Saving Lives In Africa With The Humble Sweet Potato

A regular old orange-colored sweet potato might not seem too exciting to many of us.

But in parts of Africa, that sweet potato is very exciting to public health experts who see it as a living vitamin A supplement. A campaign to promote orange varieties of sweet potatoes in Mozambique and Uganda (instead of the white or yellow ones that are more commonly grown there) now seems to be succeeding. (Check out this cool infographic on the campaign.) It's a sign that a new approach to improving nutrition among the world's poor might actually work.

That approach is called biofortification: adding crucial nutrients to food biologically, by breeding better varieties of crops that poor people already eat.

?

Howarth Bouis is one of the people who came up with this idea, and he's been promoting it for the past two decades. He's an economist at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, D.C., and director of an international effort called HarvestPlus that's creating more nutritious crops. But the idea of biofortification, he explains, grew out of earlier studies of vitamin supplements that nutritionists carried out in Asia and Africa.

In some cases, they found that just giving malnourished children a vitamin A capsule every six months cut the death rate among those children by about 25 percent. "This number really astounded the nutrition community," says Bouis. "Then they started looking at iron and zinc and iodine deficiencies." They discovered that these micronutrients make a huge difference in people's health.

Poor people often don't get enough of them because they spend their scarce money on cheap and basic foods like rice or corn. Those crops deliver calories, but not all the vitamins and minerals you need.

The problem is, getting those capsules to hundreds of millions of people, many of them in remote villages, gets very expensive.

At that point, Bouis had his eureka moment: Why can't we find a way for people to get those essential micronutrients from the staple foods that people are eating already? Why not try to breed varieties of corn or rice that are naturally higher in iron or vitamin A?

"Once that seed, that variety, is in the food system, it's available year after year after year," he says.

From Theory To Reality On The Ground

But the idea of biofortification didn't immediately catch on. Public health experts worried it would be a waste of money; crop breeders feared low yields and rejection by the population if the crops looked different.

Two decades later, the advocates have come up with varieties of some crops that have more micronutrients. The HarvestPlus effort is using traditional plant breeding. Others have created a genetically engineered "golden rice," which provides more vitamin A.

Their first real success in the field, though, is the orange sweet potato.

In several African countries, including Uganda and Mozambique, subsistence farmers grow a lot of sweet potatoes. They've been doing it for centuries, ever since the Portuguese brought the first sweet potatoes here from Latin America.

The sweet potatoes that arrived in Africa, however, were white or yellow. Unfortunately, those sweet potatoes don't contain any beta carotene, which the body uses to make vitamin A.

But the orange flesh of the North American sweet potato does.

So when Bouis and others started pushing the idea of biofortification, sweet potato breeders realized that they didn't have to start from scratch. "We realized that the orange-fleshed sweet potato that is eaten in the U.S. really could provide a lot of vitamin A for the people in Africa," says Maria Isabel Andrade, from the International Potato Center, who is based in Mozambique.

Selling A Population On A Better Potato

Andrade became an evangelist for the orange sweet potato. She helped find varieties that would grow well in Mozambique (the first of these varieties were distributed in 1997) and worked to get them widely distributed.

Arcanjo Alfabeto Cosim works on a farm that grows orange sweet potatoes and distributes vines to other farmers to plant. Dan Charles/NPR

Arcanjo Alfabeto Cosim works on a farm that grows orange sweet potatoes and distributes vines to other farmers to plant.

She drives a bright orange Toyota Land Cruiser with pictures of sweet potatoes painted on the side. She's working with the government on a big marketing campaign that includes radio spots and personal visits to countless villages. "We are still doing this: theater in villages, singing about orange flesh sweet potato, how good it is, how you feed it to your children, and showing recipes so that they get used to it," says Andrade.

I see evidence of her success at urban markets and rural roadside markets ? piles of sweet potatoes for sale. Many have one small end cut off, just to show that they're orange inside.

"This potato is healthier," one of the sellers, Jaume Otavio Martin, tells me. "It has more vitamins. These are the sweet potatoes that people want to eat, now. That's why I grow them. They're more profitable."

About a third of all the sweet potatoes in Mozambique, Andrade says, now are orange.

