PSA testing has just been given a fresh ?bill of health.?? According to a new study reported in the Journal of Urology? survival in what is termed this ?PSA era? has ?improved for patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer that has spread to the bones or other parts of the body.? In addition, the report says ?the disparity between African American and Caucasian men has been resolved.?
This news comes in stark contrast to the recommendations of the U.S. Services Preventive Task Force that has come down hard on screening men, suggesting that PSA testing has little or no effect on survival rates.
In this new study, conducted by The Southwest Oncology Group, a National Cancer Institute sponsored organization, results show:
Median survival of enrolled patients from 1985 to 1986 was 30 months
Median survival of enrolled patients from 1989 to 1994 was 33 months
Median survival of enrolled patients from 1995 to 2009 was 49 months
A 30% decreased risk of death was found in the group 1995 to 2009
The lead investigator, Dr. Ian M. Thompson, Jr. , Urology Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, says there has been a decided improvement in the median survival for African American men and that it is now very close to that of white men. Though the earlier results for African Americans was a median survival rate of 27 months the latest median is 48 months. He attributes the upswing to greater awareness of prostate cancer and improved health seeking behavior in African American men.? He says, however, African American men have a two to three-fold greater incidence of newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer compared to white men, which contributes to a similarly increased mortality rate. A greater effort, he adds, is needed to eliminate disparities? in prostate cancer.
Bottom line:? Dr. Thompson concludes?? While not all of these welcome improvements can be attributed strictly to PSA testing, without a doubt it has played a role in extending many lives.?

Recently it seems startups have been encountering problems securing funding. Today, we?re going to have a look at what companies actually end up spending their money on: their startup costs. Hopefully this will give any budding entrepreneurs an idea of what to expect and help startups identify wasted money.
When you have little cash you need to know where to put it to make sure you get bang for your buck. While startup costs can largely vary depending on what kind of business you are, we?ve done a little bit of snooping around and found out what generally makes startups reach into their back pocket.
While you can work from home when in the early stages, sooner or later growth and common sense will dictate you need an office for your business.
Doing It Right ? Look for the right office that suits you and your company?s needs. You?re going to want something that makes you feel comfortable working in and promotes innovation. There?s nothing wrong the bare minimum: desks, internet connection, small kitchen and bathrooms. The soft drinks and beers in the fridge sound great, wouldn?t it be awesome if you had a pool table right in the middle of the office, but realistically, when cash flow runs dry, try justifying the premium you were paying for that ?sweet? office space. Of course if you get this all free as part of an incubator or accelerator program, don?t turn it down!
Whilst you may live for your business you still need to live, you will need to pay yourself some sort of wage. The second part of this is the costs of a team of employees for your business. Then, again depending on your business, there will be associated costs to this i.e. desktop computers, some additional hardware. most of this tends to be a once-off payment though.
Doing It Right ? Keep in mind that after all, you are a startup, being broke is part of the gig; accept it and move on. Pay yourself what you need to get by weekly, no more. When hiring, consider interns. They?re eager, learn quickly, and cheap. Plus, they?re only going to become more valuable as they move through their degree. Lastly with some of the associated costs just make sure you need it and it?s worthwhile, e.g. are desktops needed? Interns can bring their own laptops to work, they?ll have had one from college.
Startups inevitably find themselves investing in staff out of the direct function of the company. Company growth may lead to a call for PR, Marketing, and possibly if you?re startup isn?t a ?tech? business, some IT staff too.
Doing It Right ? The simple question here is ?How on earth are you going to afford these employees on your budget?? The answer is even simpler: -on a project basis. Two options: hire the professional for the two weeks to run the PR campaign, or as we do, get an intern to research and build the campaign then hiring the professional to on the work and advice.
No matter where we looked this was an aspect of all startups. So you are going to have to occasionally hire a solicitor or, maybe a barrister (although you must have done something seriously wrong here). The trick is getting what you need.
Doing It Right ? Right now just question every part of your legal costs. A nice tip is have two solicitors, a cheap one for the regular stuff and an expensive one for the important things (we?re making the assumption that you?re getting value for money here, don?t actually just hire a solicitor because they?re more expensive than the last guy).
It?s another one you can?t avoid, unfortunately accounting costs will be a significantly large percentage of your overall budget. This is one of the main reasons Bullet was founded. We thought that this service should be much simpler and cost a lot less.
Doing It Right ? It?s the same case here as legal fees, why pay for more than you need? I?m not saying you don?t need accounts or tax returns done, but why pay so much? At Bullet we take out the hassle of doing your tax returns, payroll, etc. and still save you money. But by all means go out and pay for an accountant, do all the work yourself and drop another few thousand into the expenses, after all it is your money.
Sadly we can?t tell you all of your costs, partly because there will be variances depending on your size and industry. Tech and software companies, don?t worry about servers and hosting, it should be cheap and affordable. If it?s growing rapidly that?s in all likelihood, due to a growing consumer base and then chances are it?s paying for itself. You may have some unexpected expenses i.e. business cards or an occasional meeting but don?t sweat the small stuff!
Doing It Right ? One thing you don?t need is the ?swag?. Being honest I find it hard to understand how large corporate companies justify all these job perks, and there is the argument of being an attractive business to work for, but surely that should be based on what the business does? I may be wrong, but you definitely can?t afford/justify it. One or two posters and maybe some t-shirts for pitches or startup events are nice but realistically you don?t need anything else. We know you want it, but wait. Good things come to those who wait.

