ABC's Roberts has blood, bone marrow disorder

NEW YORK (AP) ? Five years after being treated for breast cancer, "Good Morning America" co-host Robin Roberts has a new health fight on her hands.

Roberts said Monday she was beginning chemotherapy treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia. She is expected to get a bone marrow transplant sometime this fall.

Her older sister, Sally Ann Roberts, an anchor for WWL-TV in New Orleans, is regarded as a perfect match to donate marrow and will be doing so.

"My doctors tell me I'm going to beat this, and I know it's true," Roberts, 51, said on the show Monday.

Roberts developed MDS as a result of her breast cancer treatment ? a manner of transmission so unusual it affects only a few hundred people per year, said Dr. Richard Besser, ABC's medical correspondent.

The prognosis for many MDS patients is dire, but that's largely due to the disease primarily affecting people over age 60, Besser said. Between Roberts being young and healthy, and having already located a good donor in her sister, Besser said things look promising for her.

Roberts has contributed to "Good Morning America" since 1995, and was named co-anchor in 2005. The former Southeastern Louisiana basketball star worked at ESPN for 15 years.

She had blood tests that disclosed the MDS after feeling fatigued, or more fatigued than even someone who had to get up for a 7 a.m. show every weekday might expect, Besser said.

She learned of her diagnosis on the same day that "Good Morning America" beat "Today" for a week in the ratings for the first time in more than 16 years, Roberts said. On a day some of her bone marrow was extracted for testing, Roberts learned she had landed an interview with President Barack Obama where the president revealed his support for gay marriage.

"The combination of landing the biggest interview of my career and having a drill in my back reminds me that God only gives us what we can handle and that it helps to have a good sense of humor when we run smack into the adversity of life," she said.

First lady Michelle Obama, via Twitter, told Roberts that "Barack and I have you in our prayers. We believe in you and thank you for bringing awareness and hope to others."

Roberts hopes that attention paid to her diagnosis will encourage people to donate bone marrow that might help someone else with the disease. For donors, it has become a relatively simple procedure comparable to donating blood, Besser said.

Roberts will take some occasional days off from "Good Morning America" depending on her reaction to treatment. She will probably need to take a couple of months away from the show immediately after the bone marrow transplants. Her current team of colleagues George Stephanopoulos, Josh Elliott, Lara Spencer and Sam Champion will pick up the slack for her, with occasional co-hosts like Elizabeth Vargas joining.

"GMA" has been on a ratings surge in recent months, more competitive with the "Today" show than it has been in years.

Why Controlling Women Will Never Be Happy in Love | Learning to ...

I admit it. I used to be an extremely controlling woman in my relationships with men. Like many women raised in the 1970s, I?d been taught to feel safe like that, and thought that no one could ever take advantage of me as long as I let everyone know I was top dog. There are complicated reasons this came to be, and they really don?t matter. What matters is that I?m not controlling anymore, and I?m a heck of a lot happier than I ever was when I was a domineering jerk. Learning to embrace my womanhood, and learning the art of healthy submission to a good and trustworthy man were to the best things that I?ve ever done for myself.

So, are you a controlling woman? Here are four telltale signs that you are.

1. You always have to be right. Is winning everything to you? Do you get furious if your man doesn?t see things your way? Do you punish him by pouting or yelling or manipulating him in some way to get him to agree with you? If so, you are probably a controlling woman. Solution? Learn to say things like, ?I never thought about it that way,? or ?I can see your point,? or ?I appreciate you sharing your opinion with me, it?s really helpful to understand how you see this.? You don?t have to agree with your man, but you have to respect him. Insisting that he?s stupid for not agreeing with you is a mega #fail.

2. You spy on him. Do you check his cell phone records, or hack into his email? Do you follow him? Do you try to ?catch? him doing something wrong? If so, you are probably a controlling woman. Solution? Find ways to find your own life as fascinating as you find his. Get some friends, or hobbies. Be fulfilled. Stop worrying. Relax. Be nice.

3. Your man must seek your permission before he hangs out with his buddies or goes somewhere by himself. Do you have to know exactly where he is at all times? Do you keep tabs on his coming and going? Yeah? Well, you?re probably a controller. Solution? Trust him. And if you can?t, then let him go. No one wants to be policed.