Recently, scientists gathered evidence from Mozambique and Uganda that these vegetables are, in fact, improving people's lives. Children who are eating them do have more vitamin A in their blood. Based on other studies of the effects of vitamin A, nutritionists are confident that the boost is big enough to improve the health of those children.

The researchers involved in the HarvestPlus effort are now trying to duplicate this success with other crops.

Just this year, they started distributing new varieties of beans to farmers in Rwanda and a new kind of pearl millet in India. Both are high in iron. In Zambia, they are starting to distribute a type of corn that has deep orange kernels, high in beta carotene.

Yet farming changes slowly in Africa, and it probably will take at least a decade before anyone knows whether these crops are doing as much good as the orange sweet potato.

Big retailers team up on mobile payments plan

(Reuters) - A group of big retailers that includes Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Target Corp and Japan's 7-Eleven is developing a mobile payment network, adding to the proliferation of options that let consumers pay with smartphones.

The system, known as Merchant Customer Exchange, is a retailer-led initiative that would match similar services from Google Inc, which began operating its own system last year on its Android devices.

The group of retailers, which account for about $1 trillion in annual sales, wants to make sure it has a say in the development of standards for mobile payments, Terry Scully, Target's president of financial and retail services, said on Wednesday.

"What we are looking for is a broad, seamless experience across all retail formats," Scully said.

Mobile payments are expected to rise nearly four-fold to more than $1.3 trillion annually by 2017, a report from Juniper Research said on Wednesday.

The group is in discussions with financial institutions, technology companies and telecommunications providers to set up a backbone for the payment system, Scully said, but he could not forecast when the system would be in stores.

"While speed to market is important, we really are focused on doing it right," Scully said.

The retailer group is joining a crowded field.

Earlier this month Starbucks Corp took on the mobile payments model, employing Square Inc to process payments at its U.S. coffee shops.

In May, eBay Inc's PayPal unit announced deals with 15 retailers to use its system for mobile payments.

"These big retailers are doing this because they are not happy with the solutions being pushed on them by the market," said Rick Oglesby, a payments expert at consulting firm Aite Group.

If these merchants can agree on a common standard for mobile payments, the venture could grow very quickly, he added.

"This creates a big opportunity," Oglesby said. "A system designed by merchants for merchants could have a big leg up over the competition."

The Merchant Customer Exchange is working on offering merchants such as retailers, gas stations and restaurants a way to integrate their promotions into the payment plan, which it said would be available through virtually any smartphone.

The swift rise of mobile payment processing tools in recent years has led some observers to forecast a future in which wallets are left at home. That could transform retailing, but also create security issues, particularly if mobile devices are lost or stolen.

About a decade after they were dreamed up by engineers and marketers, mobile wallets are still far from commonplace in the United States, stymied by industry infighting, consumer tastes and regulatory hurdles.

That has not stopped banks, phone makers and technology companies -- fearful of being left behind -- from trumpeting the concept and pushing the argument that any solution can succeed if it speeds up checkout times, is secure and easy to use.

Shoppers abroad, especially in Asia, can already wave cellphones at the check-out counter to pay for everything from groceries to gasoline.

Now, a growing number of mobile operators, banks, technology companies and card processing networks like Visa Inc, MasterCard and America Express are vying to gain a foothold in the still-small but high-potential U.S. mobile payments market.

Most mobile payments services, like those offered by Square and PayPal, sit on top of the payment networks run by Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

But these processing giants are working on their own mobile payment services because they do not want to lose contact with the consumer, Oglesby explained.

"Payments players use the term disintermediation - someone is stepping in between them and the customer and adding value," he said. "Visa, MasterCard and Amex are worried that they may become the raw materials that to go into the finished product - and right now the finished product is looking like PayPal and Square."

Three of the top U.S. mobile carriers - AT&T Inc, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA - are also looking for bank and network partners to make their Isis mobile payments venture grow.

Currently, credit card companies charge merchants transaction fees - and mobile payment players like Square and PayPal have to exact such fees too.

Other companies, such as AT&T and phone makers from Research In Motion to Apple Inc, are likely to demand a cut of sales. This puts U.S. retailers in the uncomfortable position of possibly surrendering more margin.

