Auto repair-DIY Car Maintenance , What to Check and When

Everyone who owns a car should have a car maintenance routine. Keeping your car in good condition and doing a few regular routine tasks can help prolong the life of you car, reduce wear and tear and help you to avoid costly breakdowns. Many tasks like changing the oil are relativ
obesity problem ely simple, but do require some equipment and a little bit of time. If you arent technically minded or just hate doing these sort of things then once a year you should take your car in to a mechanic to get a yearly service , they can change the oil and oil filter and spark plugs and readjust the timing belt and a few
auto shops other bits and bobs. However, that isnt to say you can just ignore your car for the rest of the year.

I like to break down the tasks I do into weekly, quarterly, half yearly and yearly. I have a little schedule printed out and put up on my refrigerator and I just mark off as I go along. It helps because I dont have to think too much about when I last checked the spark plugs (for example) if I have it written down. Following a maintenance schedule neednt take a lot of time , I usually do it first thing on a Sunday morning and it takes no more than
diet and obesity about
collision repair 10 minutes.

repair collision
hepatitis blood test Weekly

My weekly car check up usually includes a quick visual inspection of the tires to make sure they all look ok , no bulges or sudden loss of air that could indicate a problem with tire inners. I also make sure none of the body work has come loose and there are no chips in the windscreen. Then Ill check the lights all work , front, rear, fog lights, indicators, break and reverse lights. Sometimes it helps to have someone run through the various
auto shop car lights switching them on and off for you so you can walk around the car and inspect them, but if you dont, parking your car close to a wall on another car can give you a handy reflective surface that you can use to check your lights.

Quarterly
I check and top up my oil and make sure that there is enough fluid in the radiator and enough battery acid in the battery. Also check the brake fluid level and power steering fluid. Remember to do these checks when the engine is cold so you dont burn yourself?and never open your radiator top up cap with a warm engine , there is a huge build up of pressure when the radiator fluid is running around the system and it can be fairly dangerous. Also check that the windscreen wiper fluid is topped up and that the wipers are well attached and the wiper fluid pumps are working. Then Ill check my tire pressure with a pressure guage , you dont need to go to a service station for this, just buy yourself a small tire pressure guage , they arent expensive , and keep it in the glove compartment.

Half Yearly
This is a good time to physically check the tire tread depth with a tread depth guage. Check your tread wear , if it is not even then you may have a wheel alignment problem. A quick look at the breaks to make sure there is enough on the break pads, and give your spark plugs a glance to make sure they are still in reasonable condition. Change your windscreen wiper blades. Push down on each corner of the car and check that it bounces up nicely again , this is a very basic check on the condition of your suspension.

Yearly
As above, but also check the timing belt and give the battery terminals a clean if they need it. Remember, if you disconnect your battery, you might have to re,enter your radio code to unlock it, so its a good idea to know it before hand. A yearly service at a local mechanic should do all of the above for you and should change your oil and oil filter and replace your spark plugs, top up your battery fluid and wiper fluid as well as check your handbrake and hanbrake cable. Check with them beforehand what is and isnt included and get a quote upfront.

If you find any problems, then you can correct them yourself if you feel competent enough , obviously topping up oil and fluid levels is fairly straight forward, but you could consider doing oil changes and replacing break pads yourself as long as you have right sort of tools , a good jack and some stilts to keep your car on while working on it are essential. Changing the spark plugs is also fairly straight forward with the correct spanner. a good tip is to put some bricks in front of and behind any wheels that remain on the ground to help stop the car rolling anywhere if all other safety devices fail.

Remember that oil changes should be done roughly every 5000 miles or six months.

If you find any problems in your regular car checks and you cant fix them yourself then take them to your mechanic and get them sorted out quickly before they become more serious. Sorting out the small problems that crop up can stop them becoming larger more expensive problems, saving lots of money. Also, keeping your car in tip top running order will increase your fuel efficiency, saving you even more. Keep your car in good condition and it will reward you with many years of trouble free driving!

Modders Make Android Work the Way You Want

In one of many tweaks to the Android interface, a customized boot screen features scrolling lines of code. Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com

CyanogenMod is one of the biggest hacks to ever hit the Android mobile platform.

It?s got an estimated 500,000 users. Many Android programmers use it as a starting point for their own coding projects. And according to the project?s founder, a number of Google employees have it installed on their Android devices.