Mocana, a startup that is dedicated to securing the Internet of things has raised $25 million in a Series D round led by Trident Capital. While securing devices is Mocana?s biggest business, the fastest growing product is Mocana?s solution for protecting mobile applications.
Security in the age of bring-your-own-device and the Internet of things is making life more difficult for IT managers, who have to secure not just an exploding number of devices but also the applications and software that runs on them. But that, in turn, is opening up more opportunities for companies like Mocana, a security specialist that is announcing $25 million in new funding.
Mocana?s Series D round is being led by?Trident Capital with participation from current investors?Intel Capital, Shasta, Southern Cross and Symantec. The new money, which comes on top of $22 million previously raised, will be used to help Mocana further pursue its two main lines of business.
The company works with device makers to build security into a growing array of devices, not just PCs, tablets and smartphones but all kinds of connected machines. It has more than 200 customers across five major sectors: smart grid, mobile and consumer electronics, healthcare, datacom and federal.
But the faster growing business is Mocana?s mobile application protection (MAP) tool, which allows IT managers to secure apps and set different security settings for them without having to control the underlying mobile device. That?s an increasingly important business as more enterprises look to deploy apps on employee-controlled devices.
Adrian Turner, Mocana?s CEO, told me that the MAP business accounts for 20 percent of its revenues but will claim half of the company?s business in three years.?Mocana?s MAP competes against Good Technology?s Good Dynamics, which allows?independent software developers, corporate customers and systems integrators to build and secure apps using Good Technology?s SDK.
Mocana is backed by some big security players including Intel, which bought McAfee and Symantec. Turner said their continued investment reflects the progress Mocana has made in securing smart devices and applications. I?ll be interested to see if either of them looks at Mocana as a potential acquisition target down the road. With the growth of connected devices and more apps to secure on employee machines, Mocana is likely to have plenty of business in the years to come.

A high school in Prague, Oklahoma is refusing to handover a diploma to their valedictorian after she accidentally used the word ?hell? instead of ?heck? in her graduation speech. She submitted a copy for the school to take a look at before her speech, which included the word ?heck,? but the word ?hell? accidentally came out. So, is it legal?
Seth Berenzweig and Eric Schwartzreich weighed in on this issue today during Fox and Friends.

Eric Schwartzreich believes the school is doing the right thing by asking for an apology, saying, ?We?re dealing with First Amendment issues, the word ?hell,? I don?t know if that is the appropriate four-letter word that we are talking about or what the issue is ? this happened in Oklahoma. The issue is that the school has the right, a responsibility. The speech was submitted, she deviated from the speech and now the school is making the argument that ?We have a right to protect our students.??
Seth Berenzweig believes the ?School gets an ?F? for the handling of the situation,? and that it?s completely ridiculous and unreasonable that the school would force her to write an apology.

One of my more lively interviewees (and that?s a complete understatement!) Marsha Wright was born and raised in Harlesden, London, although she lives in Spain now. ?Marsha is an incredibly successful business person and property investor although her early beginnings were much more humble. ?
Although getting off ot a promising start by walking at 6 months, and even before turning 10, she had a number of part-time ?jobs? to support her desire to have more pocket money from washing cars to getting paid to do her elder sister?s chores at home.