Companies involved in MCX along with Wal-Mart, Target and Seven & I Holdings Co Ltd's 7-Eleven include Alon Brands, Best Buy Co Inc, CVS Caremark Corp, Darden Restaurants Inc, HMSHost, Hy-Vee Inc, Lowe's Cos Inc, Publix Super Markets Inc, Sears Holdings Corp, Shell Oil Products US and Sunoco Inc.

The group said it planned to announce more members in the coming months.

The MCX system was reported late on Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal.

Domino's Pizza Strips Down for Logo Redesign - Food and Drink ...

Bigger isn?t always better ? sometimes it?s easier to remember things that are stripped down and bold in their simplicity. That?s what Domino?s Pizza is betting on, anyway. This week the brand continued its ongoing process of reinvention with the unveiling of a brand new logo.

The new Domino?s Pizza logo a wordless, streamlined design ? a simple domino in the brand?s signature colors ? that?s meant to be as evocative and iconic as other pictograph logos like the Nike swoosh. According to Nation?s Restaurant News, it?s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of new developments at Domino?s. The brand is reportedly also aiming to further revamp its image with a reimagining of its restaurant designs, a process to be implemented through new stores as well as remodeling at old locations. The new ?store of the future? design that focuses on pizzas custom-made to order:

?

The new store design aims to put pizza front and center with a ?Pizza Theater? format that will have ?pizza-making artists? hand tossing dough and creating custom-made pies in front of guests ? a move that may better position the brand to compete against a growing number of build-your-own fast-casual pizza concepts.

[?]

Depending on square footage, the Pizza Theater stores may have a ?comfortable lobby,? as well as an open view of the food preparation process, including a step platform for kids to watch their pizza being made. Guests may be able to order from a kiosk and track their orders electronically. Stores may also feature a chalkboard to allow guests to express creativity or give feedback.

?

Reinvention isn?t a new theme for Domino?s: last year found the brand revamping its recipes with its Pizza Turnaround campaign, thanks to the advent of social media interaction and customer feedback. More recently, the brand has focused on expanding its menu with Artisan Pizzas and toasted sandwiches. But with domestic sales growth slowing, it may take more than an expanded menu to jump start consumer interest. Maybe an image shake-up will do the trick.

Beating Cancer With Natural Food That Supports Life

Today food is big business, farmers and manufactures will add anything that is legally allowed to enhance their product to maximise profit. This is typical of the food we are now eating. Supermarkets have taken over the supply of our food and most of what we eat is no longer fresh and has often been in storage for many months. What we are eating today is so processed that our meals are nutritional deprived.

To maintain our health and keep us free of diseases we have to feed every cell in our body and we do that with natural food that?s been designed to support life. Food is our medicine we take daily to keep us healthy and disease free because it builds up our immune system and makes us resilient to all ailments from colds and the flu right through to heart disease and cancer.

Natural food is food in its natural state which has been grown in the ground and arrived in our shops directly from a farm and not via a factory. Natural food is full of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals which the human body needs to maintain health. There are some foods that are classed as super foods or healing food because of their ability to fight diseases to help us regain our health.

There are three vitamins that are essential for anyone to stay free of cancer and they are vitamin A, C and E. There are many foods with these vitamins but are easily gained by eating fresh oranges, avocados, kiwi fruit and berries. It is well known that when a certain food is processed it looses many of the compounds that are helpful.

Other beneficial foods are tomatoes which contain lycopene and are helpful for both prostate and breast cancer patients. Watermelons are full of antioxidants which are known to prevent the formation of free radicals that causes cancer. Lettuces are full of fibre which we need and one of the best foods for a cancer patient is those from the cruciferous family which are broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage and spinach.

Other important foods are members of the onion family which include leeks, chives, shallots and especially garlic. Onions are literally packed with valuable compounds and are also full of antioxidants. The more pungent an onion tastes and smells the higher the antioxidant value. Onions are also rich in sulphur compounds and it has been regarded as a cancer fighting nutrient. High onion consumption is thought to be the main reason why there is a lower risk of bowel cancer.

Dietary antioxidants which we obtain from these foods are the foundation of cancer prevention and must be consumed on regular bases from a variety of fresh produce. Our western health care system does not have the answers to cancer with their toxic treatments but nature does through the many foods it produces.

Remember if you can eat food in its natural state that nobody has interfered with then you have a much better chance of beating cancer.