Essentially, CyanogenMod is a tricked-out version of the software you?re already running on your Android phone.

Every Android-powered device comes running a version of the operating system, from 1.5 (Cupcake) all the way up to 3.1 (Honeycomb).

CyanogenMod replaces that stock OS with a custom build, letting you make adjustments to your phone that the official version prevents. It opens the door to more sophisticated custom wallpaper, changing the graphic that appears when the phone boots up, or more significantly, tethering your laptop to your phone?s data connection. With CyanogenMod installed, you can even overclock your phone?s CPU, so you can wring every last drop of processing power from it.

?You can customize the hell out of it,? says Steve Kondik, founder of the CyanogenMod project.

How a Hack Got its Start

Of course, it all began with a phone.

Debuting in 2007 as the flagship device for Google?s Android mobile platform, HTC?s G1 smartphone was the alternative to Apple?s immensely popular iPhone.

The G1 ? also known as the HTC Dream ? could be easily rooted, which meant giving you superuser access to the phone?s naughty bits. Essentially, it made customizing your G1 as easy as pie.

Steve Kondik had been waiting for a phone like the G1 for a long time.

?I had followed a few other Linux-based phones before,? says Kondik, citing offerings from Motorola and Nokia, ?but they never had the sort of momentum that a company like Google could bring.?

And Google?s philosophy fit with what Kondik, a software developer working for a mobile content delivery company in Pittsburgh, was looking for: a more ?open? platform for coders coming from a background in open source code, like Linux. Android, after all, is built on the Linux kernel.

?You can customize the hell out of it.?

After each version of Android was made available for download to the public, Google published all of the code to an online repository called Github, free for all to poke, prod and play around with. Developers could take any and all of that code and modify it to their heart?s desire.

Which is exactly what Kondik proceeded to do. ?I had been using desktop Linux for ages,? he says, ?and I just tried using some of those concepts to tweak the code. I had no idea what I actually wanted to do with the phone.?

After finishing his first version of CyanogenMod, Kondik posted the file to XDA forums, a popular message board in the Android modding community. ?All of a sudden, my single-page thread is one hundred pages long,? Kondik says.

Cyanogen Comes of Age

CyanogenMod was a hit. It racked up downloads from community members, each expressing how they liked the amount of control they finally had over their phones.

?As a mobile enthusiast, I like the ability to make changes to the way that my operating system runs,? says Chris Soyars, who works on CyanogenMod.

In essence, CyanogenMod?s popularity can be attributed to the very thing that draws so many to the Android platform: openness, flexibility, control. The Google-led Open Handset Alliance ? a coalition of 80 carriers, manufacturers and tech companies all backing the Android platform ? espouses these principles, as seen in the Open Source Project mission statement: ?We wanted to make sure that there would always be an open platform available for carriers, OEMs and developers to use to make their innovative ideas a reality.?

Apple, on the other hand, fought aggressively to outlaw the practice of jailbreaking its phones, which is akin to rooting an Android device. Apple ultimately lost the battle in federal court, so iPhone users are free to jailbreak their phones, though they don?t have access to the operating system?s underlying source code to the same extent Android users do.

While Apple?s controlling, ?walled garden? approach has obviously worked well for the company ? the company has sold 100 million iPhones as of March of this year ? Android has become the alternative solution for geeks and hackers who want more control over their devices.

For many, CyanogenMod is the key to unlocking that control.

What You Ought To Know About Outsourcing Your Online Business Tasks

In the past outsourcing the more ?trivial? tasks involved in business tasks skyrocketed within the IM universe. It?s popular mainly because it frees up the business person?s time for other things. You will discover differing approaches to precisely what is outsourced as this is often a matter of individualized preference. The main idea here is always to avoid the littler duties that you really don?t have time and energy to do. When you have someone else do those things, you are able to spend a lot more time on the more lucrative activities. There are a lot of things which you can do wrong when you choose to try outsourcing. We will help you out with a number of guidelines that can be used to make your overall experience much better.

You?ll see that there are many different expertise levels and personalities in people who accept outsourcing work. It is important to do as much screening as you?ll be able to for the people who can work well by themselves and don?t need to have their hands held every step of the way. Obviously, if you have to spend a lot of time helping or giving direction, you might as well be doing the project.