Her first business sparked her creativity ? Marsha realised that if she could offer what people wanted, they?d give her money! ?So she kept finding more things people wanted including mixed tapes, and her own graphic design business at age 13 mixed with music production tapes which she sold to local businesses in Southall, West London.
Marsha?s love of music and singing led her to the brink of accepting a recording contract for a London record label in the early 90?s ? but she declined the offer from the London record label. ?Singing has remained one of Marsha?s loves till this date. ?
Marsha had endured numerous experiences of sexual abuse from a very tender age. As a result, and despite having the ability to pass here GSCE?s at 12, Marsha began to misbehave uncontrollably. ?This led to spending most of her early teens in and out of number of children?s homes in West London and Essex.
However, after meeting?one of her early mentors, Professor Stanley Lopes ? who inspired her to achieve and ?come up higher? Marsha?sparked a rapid change and she left school at 15 (a year early) to start college. Upon graduation she went on to study Management in Kent. ?At just 17, Marsha again advanced others at her age, when she started her first senior management role as a Commercial Manager in an ?Energy Brokerage? in Neasden.
In the 90?s, Marsha gained experience working and resigning from no less than fifteen different jobs from fast food to telemarketing ? jokingly she says she ?I could never keep a job?.
However ? this expereince was intergral to starting her first company aged just 18, in the publishing industry and incorporating a consultancy business at age 19.
By her early 20?s Marsha was strong in the property investment scene and in research following her studies in politics, sociology, business and investment strategies.
Now entering her thirties, Marsha is the CEO, VP and owner of?numerous ventures?internationally. She has grown to become seen as a business icon, a revolutionist in sales strategy and a mastermind in marketing tactics.

What can you do when you're disabled, and an agency tries to collect on an old mortgage debt by seizing your disability payments? A Credit.com reader wrote in with this question:
My husband had a VA loan foreclosure in 1994. He was not contacted in any way about it (the Veterans Administration said they had sent letters to the old address in another state) and now with interest owes over $30,000. They claim there is no statute of limitations for this. Now they want to take all of his disability payment toward the loan. We have sent the financial statement along with letters to ask for a waiver. Is there anything else we can do?
You raise several very interesting issues that could involve both federal and state law. Obviously the least expensive and least stressful course of action would be to convince the VA to issue a waiver and it appears that you have started the process.
I contacted a VA administrator in Atlanta who directed me to two VA staff attorneys. Neither of the staff attorneys returned my calls or email so I didn't get any guidance directly from the VA. (The VA does list its loan centers.) I also contacted attorney Douglas Radunz in Minnesota, who handles VA loan disputes, and he was kind enough to make several suggestions.
Doug thinks, and I agree, that your husband's status as a disabled person should weigh heavily towards a waiver approval by the VA. Presumably your waiver request noted that he is disabled and included copies of any Social Security favorable decision, VA disability decision and/or other documentation showing that he is disabled.
If the waiver request is denied, it might be worthwhile to contact an attorney like Doug for a follow-up waiver request. It appears from my review of the VA regulations in this area that you would have the right to an informal hearing in the form of a personal meeting with a VA loan supervisor in your area.
As far as some of the legal issues you raise, here are my thoughts:
1. Statute of Limitations
The VA apparently believes that because they are acting in an administrative capacity, no statute of limitations applies. This seems contrary to our system of laws, although I was not able to find in the VA home loan regulations any discussion of this.
Should you retain counsel to assist you, your attorney would want to review applicable VA regulations, administrative decisions and case law to determine if there is definitive law about this issue, or if a common law doctrine called laches applies. Laches refers to situations where a plaintiff sits on the rights for so long before taking legal action that a judge might find that the claim should be barred as a matter of fairness.
You might also be able to challenge the legality of the VA's deficiency judgment procedure in light of your state's rules regarding deficiency claims. Attorney Radunz directed me to a class action case he litigated in Minnesota called Vail vs. Derwinski that found in favor of the class of veterans who successfully argued that the VA could not pursue deficiency balances for a variety of reasons, some or none of which may apply in your case. The Vail vs. Derwinski case might, however, provide your lawyer with some direction.
If the VA attempts to exercise a right of setoff in order to seize your husband's disability payments, you would most likely need to file an action in federal court to stop the seizure and for a determination on the merits of the seizure. Given that federal court lawsuits are expensive, you might want to ask one or more veterans' advocacy groups for a referral to a low cost or free veterans rights lawyer.
2. Failure of the VA to Properly Notify Your Husband About Proposed Action
This issue raises questions of what is called "due process of law" and could involve both federal and state law. Due process claims can involve questions of constitutional rights and would require the services of lawyers who deal with this complex area of law. Due process litigation can be very expensive but sometimes you can find lawyers in some of the large "silk stocking" law firms to take on this type of constitutional challenge pro bono (i.e., at no cost) in order to gain an opportunity to argue in a circuit court of appeals or even the Supreme Court.
Another avenue you might want to consider relates to the ombudsman's office at the VA. An ombudsman is a VA employee whose job it is to cut through red tape and assist veterans with formal and informal dispute resolution. (Go to this VA information page to learn about the ombudsman's office.)
Finally, you should not hesitate to contact your United States Senator's office or the office of your federal representative. Members of Congress often employ staffers to assist veterans in disputes with federal agencies and you may be able to enlist the help of your elected representatives to take on the cause of a disabled veteran fighting the bureaucracy of the VA.
I would also note that in my dealings with the Social Security Administration and the Veteran's Administration, adverse decision are often not a function of malice or insensitivity. These agencies are subject to a mind-numbing roster of rules and regulations and employees, especially those at the customer service level, do not have the authority to deviate from the regulations. Should an employee try to make an independent decision, his opportunity for advancement could be impacted and he himself would likely end up fighting the bureaucratic beast.
So, at this point, you have done all you can do by requesting a waiver. While you wait for your response, I would suggest that you start looking for a pro bono veterans advocate who is looking for a unique constitutional challenge that could enhance his resume, and establish a relationship with a veteran's liaison at your elected representative's office.

