Tauck Named World's Best River Cruise Line For Families by Travel

For the second consecutive year, Tauck has been named the ?World?s Best River Cruise Line for Families? by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

The recognition, announced in the magazine?s current issue, follows on the heels of Tauck being named to Travel + Leisure?s overall list of the ?World?s Best River Cruise Lines? in its August issue. Tauck has been included on the ?World?s Best River Cruise Lines? list for four years running, including taking the number-one spot in 2011.

This latest Travel + Leisure honor comes just as Tauck is announcing its 2013 portfolio of Tauck Bridges family itineraries. Launched in 2004, the Tauck Bridges collection is comprised entirely of land journeys and cruises designed specifically for families traveling with children. Rather than dividing families with age-specific activities or facilities, Tauck Bridges trips are crafted to deliver ?shared enrichment? through common experiences that allow family members to build strong, intergenerational bonds (or ?bridges?).

NEW TAUCK BRIDGES RIVER CRUISE

Featured prominently in Tauck?s 2013 Bridges collection is its new river cruise itinerary, ?Bon Voyage: France Family River Cruise.? The 10-day itinerary (from $4,690 per person, plus air) begins with an included two-night hotel stay with guided sightseeing in Paris that highlights the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and a special dinner at Fouquet?s. Guests then travel on the high-speed TGV train to Lyon, where they?ll board Tauck?s MS Swiss Emerald for a seven-night cruise on the Rhone.

Tauck is including a number of fun and engaging activities for families throughout the itinerary, including a scavenger hunt in Paris? Louvre, a lesson in ?petanque? (a ball game similar to bocce) in Viviers, a hayride in the Camargue, bicycling in Avignon, and a hands-on French culinary experience in Tournon. Three departures of ?Bon Voyage: France Family River Cruise,? will be offered in 2013, on July 11, July 25 and August 1.

In all, for 2013 Tauck will operate departures of 17 Bridges itineraries highlighting destinations in Europe, North America, Latin America and Africa. Each Bridges trip is fully inclusive, with all accommodations, ground transportation, entertainment, sightseeing, gratuities, most meals, airport transfers, luggage handling and much more built into the price.

COMPLIMENTARY HOTEL NIGHT FOR RETURNING TAUCK BRIDGES TRAVELERS

Returning Tauck Bridges travelers can also benefit from the company?s Gift of Time offer, which allows them to extend their 2013 journey with a complimentary hotel night. Guests can choose to redeem their free night at either the beginning or end of their Tauck journey, at the hotel normally featured on the first or last night of their itinerary. To qualify for the Gift of Time, returning guests must book their 2013 Tauck Bridges trip and secure it with a deposit no later than December 28, 2012. Other restrictions may apply.

Information on Tauck?s full 2013 family travel line-up is contained in the company?s new 76-page Tauck Bridges brochure, which is currently mailing to travel agents and consumers. Those interested in more information can visit their local travel professional, call Tauck at 1 800 468 2825, or visit Tauck online at www.tauck.com.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Neil Young, the Black Keys, Foo Fighters and others wowed thousands who turned out Saturday night for a free concert in Central Park to call attention to poverty worldwide.

Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, the concert also featured K'naan, John Legend and Band of Horses, with Young's performance capping off the evening. Video of the event was streamed worldwide as about 60,000 music fans crowded the park's Great Lawn, the midtown Manhattan skyline twinkling behind them.

Legend made a surprise appearance, playing one song "Imagine" at a piano on stage, a short walk from where the song's author, John Lennon, once lived. The five-hour show was a mix of tight sets from the bands, roughly an hour each, mixed with videos and information from guest speakers about global poverty-related problems like infant mortality and polio.

"Feels good to be here," Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl told the crowd during a break between hits like "Learn to Fly," ''Best of You" and "My Hero." Grohl, members of the Black Keys and others joined Young on stage for the finale, his anthem "Rockin' in the Free World."

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this month and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers were forced to learn about an array of global problems in order to get a ticket.

Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information by way of Twitter or Facebook.

"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that might be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.

Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.

Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.

Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.

So now what?

Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015, which is the key U.N. anti-poverty goal. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

Pumpkin Parade Lives On

Pumpkin Parade Lives OnImage via Jaaarel on Flickr

Halloween season began with a fright after it was announced Thursday that the annual?Pumpkin Parades were in danger of cancellation. Fortunately, the parade will live on after a meeting between City of Toronto bureaucrats resulted in a pumpkin removal plan.

The City of Toronto will place pumpkin pick-up bins around the permitted pumpkin parade parks. This way, during and after the parade, pumpkins can be neatly discarded.?

Concern has been raised about pumpkins coming and going instead of all being lined up simultaneously. However, this is the city's solution to an otherwise cancelled event. It is also an attempt, on the city's behalf, to encourage a permit system because parks who have not applied for permits will not receive bins.

Permits can be obtained by calling 311.?

10 Things My Sexual Orientation Is Not | Thought Catalog

1. A sport. No, O Metaphorical Gym Coaches of the World, I don?t have to pick some pre-existing Sexual Orientation Team. This is not intramural sports, and there are no team T-shirts. I scoff at this large-scale assumption that there are two or three Sexual Orientation Teams out there, or maybe like five if you went to a liberal-arts college. There are six billion people on this earth. C?mon.