Whenever you find someone who is just so exceptional in every way, then be ready to go the extra mile to retain that person on your payroll. The opposite is valid when you are bogged down by individuals who slack off or lead to further problems. If it?s warranted, it is okay to fire a person when they don?t measure up. So it only makes very good business sense to even be willing to pay your best performers a little more than those who definitely are more average.

Plan very well before you implement an extensive or complex project. Jot down exactly what will benefit if it is written down. This will allow you to make everything simple to grasp. You want your plans (aka your roadmap) to be as distinct as possible. Keep the processes or tasks that need to be done as simple and clear as you possibly can. Document every little thing for your outsourcees so that they have as much guidance as they need. Before you employ, train and let your laborers begin, make sure everybody understands what is needed and required by them.

It is important to demand status updates when you have massive projects that have large work deadlines. Making certain that your expectations are clear is extremely important. You should actually set up reminders for yourself inside your calendar program or email program to help you remember important dates and deadlines from your employees. You probably want to avoid having your monitor coated with yellow stickies to function as reminders. Do everything you can to be professional for yourself and also your employees.

Believe it or not, sometimes you may talk about most things simply. In that case, then just make sure you know what you would like from those who are working hard for you. You need to ensure that they understand what you expect. You?ll probably find yourself feeling tested as you first start to communicate with your team but work tirelessly to pass these tests and establish your skills so ensure your crew?s success.

The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito): Cannes 2011 Review

The Bottom Line

Almod?var tries his hand at science fiction of a sort, but never abandons his favored themes of identity, anxiety and betrayal.

Venue:

Cannes Film Festival, Competition (Sony Pictures Classics)

Cast:

Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet

Director:

Pedro Almod?var

Screenwriters:

Agustin Almod?var, Pedro Almod?var

CANNES -- As implausible as it might seem, the cinema world of Pedro Almod?var just got stranger in The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito). Along with such usual Almod?var obsessions as betrayal, anxiety, loneliness, sexual identity and death, the Spanish director has added a science-fiction element that verges on horror. But like many lab experiments, this melodramatic hybrid makes for an unstable fusion. Only someone as talented as Almod?var could have mixed such elements without blowing up an entire movie.

With Antonio Banderas returning to the fold to play the mad-scientist protagonist, Sony Pictures Classics is assured that more than the Almod?var faithful will show up for its North American release. Reactions will vary, as it?s hard to tell just how much of this is being delivered with tongue-in-cheek panache or how emotionally invested the auteur is in his Dr. Frankenstein character.

That doctor would be Banderas? character, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon and university researcher. As befits his profession, Robert looks like he stepped out of the pages GQ. Yet his face conveys a sense of dark purpose. And he works out of a clinic in his own suburban, highly isolated and secure compound outside Toledo.

He presents colleagues with a paper indicating he has been researching the creation of a new and better, stronger skin that considerably bends the boundaries of bioethics. The audience by this point is well aware that confined within his mansion is a young woman, Vera (Elena Anaya), who is being molded ? there is no other word for it ? to the doctor?s specific requirements. And that would be to largely resemble his late wife, who was burned beyond recognition in a car crash and chose to die rather than to live in such ruined skin.

Vera wears a skin-colored body stocking like a second skin and spends much of the time in a series of yoga positions. These help her to reach an inner core of selfhood the doctor can never touch.

Then a man in a tiger costume (Roberto Alamo) breaks into the house. He?s in tiger skin because it?s Carnival time, but you suspect Almod?var would have found any excuse to put him into that costume to achieve the image of a tiger on the prowl for Vera.

There is first a sexual and then a violent encounter, which leads to revelations about the relationship between the doctor and the tiger-man, and between the men and Robert?s housekeeper (Marisa Paredes). Then the movie flashes back six years, which introduces two more characters, Robert?s daughter (Blanca Su?rez) and a local youth (Jan Cornet) who sets his sights on the young, emotionally fragile woman while he is high on pills at a party.

To describe any further the story, written by Agustin and Pedro Almod?var from a novel by Thierry Jonquet, would spoil several surprises. While Almod?var is clearly rummaging through old films and film genres that by his own admission include Bu?uel, Hitchcock, Lang and Franju as well as Hammer horror and Dario Argento kitsch, he mostly is going after the theme of identity. As the old saying goes, beauty is only skin deep, to which Almod?var adds that skin can only encase one?s identity or soul. For the skin can change, the soul cannot.

