest communique from Best Buy confirms the delay, and similarly, a tweet from Motorola Mobility adds that a new release date has yet to be established. As a touch of silver lining to the otherwise gloomy news, the Best Buy crew reiterates that the HTC Rezound is set to receive Android 4.0 today -- in all its Sense 3.6 mediocrity. Cross your fingers, Rezound owners: this looks to be the big day.

 Business to Business Advertising Explained

B2B or Business to business advertising is the marketing of products and services exclusively to bulk consumers such as business establishments, hospitals and other institutions and even government bodies. Although business to business advertising does include advertising to dealers and stockiest, when we refer to Business to business advertising, we generally exclude this category because wholesale dealers and stockiest are not consumers. Business to business solutions to wholesale dealers and stockiest is purely on the basis of the popularity of the product or its potential and profit margins for the wholesale dealers and stockiest for pushing the product to the retailers. Business to business advertising to wholesale dealers and stockiest therefore requires a different approach altogether.

The basic fundamentals of business to business advertising are the same as those used when advertising to small consumers. The difference is in the way the product or service is presented. For example, all business establishments require filing cabinets. Typically, they buy two types of filing cabinets ? fire and burglar proof and ordinary cabinets that may simply have a lock. A business to business advertising for cabinets would not only need to be able to provide both types of cabinets but should be better priced than the nearest rival. Apart from that, the ability to provide the cabinets in custom sizes with the client?s business logo as well as the name of the department would be an additional incentive.

Business to business advertising therefore is advertisement that primarily
offers two incentives; a more competitive price and customization of the product ? the latter being offered without any additional costs to the client. You might wonder why the same is not offered to the small customers. The reason of course is the expected size of the order. While individual customers might buy one or two units, business establishments, hospitals and other institutions and government bodies would generally buy thousands of units. The profitability and size of order dictates the size and value of the offer.

Given the potential size of each business order, whenever you plan a Business to business advertising it obviously needs to be carefully put together. It needs to be racy, appealing and at the same time present a compelling reason for the business client to buy the product or service. When putting together Business to business advertising, you have to also remember that your business client will in all likelihood, be fully aware of your product or service as well as the competitors products and services. Business to business advertising can be carried out via newspapers, magazine, direct mail, catalogs, television adverts, F.M. radio marketing, special sales promotions, billboards and the internet. Business to business advertising is also often carried out at an individual level in social clubs. Indeed, it is often said that more sales is done through ?old boy network? than through high profile business to business advertising. ?Old boy network? refers to contacts and word of mouth references. Securing business orders oftentimes also involves paying commissions or giving gifts to the purchase managers.

Elder Care in River Oaks TX - At Your Side Home Care Houston Texas

Elder Care in River Oaks TX: Planning for Spring Allergies

(ARA) ? For many people, spring represents the budding of flowers and longer days filled with warm sunshine. But for 1 in 5 individuals, spring also means allergies are in full swing.

Seasonal allergies, also described as allergic rhinitis, cause cold-like signs such as ?itchy nose, roof of the mouth, throat, eyes and ears, along with watery eyes, runny nose, congestion and sneezing. But different from a cold, allergies are not caused by a virus; they are brought on by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as mold, trees, pollen and pet dander.

Elder Care River Oaks TXAllergies, which have an affect on an estimated 60 million people in the United States both young and old, can genuinely have its effects on your daily routine, and they are a problem both in daily life and professionally. Regardless if you?re bothered year-round or during a specific season, finding out how to cope with allergy symptoms can be very important to helping with your relaxation and quality of life.

This condition can also be expensive. From 2000 to 2005, the expense of treating allergic rhinitis nearly doubled from $6.1 billion to $11.2 billion, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. the majority of that was spent on prescription and over-the-counter medications. Many experts advise patients purchase store-brand, over-the-counter medicines as an effective means of dealing with both the allergy ailment and its linked fees.

?There are a number of effective over-the-counter treatments to address the symptoms of seasonal allergies,? says Dr. William Berger, professor of allergy and immunology at the University of California, Irvine. ?In fact, to help patients save money, I would recommend many of the store-brand, non-sedating antihistamines sold at leading retailers and pharmacies, such as Cetirizine or Loratadine. These products are approved by the FDA, but cost significantly less than the brand names.?

According to Berger, many allergy sufferers could find greater relief of their symptoms by taking one of these newer, more beneficial treatments now obtainable in the aisle, like Fexofenadine, which just switched from prescription to over-the-counter in 2011.

?Effective management with medicines, ideally before the allergy symptoms start, is key,? he says.

When an aging loved one must have?elder care, understanding of the interactions between over-the-counter medications and the elderly person?s prescription drugs is very important.

You may think that over-the-counter (OTC) medications are always harmless. But if you are elderly and prescription medications, this kind of thinking can get you into some distress.

?The average number of prescription medications taken by people over 65 is five or six,? says Michael H. Perskin, MD, an assistant professor of medicine and an internist at the New York University Langone Medical Center. ?As you get older, it increases and so does the potential for drug interactions.?

So how can you find effective comfort from arthritis and other pain, and cold or allergy symptoms? ?When in doubt, ask your pharmacist,? Perskin says. ?If you have taken the medication before, it?s probably OK. But if it?s new or your other medication regimen has changed, check it out.?

Elder care?caregivers can help find out about the drugs you are taking and help with contacting your pharmacist to make sure there are no interactions. You can find more info about the symptoms and treatments for allergic rhinitis at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (www.aaaai.org), or the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (www.acaai.org).