2. A political party. Here?s the thing: relationships and sexuality don?t have an election day. With politics, if I don?t vote, my vote doesn?t count, right? So I might as well just pick the lesser of two (or seventeen) evils. If I?m not ?straight? or ??gay? or a ?lesbian,? then I should just be ?bi? right? But what if ?bi? seems limiting to me and ?pan? too all-encompassing and ?fluid? just makes me think of eyeball dissection in 7th grade science class? then what? OH WAIT IT DOESN?T MATTER BECAUSE THIS ISN?T AN ELECTION. I don?t have to sacrifice my combination Democrat/Independent/Green Party tendencies just so that Bush doesn?t win. If there isn?t a sexuality label I like, I can invent my own and the world will not be thrown into dystopia! I can vote for Nader!

3. A religion. Sexual orientation doesn?t have a set timeline of steps and rituals. There?s no required First Communion when you?re five, or Bat Mitzvah when you?re 13, or Confirmation when you?re 15. With sexuality, we make those rites up as we go along. We can take a little bit from one group and a little bit from another to create our own paths and identities. So what if I sometimes like guys and girls, and girls who look like guys, and guys who used to be girls, and people with freckles? Am I a StraighTransLesBiFrecklean? Probably. But guess what: sexuality isn?t religion, and I don?t have to subscribe to all the ideals of one sect. I don?t have to be a Lutheran or a Buddhist or a Jew for Jesus. I can be a Jewddhist. A MusBuddJewtheran for Jesus.

4. A math problem. I know, HOW tempting is it to like look through all my diaries from 1991-present and meticulously tally up all the men and women I?ve ever kissed, slept with, cuddled, fell in love with? And then, because you?re obviously some kind of math whiz, you could put all that information into this fancy equation, multiply by the number of text messages times orgasms times broken hearts, divide by the lowest common denominator or the square root of one or some shit, and then you?d have the solution? And it would be a number, and it would be even or odd, and so very tidy, and it would mean something to you about me. Guess what: this is never going to happen, because my sexuality is not a nifty quiz in Seventeen Magazine where ?mostly As? means I?m a Glam Gal and ?Mostly Cs? means I?m Boho Chic.

5. Your sexual orientation. Or your sister?s. Or your old roommate?s. Or, God forbid, some kid you knew in college who was a crazy slut or a Studio Art Major. Because I?m nothing like that kid, and the more you try to find common threads between our histories and habits and use those to make assumptions and create categories, the more you will fail. And nobody likes failure.

6. Cool. Nor is it uncool, or hilarious, or a really fun game.

7. An outcome of my geographical location. Despite popular belief, New Yorkers are not all born queer. There isn?t something hiding in the bagels and lox and the air on the F train that turns us all into label-stomping boundary-pushing feministas. I know plenty of New Yorkers, whether plaid-clad or collar-popped or what have you, who are completely straight or completely gay and guess what? They?re awesome. What can I say, not all of Bloomberg?s Kingdom eats labels for breakfast like I do.

8. A decision I made one day when I was bored. There wasn?t some Mrs. Dalloway moment where I said, ?I think I?ll buy the flowers myself!? aka ?I think I?ll eschew all sexuality categories and forge my own path ahead, thus infuriating my brethren of various sexual orientations for always and eternity!? This is not at all what happened. What happened was this: I fell in love with a person. Then I fell out of love with them. I hooked up with some people I didn?t love, and some I did. I fell in love again. I fell in love with two people at the same time. I dumped some people and some of them dumped me. In the end (not that there?s ever an end) I chose a person not because of their sex or their hairdo but because of their soul ? their bright, honest, totally transparent soul.

9. A citizenship. Go ahead, ask me. I know you want to see my membership card. You?re the bouncer at the Bar of Life who wants to make sure I have some sort of proof, some state-issued identification that assures you that I belong here, or if not here then back home in Georgia or Oregon or New Mexico from whence I came. If I don?t have unrefutable proof of my sexual orientation ? ANY sexual orientation ? then I must be some sort of a fraud, an illegal alien, and I should at least make the effort to go to the East Village and get a better fake ID. But hear this, O Bouncer: you do not get to question me. I will offer you zero proof. And I will give zero fucks about it.

10. A cute storage box you bought from the Container Store. Look at you, you?ve been paying SUCH good attention this whole time and you think you?ve finally got it figured out. ?Ta-da!? you exclaim, ?It?s totally you. It?s 100% unique. The shape is original, it has a million tiny pockets inside it where you can put all of your amazingly varied feelings and proclivities, and it?s big enough to hold all your emotional depths, and, it has these accordion folders that expand and contract, and?? Sorry buddy, nice try, but that box is not mine. My sexual orientation is here inside my coat pocket, as big as a chickpea but weighing 900 pounds, breathing fast like a butterfly, totally silent but crazy loud. It never stops moving, and it makes a whistle only animals can hear. It starts out as a solid but sublimates when you least expect it, turns into rainbow vapor just like that, no big deal, and then it rains down from the sky but the raindrops move so fast that ? wait, look there! Oh, sorry, too slow. You missed it. TC mark

Israelis are prepared ? and not ? for an Iran attack

Bernat Armangue / AP

An Israeli woman talks on the phone after collecting gas masks for her family in a shopping mall in Jerusalem in this Aug. 22 photo.

By Martin Fletcher, NBC News correspondent

TEL AVIV ? Did you know:

  • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
  • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
  • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,? the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Here are some more facts:

  • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
  • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
  • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.?

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next ?live hit? on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel?s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

Until then, live life.