Alan Wighton has researched all aspects of cancer for many years and is the author of the book ?Cancer, its Causes and its Cure.? It was written to help people who had been diagnosed with cancer with facts about cancer they are not being told. Please visit www.cancerhealed.com

Mis-Selling of Personal Loans by Banks, Personal Finance

Check out exciting Astro Services like Name Correction Analysis, Personality Analysis, Yearly Predictions, Kundali, Match Making and Much More.....CLICK HERE to know more.

Mis-selling is very common in Financial Sector. I was under impression that it?s is restricted only to Insurance but to my surprise its deep rooted. Before we proceed let me add that?Mis-selling?is the deliberate, reckless or negligent sale of products or services in circumstances where the contract is either misrepresented, or the product/service is unsuitable for the customer?s needs (Source: Wikipedia)

Last Saturday, i visited one of the well known bank to deposit a cheque. Since it was Saturday therefore there was a big queue and suddenly one well dressed executive of Bank approached me. She told me that Bank is offering Personal Loans at special rates under special scheme. I politely told her that currently i don?t have any requirement for Personal Loan. She was a true Salesperson and told me that Bank is offering Personal Loans @ 7.90% p.a. It immediately activated ?investor hormones? in my brain. I thought, if i take loan of 10 Lac @ 7.90% p.a. and use this amount to partially prepay my Home Loan (Currently i am paying interest rate of 11.5% p.a. on Home Loan). ?I can make cool savings of 3.6% p.a. (11.5% ? 7.90%) on 10 Lac i.e. 36k p.a. without?doing anything . I immediately left the queue and accompanied her to service desk. At the same time, i was confused that if credit is available at such a cheap rate then there should have been queue of 10 Km outside the bank & Why the banks are struggling?to sell Personal loan product?

'center', 'clear' => '', 'margin_top' => '', 'margin_bottom' => '', 'padding_top' => '', 'padding_bottom' => ''), array(), array()) -->

I told bank executive that i need 10 Lac loan for 5 years. She did some calculations on her calculator. She told me that i need to pay approx EMI of Rs 23300 per month and my total interest outflow will be Rs 395263 in 5 years i.e. 79052 p.a. which works out to be interest rate of 7.90% p.a on loan of 10 Lacs. I took all the documents from her including paper on which she wrote all the calculations. She told me that she will deposit my cheque and i need not to stand in queue again.

After reaching home, immediately i switched on my desktop as i was pretty sure that something is missing in this whole game. I opened my EMI calculator & entered the calculations shared by Bank executive. I was shocked to see that interest rate coming on my calculator was 14% p.a. then i understood the entire (mis)calculation to sell the Personal Loan.

I must admit that she has not shared any wrong calculations but she mis-represented the facts which means mis-selling only. She misrepresented or we can say misquoted the interest rate as Simple Interest Rate whereas Interest rate for any Loan instrument is calculated as Compounded Interest Rate.?In layman terms in Simple Interest, the principle remains the same for loan duration; whereas for Compound Interest calculation, the principal amount due at the end of the first month becomes the principal for the second month & so on (If loan is on Monthly Rest). As each EMI constitute of Principal and Interest Component therefore Principal component paid needs to be removed from the 2nd month calculation becoz customer has already cleared the portion of principal previous month whereas in Simple Interest it is assumed that Principal outstanding remains constant and customer is only paying Interest Component every month.

To make it more simpler, i will take e.g. of Person A and Person B. Both took loan of 1 Lac for 1 year. Person A took loan on 7.90% Simple Interest and person B took loan on 14% Compounded Interest. Now lets observe the payment pattern of Person A and Person B.

Person A will pay interest of Rs 658.33 every month i.e. Rs 7900 for 12 Months and after 12 months he will return or pay 1 Lac principal back to the lender. What it means, every month he is only paying interest and principal amount of 1 Lac Rs he will pay at the end of 12 months.