Throughout the movie there are references to the French-born American artist and sculpture Louise Bourgeois? ? Vera looks through a book of her art ? and the story picks up many of sculpture?s themes revolving around the human body and its need for nurturing in a hostile world and about the death or exorcism of the father figure.

For Robert is both a father figure and Frankenstein creator who seeks to dominate all women and eliminate male rivals. Yet Almod?var treats him as ?mad? and therefore not fully responsible for his villainy. He is the product of a twisted family and household. The women in his life ? his wife, daughter and the guinea pig? ? all suffer because he has suffered. So Almod?var?s embrace of his crazed characters is a tender one, full of passion and comic glee.

The film?s design, costumes and music, especially Alberto Iglesias? music, present a lushly beautiful setting, which is nonetheless a prison and house of horror. Almod?var pumps his movie full of deadly earnestness and heady emotions. There are well-timed laughs that lessen the melodrama and underscore that Almod?var remains ever a prankster. No one is better at tying imagery to emotions, yet even Almod?var realizes that, as Hitchcock would say, ?It?s only a movie, Ingrid.?

Intel's Sean Maloney Comes Back to Tackle Mobile

Sean Maloney will return to the spotlight as one of Intel's most important executives on May 31 after several months of medical leave and a gradual return to work at the processor giant.

Maloney, who shares the title of executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group with David "Dadi" Perlmutter, will give the keynote address that day at Computex in Taipei, the event of the year for Taiwan's electronics industry. It will mark his most prominent public appearance since he suffered a stroke at his home early last year.

Since his elevation to his current role along with Perlmutter in 2009, the dynamic former chief sales and marketing officer has been seen as a possible successor to CEO Paul Otellini. Industry analysts would not speculate on what effect his leave might have on the internal politics of Intel, where Otellini has held the top job since 2005. But it's clear that mobility, an area that has held great interest for Maloney, will play a key part in the company's work over the next few years.

Intel disclosed Maloney's medical leave on March 1 of last year. In June, at Computex 2010, Maloney appeared briefly on video during an Intel presentation and said he would be back at work by the end of the year.

He returned to Intel part time in January and has gradually worked his way back to nearly full-time duty, and is often seen on the company's campus, Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said Wednesday. Maloney's recovery is complete except for some speech therapy, he said.

"He's fit. He's doing well," Mulloy said.

At Intel's financial analyst conference on Tuesday, Maloney was in the audience during the main presentation and was not introduced. But later, he previewed his Computex keynote for a small group of industry analysts. Though he spoke more slowly than the rapid pace he's known for, he strode on stage and engaged the audience as always, according to analysts who attended the session.

"It is really phenomenal what he's done, because from what I hear, he came back from a very bad situation," said Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat. "He had to learn to talk. It's phenomenal to see the progress he's made."

Maloney, an enthusiastic advocate for Intel who has worked at the company since 1982, was seen by some observers as the most obvious candidate to replace Otellini. He is still one of two clear front-runners, along with Perlmutter, In-Stat's McGregor said. But the possible impact of Maloney's leave on Intel's future is hard to know, said Insight64 analyst Nathan Brookwood. "There's more doubt now about whether he would ... assume that CEO role at some future date than there was prior to the stroke," Brookwood said.

Some of the key tasks Intel now faces are in the area of mobile devices, which fall under Maloney and Perlmutter's purview as the guardians of the Intel processor architecture and have been a particular area of interest for Maloney. He was a key cheerleader for Wi-Fi and became the prime evangelist for mobile WiMax as it was standardized and commercialized in the latter part of the past decade.

Intel is now aiming at smartphones and tablets, regardless of the wireless technology they use, and trying to gain chip share in these fast-growing platforms, Brookwood said.

Since he returned to Intel, Maloney has been working to get the company focused on phone and tablet processors, Brookwood said. Intel's market share in both categories is negligible compared with the dominant ARM architecture used by most other mobile chip manufacturers. Most of the mobile ecosystem, including hardware designers and software developers, revolves around ARM, he said.

At least at Computex, Intel will go up against that rival with a man not unfamiliar with challenges.

First 'Gold' - Health, medical, and science updates, fitness ...

UC San Diego has been named the first college or university in California and one of only 10 campuses in the United States and Canada to earn a ?gold? sustainability-performance rating in a prestigious annual survey.