If you or your aging loved one would like information about how?elder care?at home can help your family, contact? At Your Side Home Care. We help many seniors, veterans and disabled in River Oaks and the surrounding communities by providing quality and affordable home care. Call 832-271-1600.

Property Tax Appeals Benefit Big Companies - West Chester Real ...

Such formal appeals are known as tax certiorari, or tax certs. Every year in New York, municipalities and school districts hand back hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars in property tax refunds.

Property owners say the refunds are a just reward for assessments that can be inaccurate ? years and sometimes decades out of date. But some agencies, already struggling with tight budgets, are taking on debt to make the payments.

Filing an annual tax cert appeal is routine for big companies, which typically own large and expensive parcels of land, experts say. Among the corporations that have filed for refunds in New York recently are I.B.M., Verizon and 7-Eleven.

Negotiated remedies can be a lump sum repayment, but companies also can agree to receive no repayment. In these cases, owners might simply agree to a new assessment they believe is fairer. Sometimes governments agree to spread the settlement amount over several years, in which case a business pays no property taxes until the repayment is complete.

In a case in Poughkeepsie, I.B.M. protested the 2008 and 2009 annual assessments of its 3.8 million-square-foot plant along South Road. The property had been valued at $160 million in those years, said David D. Hagstrom, who acted as special counsel for the Town of Poughkeepsie.

The resulting negotiated deal kept the $160 million assessments in 2008 and 2009, but the property?s value was reduced to $110 million and frozen there for 15 years. Local governments are satisfied because they did not have to hand back any money.

And not only does I.B.M. get a predictable and lower tax bill for many years, it is also immune from any tax increases approved by the town and schools over that period. There are exceptions for major development at the plant and another major downturn of local property values.

?Tax certs certainly have had more impact on local governments through the downturn, particularly commercial, industrial and retail? claims, said Karla M. Corpus, a real estate tax expert and a partner in the Syracuse office of the law firm Hiscock Barclay.

While towns and counties feel the pain of refunds, said Ralph Napolitano, the superintendent of Yorktown Central School District in Westchester County, schools are hardest hit because the largest share of most tax bills is earmarked to finance them. As a result, up to 60 percent of a refund can come from schools.

Mr. Napolitano said Yorktown schools refunded $45,000 in the 2008-9 school year, $52,000 in 2009-10 and $934,000 in 2010-11. Already this year, the district has committed to $877,000 in refunds, he said.

Daniel McCann, the superintendent of the nearby Hendrick Hudson School District, in Montrose, said: ?We had $300,000 in tax certs last year, and this year, we?ll have $400,000. We don?t have a reserve for it anymore. We have to borrow.?

Successful tax cert appeals often set a new valuation that stands until the parcel is reassessed. In other words, it is likely that the property owner today will pay the lower taxes well into the future, hobbling districts when the economy rebounds.

It is not uncommon to find properties around the state that have not been revalued since the 1950s or even earlier. Of the 983 taxing authorities in the state, only 468 hold periodic reassessments, according to the state?s taxation and finance department. That is in no small part because potential voters assume wrongly that revaluations always raise their tax bills, said Matthew P. Metz, a real estate lawyer and former member of the town board in Yorktown.

By comparison, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandates statewide reassessments every three years, and Connecticut requires them every five years. Calls for an assessment mandate are increasing in Pennsylvania, which, like New York, leaves the process to municipalities.

New York City is among those municipalities that perform regular revaluations, reassessing its one million parcels every year.

In the city, the major complaint among commercial property owners is not that assessments are necessarily outdated, said Peter E. Blond, a partner at the law firm Brandt, Steinberg Lewis, which has represented businesses in tax-appeal cases since 1932.

Instead, Mr. Blond said, city assessors are overstretched and lack critical industry tools for making accurate assessments.

In response, Glenn Newman, the president of the New York City Tax Commission, said suggestions of insufficient training were ?questionable.? Finance Department and Tax Commission assessors are required to obtain certification from the State Board of Real Property Tax Services, Mr. Newman said. And, beginning with the 2011-12 tax year, the commission is imposing a fee on higher-value property to restore some positions cut in previous years and to move some commission functions online for easier access.

The fee, $175, is applied to property with an actual assessed value of at least $2 million.

For the foreseeable future, however, few expect any changes in how properties in the state are assessed. A bill, A9038-2011, has been introduced by Sandy Galef, assemblywoman of District 90, that would require all taxing authorities to reassess all their properties every four years. The legislation has been sent to the ways and means committee, but Ms. Galef concedes it will be ?really tough? to get it passed.

In New Rochelle, the finance commissioner, Howard Rattner, said he recently presented the City Council with a plan for regular revaluations, the first since the 1950s.

?The council told me, ?Sit on that one for a while,??? he said. This despite the city having had to negotiate $33 million in refunds for itself, local schools and Westchester County from 2002 to 2010. He expects to have processed an additional $8.5 million in 2011.

The combination of political unpopularity and cost might doom any effort to revamp the system. Several officials around the state say it is less expensive to pay tax cert refunds than to enact regular reassessments.

Ms. Corpus, of Hiscock Barclay, said ?a big chunk of the problem? with tax certs would be solved if Albany forced periodic reassessments. ?But the state would have to pay for it,? she said, ?and local governments would need to control the process, or it wouldn?t stand a chance.?