'center', 'clear' => '', 'margin_top' => '', 'margin_bottom' => '', 'padding_top' => '', 'padding_bottom' => ''), array(), array()) -->

Person B pay EMI of 9000 Rs per month and 1 portion of 9000 Rs every month goes towards Principal Payment. He paid approx 1.08 Lac Rs in 12 Months but at the end of 12 month he need not to pay any Principal amount becoz Portion of Principal amount was also getting cleared every month with EMI. Effectively he also paid interest of Rs 7900 only as the Person A only difference is the way Interest Rates are projected in 2 cases. Therefore we observed that Simple Interest of 7.90% p.a. equals to 14%?Compounded Interest Rate if Interest is calculated as Compounded Interest but being projected as Simple Interest & another difference is on how Principal is being repaid..

In the above calculation, Bank executive calculated Compounded Interest @ 14% for 5 years on loan of 10 Lacs and then re-calculated the same to project it as Simple Interest Rate of 7.9% p.a. Bank executive took advantage of Mathematical?jargon?s?to misrepresent the facts. The Poor Customers usually don?t understand the difference between Simple Interest and Compounded Interest but fact of the matter is that Customer is paying interest rate of 14% p.a. Which is the right & correct way to calculate interest rate. All interest rates quoted in financial sector are Compounded Interest Rate only

Above case is perfect e.g. of mis-selling by Banks and on Monday, i again visited the same branch and registered formal complaint with the Branch Manager. I got acknowledgement of complaint from Branch Manager and on Tuesday i couriered the same to RBI. This?menace?of ?Mis-Selling should be stopped and Facts should be represented in correct and rightful manner to the customers so that Customers should not feel cheated.

LG says the Optimus Vu will hit the US this quarter

Optimus Vu

While none of the carriers in the U.S. have stepped forward, LG has said that the Optimus Vu (check out our review) will be destined for the United States market this quarter. This aligns rather well with the reports of a Verizon branded version, sporting Big Red's LTE radio bands and it's unique 4:3 aspect ratio.

With the limited release (primarily confined to Asian markets) the Vu hasn't made a significant splash in the Android pool. Dropping the Ice Cream Sandwich running 5-incher with digitized pen input on the Verizon network could change all that. Of course just because it's been seen and mentioned doesn't make it so (hello there, Verizon Nexus One!) so until we see it on some store shelves we still have to call it a bit of a rumor.

Hopefully, LG can push the Vu into the U.S. market, as more choices is always better than not having them.

NJ Lt. Governor's Agri-Business Tour | New Jersey Department of ...

The Lt. Governor of NJ, Kim?Guadagno is currently touring Agri-businesses across the state of NJ. On Wednesday the Department of Agriculture along with the ?Lt. Governor?s office went on a tour of Comarco products in Camden, NJ. Comarco products specializes in food processing, and have been located in New Jersey since is founding in 1978. During our time there I was able to sit in on a meeting and hear about some challenges that are facing Comarco, and other businesses all around NJ.

What was especially cool was that one of the issues discussed in the meeting overlapped with a project I did for a course at Dickinson. It is always great to be able to apply something you learned in class to a real life experience. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything else due to privacy issues.

Following the meeting the took us on a tour of the premises. I was fascinated by how hard their workforce was working, and how efficiently the plant ran. What I found to be most interesting about the employees is that 86% of them reside in the Camden area. It was hard not to notice the cohesiveness around the plant. For me this is a result of a message resonated from the top down.

The highlight of the day was definitely being able to meet the Lt. Governor. She was so nice and well spoken, it was truly an honor. Below I have posted 2 pictures taken of me at the event. Also, I am providing a link to Comarco?s website.

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.?But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.?He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things?and the things that are not?to nullify the things that are,?so that no one may boast before him.?It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God?that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.?Therefore, as it is written: ?Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

Searching for Meaning in Death:

The Limits of Psychology to Fully Plumb the Depths

If man is the more normal, healthy and happy, the more he can . . . successfully . . . repress, displace, deny, rationalize, dramatize himself and deceive others, then it follows that the suffering of the neurotic comes . . . from painful truth . . . Spiritually the neurotic has been long since where psychoanalysis wants to bring him without being able to, namely at the point of seeing through the deception of the world of sense, the falsity of reality. He suffers, not from all the pathological mechanisms which are psychically necessary for living and wholesome but in the refusal of these mechanisms? is just what robs him of the illusions important for living . . . [He] is much nearer to the actual truth psychologically than the others and it is just that from which he suffers.?