The rating is the outcome of the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) survey, which has been developed with broad participation from the higher education community and administered by the Association for the Advanc ement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The rating is designed not only to be transparent, but also to enable meaningful comparisons over time and across colleges and universities using a common set of measures developed by participating institutions themselves.

?This gold rating attests to the collaborative efforts made by our students, staff, faculty, and community members to pioneer sustainable solutions,? said UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. ?In the six years since I declared sustainabilitya top educational priority and goal of all campus operations, UC San Diego has been transformed into a living laboratory of sustainability solutions. From economics to mechanical engineering, academic departments have incorporated sustainability concepts into majors, minors, internships, classes and a wide range of research experiences.?

The gold STARS rating is one of many sustainability awards UC San Diego has won in recent years, including the 1st Annual Climate Leadership Award for Institutional Excellence in Climate Leadership, which was presented at the 4th Annual American College and University Presidents? Climate Commitment Summit in 2010.

UC San Diego?s gold STARS rating is based on the campus? performance in hundreds of measurements in three broad sustainability-focused categories: education and research, operations, and planning, administration and engagement.

The STARS survey stressed the submission of concrete metrics of performance by participating institutions. ?STARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,? said AASHE Executive Director Paul Rowland. ?UC San Diego has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS gold rating and is to be congratulated for its efforts.?

The survey gauges the percent of UC San Diego?s students who arrive on campus each day in something other than a private vehicle. The survey also includes such metrics as the square footage of building space that has been LEED certified by the U.S., Green Building Council. Expenditures on recycled-content paper versus expenditures on non-recycled-content paper also are compared.

Of the 269 institutions that have registered for the STARS survey, 12 have achieved a bronze rating, 26 got silver and 10 received gold. No college or university has yet achieved platinum.

The Backyard Homestead: Produce all the food you need on just a quarter acre!

?This is easily the most extensive sustainability survey of all of them, and it is easily the most objective,? said Gary C. Matthews, vice chancellor of Resource Management and Planning at UC San Diego. ?To be the first institution of higher education in California to get STARS gold is phenomenal and reflects the campus? deep commitment to sustainability. This starts with the chancellor and extends to all administrative and academic departments, right down to each student who decides each day whether to drive to campus or walk, ride a bike or takes a bus to campus. Our student interns helped with data collection for the STARS survey and it is they who will champion the cause for sustainability for many years to come as they clearly represent the future.?

Each credit in the survey is scored according to a method described in a technical manual provided by AASHE.

One of many areas of scrutiny in the education and research category is the number and variety of student groups and organizations that are focused on sustainability. Students at UC San Diego operate the Student Sustainability Collective, which functions as an umbrella group for a wide variety of student groups and initiatives focused on sustainability. The collective?s seven directors collaborate with the campus? Sustainability Program Office. The students and Program Office staff work side-by-side in an ultra-green suite of offices and meeting rooms at the heart of campus called the Sustainability Resource Center. Campus staff and students working at the center provide expertise, resources, support and space to faculty, staff, community groups and students of all backgrounds and majors who are leading sustainability efforts.

The STARS gold rating was also based on the campus? Housing Dining and Hospitality department?s student Econauts program, which was started in 2009 to assist in the environmental education and outreach to the students who live on-campus.

UC San Diego?s Dining Services contributed to the gold rating with its wide range of sustainable practices and items, such as trayless dining, vegan food entrees, recycled-content napkins, reusable mug discounts on beverages, pre- and post-consumer waste composting, and fair-trade coffee, tea and sugar.

Energy efficiency of campus buildings is an important part of the rating and is based on such parameters as the gross amount of energy consumed versus total square footage of the campus. Points are awarded in the survey for the campus? use of clean and renewable energy. Points were also given for energy-efficiency building and room controls such as motion sensors linked to controls that reduce lighting, heating and air conditioning in unoccupied areas.

The campus also scored well for controlling its use of water with ultra-low-flow urinals, water metering in each building, use of recycled water in landscaping, Xeriscaping and weather-informed irrigation.

Sustainability coordination and planning were strong areas in the rating as well, particularly relating to campus efforts to developing a strategic plan, a sustainability plan and a climate plan.

Innovative programs were also included in the gold rating for four projects:

One of the strongest fair-trade policies of any university in the nation.

Real-time energy monitoring campus-wide.

Development of sophisticated solar-energy-forecasting tools.

Cutting edge energy- and resource-efficient features in the campus? Sustainability Resource Center.