4. You tell him how to spend his money, how to dress, how to eat, how to talk, who to be friends with or how to interact with his parents, etc. If so, you?re a control freak and you suck. Solution? Accept him the way he is, or move on and find someone you can accept. No one loves a dictator.

It all comes down to releasing anxiety, and learning to trust, or submit. Trust is the basis for all healthy relationships. I believe that is what the Bible means when it says a woman must submit to her man ? you have to trust him. If you can?t trust him, leave and work on developing a sense of self and emotional balance. Stop torturing yourself, and your man.

Stop controlling.

Phillips 66 to buy rail cars to transport shale oil

Phillips 66 plans to buy as many as 2,000 railroad tank cars to ship oil from shale fields to its refineries, another indication that the shale boom is shaking up the U.S. energy industry.

Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX) plans to buy as many as 2,000 railroad tank cars to ship oil from shale fields to its refineries, another indication that the shale boom is shaking up the U.S. energy industry, Reuters reports.

Oil companies in thriving shale fields such as South Texas' Eagle Ford and North Dakota's Bakken have turned to rail, trucks and barges to move crude because pipeline development has not kept up.

Greg Garland, chairman and CEO, said during a June 8 presentation at the Citi Global Energy Conference the plan is targeted for "the next year or two."

"That's a pipeline on wheels," Garland said. "So, that could go to the Bakken. It could go to the Niobrara. It can shift as the opportunity shifts around the country."

Houston-based Phillips 66, the newly spun-off downstream arm of ConocoPhillips?

The initial goal is to increase delivery of shale crudes to Phillips refineries by 100,000 to 150,000 bpd within two years using railroad unit trains, reports Reuters.

England v South Africa Rugby Betting Odds and Preview ? 09.06.12

England v South Africa Rugby betting, the first of England?s three test series has Stuart Lancaster?s men going as underdogs for the match at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday. This is the first big test for the new look England, after putting in much better performances at the Six nations earlier in the year, than fans have seen for a long time. There is a nice feel of a youth movement going on, and these will all be important steps towards the next World Cup, which is going to be held in the UK. So now England?s job is to progress even more, to take those steps forward and build upon what they achieved at the Six Nations, where their only defeat came against Wales. England are still working on that expansive game that everyone wants to see from then, but after being installed as permanent head coach, Stuart Lancaster has to find that balance between style and results of course, and getting a win out in South Africa is never going to be an easy task. This will be Lancaster?s first full test since being handed the role full time after dragging English rugby up by its heels so well for the Six Nations.

You have to go all the way back to 2000 to find the last win on South African soil for England, and stadiums in South Africa are always made intimidating by the home fans. England do have a couple of new caps to blood in the squad, namely Tom Johnson and Joe Marler, and they will be led again by Chris Robshaw. As for South Africa, this is the first time that they will have played together since their defeat in the quarter finals against Australia in the World Cup. The squad, now under the new guidance of Heyneke Meyer really haven?t had many days together training, so if England are going to cause an upset, then it will be by catching the Springboks cold in the first of the three tests. Like England, South Africa will have new caps on show, but there is still a vast amount of experience in the Springboks line-up, something that England can?t match at the moment. So it is a growing experience, a learning curve for Stuart Lancaster?s England, with three very tough tests to come. South Africa will be looking to dominate territory in the game and to crush England up front in the pack, whereas England may have better luck drawing the backs like Manu Tuilagi, Brad Barrit and Chris Ashton in the game more.

Frustrated liberals want more from Obama

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? They are trying to be hopeful, but the Democratic Party's most passionate voters are struggling to hide their frustration with President Barack Obama.

Republicans attack the president as a big-government liberal. Many liberals meeting Thursday at Netroots Nation ? it describes the annual convention as "a giant family reunion for the left" ? argue instead that Obama hasn't fought hard enough for progressive priorities on taxes, health care and the economy.

Even more problematic for the president: With the election just five months away, some are threatening not to donate money or time or even vote in November for the man who overwhelmingly ignited their passions and captured their imaginations four years ago.