~Otto Rank, as quoted from The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker

Becker continues:

At a point of departure let us first sum up everything that neurosis covers. . . . Neurosis has three interdependent aspects.

1. In the first place it refers to people who are having trouble living with the truth of existence; it is universal in this sense because everybody has some trouble living with the truth of life and pays some vital ransom to that truth.

2. In the second place, neurosis is private because each person fashions his own peculiar stylistic reaction to life.

3. Finally, beyond both of these is perhaps the unique gift of Rank's work: that neurosis is also historical to a large extent, because all the traditional ideologies that disguised and absorbed it have fallen away and modern ideologies are just too thin to contain it.

This is where I love theologian, Marva Dawn's mission, to restore the overall wise and well-educated ideology to the Christian faith that is the most accurate and comprehensive as possible to God's Word. She fears we have lost the discipline to study Scripture enough to have a better understanding of God's ways.?

Such ideology should be able to explain the seemingly incongruent features as, for instance, in my words not hers, God's allowing such a destructive force as death to continue to be wreaked upon His beloved children, especially what we are facing?having to watch, in our own lifetime, the destruction of our own beloved child, which seems one of the cruelest of the curses of our fallen world. We are all, to some degree or other, as child-loss-grievers, suffering the consequences of the "ear-tickling" messages preached from the pulpit which then get shattered upon the simple act of watching our own child's death.

Then ? Becker provides us with a brilliant conclusion for modern psychotherapeutic solutions,?when we are looking to psychology to do TOO much for our life's dilemma:

So we have modern man: increasingly slumping onto analysts' couches, making pilgrimages to psychological guru-centers and joining therapy groups, and filling larger and larger numbers of mental hospital beds.

(There is a place for psychotherapy. As a psychotherapist, I work diligently to help people overcome being "stuck" in their lives. Good psychotherapy can help us to understand our lives from a different vantage point, and then attain better coping strategies for our day-to-day living. But psychology alone, in and of itself, holds only a part of the greater reality with which we all must contend.?

Psychotherapeutic solutions fall short of dealing with a fallen world, cursed by the presence of sin and evil in our world. We need more than a coping strategy for daily dealing with the horrific reality that each of us, not excepting any one person from its clutches, that death is going to befall each one of us. And for parents, we have the enormous challenge of facing the reality that death?even?is going to overtake each of our beloved children at some time or other ~ we just hope it won't be while we are alive to see it!)

In my writing for grieving parents, I am ever aware that the "too-brilliant" readers may declare in their own heads that I grow "soft" in my "otherwise" logical thinking when I "wax spiritual" regarding my process of learning to "accept" my child's death by the comfort of recognizing she is now in Heaven with her (and my) loving God. This judgmental bias against the Christian is understandable on a simple level: who of us has not been disgusted with a cheap plot solution like the "deus ex machina" which my dictionary describes as "an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, esp. as a contrived plot device in a play or novel"? It goes on to explain that this phrase is the Latin translation of the Greek phrase, "theos ek m?khan?s," 'god from the machinery.' In Greek theater, actors representing gods were suspended above the stage, the denouement of the play being brought about by their intervention.) ?

This is where I think Scripture so wisely reminds us, God hides His incredible truths from the so-called "wise" and gives it, instead, to the humble, simple, trusting soul.

If we do not have an "educated" spiritual ideology that faces where death falls in the overall scheme of things based staunchly on GOD'S plan---not ours, then when we lose a beloved child to death within our own lifetime, we risk a decimation of all that we held sacred?a pillar of which included our holding dear the protection of our child's life from any harm, but especially from any irreparable harm (such as, God forbid, our child's death). ?

Douay-Rheims Bible
Carefully study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly handling the Word of truth.

~2 Timothy 2:15

You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,?persecutions, sufferings?what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.?In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,?while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,?and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.?All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,?so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

~Ernest Becker -?Winner of the Pulitzer prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work,?The Denial of Death?is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the "why" of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie -- man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality. In doing so, he sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates more than twenty years after its writing.

~Otto Rank, as quoted from? The Denial of Death?by Ernest Becker,?p. 176,?chapter 9: "The Present Outcome of Psychoananlysis"

~Otto Rank (April 22, 1884 ? October 31, 1939) was an Austrian psychoanalyst, writer, and teacher.