H ome interior decor has attracted a lot of attention of late. This is because homes are no longer places that people return to spend the night and rising to go to work the following day. Homes have become places where people meet and relax, host guests and have family dinners. Some homes have even been turned into offices. Such is the dynamic nature of the modern home.
As a result homes have to be made to be places that suit human habitation and existence. Research has also shown that the interior home environment plays a very fundamental role in improving the quality of lives of residents; both regular residents and visitors.? Just by enhancing the interior decor that deals with space, color, lighting, furniture and other decorative accessories make homes places desirable to return to. Therefore, with this in mind, it is time you envisioned the modern ideas of home decor and Modern Home Decor so as to transform your house. Here is a list of ideas that can guide you with towards improving your home decor.
Harmony and contrast
Modern home decor ideas put a lot of focus on these elements. At the end of the day, your collection, that is furniture and accessories should all be harmonized. There should be unity of color, material, lighting as well as design. This may not be possible to achieve as you may have to incorporate both old and new elements.
One way of achieving contrast especially with modern furniture and in a very subtle way is by going for those pieces that have old designs yet have been modeled and finished with modern raw materials. In such instances you can go for Modern Furniture Online that is predominantly finished with materials and compounds such as vinyl as opposed to leather, acrylic and plywood as opposed to timber and tubular steel rather than wrought iron.
Furniture attributes
When choosing modern furniture online for your home decor, you should decide if you want to go with design that merely focuses on individual pieces or going for qualities such as color and texture. Such a situation will definitely necessitate research and items collection. For this reason, you need to shop widely and come up with a long list of items that you can place in your house.
Decide on purpose
Before you commence on your improvement ideas of modern home decor, you need to decide on the purpose that you want to achieve. You will realize that each of the rooms in the house has specific requirements when it comes to decoration. Ideas and materials for decorating for example a sitting room cannot be the same as those of a kitchen. Therefore, decide on what you what to achieve and then pursue it boldly. Above everything else, you should ensure there is style and comfort.
Consult widely
Design especially of home interior is an art that requires know how. There are lots of elements that need to be studied and finally be put together to create a lasting impression. Some of these elements for modern home decor include artworks, space, color schemes and eventually room arrangement. It would be a waste of time experimenting with ideas that can be deployed by an expert. So consult with a qualified interior decor specialist or research on the internet for quick ideas. When it comes to furniture items to use, you can go for modern furniture online that has great variety.

If you've been complaining about the thickness of your trackpad, Synaptics has something to show you. Their new Forcepad trackpad technology is wafer thin and use a capacitive force sensor to register clicks and taps. The new trackpad offers 64 levels of sensitivity and can sense five fingers at once. There is no physical switch inside the trackpad so you won't be able to "click" the pad anymore, but a sharp tap should get the job done. Because there is no switch the touchpad is far thinner than previous models and you can do a few clever tricks including controlling the scroll speed based on touchpad pressure. The technology should start making its way into hardware in 2013 so expect to see thinner, lighter laptop chassis in the next half year or so.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/tm1_-l39Fc4/