"I want to be happy with him," said Democrat Kristine Vaughan, a 45-year-old school psychologist from Canton, Ohio. "But I am finding that he has succumbed to the corporate influence as much as everyone else. I think he has so much potential to break out of that, but overall he has been a disappointment."

Vaughan isn't sure whether she'll vote for Obama a second time and probably won't donate money as she did during his first campaign. She refuses to support Republican challenger Mitt Romney, but is considering writing in another candidate in protest.

The sentiment is not unique among the 2,700 people gathered on the first day of this three-day convention. More than a dozen liberals interviewed here indicated some level of frustration with the president, despite widespread praise for his recent decision to support gay marriage and ongoing push to scale back military action in the Middle East.

Most plan on voting for Obama and their gripes are not unlike what the White House has heard for much of the president's term. But these left-leaning backers' varying levels of enthusiasm could spell trouble for a president whose 2008 victory was fueled by a massive network of grass-roots volunteers and small-dollar donors. Polls show the president locked in a tight race that's likely to be decided in several swing states where he scored narrow victories four years ago. Places like Ohio, Florida and Virginia are expected to be especially competitive, and Obama will need liberal supporters to both work on his behalf and turn out in droves on Election Day.

"He's done a good job, but he could have done a lot better," said Ed Tracey, 55, of Lebanon, N.H., who heads his local chapter of the group, Drinking Liberally.

Tracey was one of Obama's many small-dollar donors four years ago, but his dissatisfaction has affected his generosity: "I decided that unless I thought he really needed it, I wouldn't contribute," he said.

Despite the criticism, polling suggests Republicans may face a larger enthusiasm gap than Democrats.

In late May, a Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 93 percent of Obama voters said they are enthusiastic about voting for him, including 51 percent who were very enthusiastic. For Romney supporters, 75 percent were enthusiastic, and just 26 percent were very enthusiastic.

Still, a closer look at the Democratic base shows an evolution of enthusiasm ? or lack thereof ? over the past four years.

The widespread belief in Obama's message of hope and change turned to frustration as the president yielded to Republican pressure by devoting a significant portion of the 2009 stimulus package to tax cuts. Liberals were further irked when he abandoned the so-called "public option" in his health care overhaul, didn't go after big banks more aggressively in his financial overhaul bill and supported the extension of Bush-era tax cuts.

Now, many say Obama is not fighting hard enough for tax increases on the wealthy to help close the federal deficit.

"I look forward to him fighting much harder," said Arshad Hasan, executive director of Democracy for America, a group founded by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.

But, like many liberals here, Hasan offered a mixed review of the president. He said Obama's decision to support gay marriage was "a huge accomplishment for progressives." He also was hopeful that Obama might shift further to the left should he win a second term.

"There's also a strain of thought among progressives that he's waiting until after the election to come out and be more boldly progressive," Hasan said. "I don't know which way that's going to go, but I know that either way, we get a much better deal than if Mitt Romney is elected."

Indeed, instead of hope and change, Democrats are trying to rally around their dislike for Romney, a man whom many are still getting to know.

Massachusetts-based liberal radio host Jeff Santos held the first stop of "the Real Romney tour" at the conference. The event was designed to highlight perceived weaknesses in the former Massachusetts governor's job-creation record and private-sector experience at Bain Capital, the Boston-based private equity firm he co-founded.

"He has no soul," Santos said of Romney.

Romney's association with reality television host Donald Trump drew some of the most heated criticism, especially given Romney's unwillingness to condemn Trump's repeated questioning of Obama's birthplace.

"If Mitt Romney can't stand up to a birther who's putting out racist conspiracy theories, how can he lead on other issues?" asked Rashad Robinson, executive director of Color of Change, a liberal group that promotes African-American political influence.

Robinson said some blacks now have less enthusiasm for Obama.

"President Obama hasn't done everything we wanted. But we know what Romney would do," he said. "Mitt Romney has said things like he doesn't really care about the very poor. And for a community that is facing unemployment levels the black community is facing, we may not be going to the polls with hope, but that doesn't mean we won't be turning out."
