The Surprising Subject of the First Book of Photographs

In these hyperlinked days, one might reasonably guess that the subject of the first book of photographs may have been along the lines of the True Purpose of the Internet (ask someone who?s seen ?Avenue Q? if you don?t know). Or if not that, perhaps cityscapes, or naval vessels, or still lifes, or battlefields. But no. The subject of the first book of photographs, published 1843, was algae.

Yes, algae. The filmy red/brown/green/golden stuff that washes up along many a beach and occasionally serves as the draperies of the underwater world. And not just any algae. British algae. I know. You can catch your breath now.

But what you may not realize is that algae are, in fact, quite beautiful, and never more so than when their diaphanous delights are on full display in a cyanotype, the type of photograph employed by Anna Atkins, the author of ?Photographs of British Algae?. That?s right. Not only did the first book of photographs contain cyanotypes of algae, it was produced by a woman. Her book is part of a collection in the Royal Society, which has just put on an exhibit of some of its choicest works called ?Treasures of the Royal Society Library?.

Anna Atkins was the daughter of John George Children, a scientist who worked in the British Museum?s Natural History Department. He taught her more about science that most girls could expect to learn in those days, and it seems to have sparked a life-long love in her. She and her father knew Sir John Herschel, the inventor of the cyanotype, and he, or someone who knew him, *cough*, exposed her to the new technique in about 1842 or 43.

Cyanotype is a photographic medium that uses ferric ammonium citrate, potassium ferricyanide, and simple sunlight to make an image. On exposure to ultraviolet light, the compounds react to form a dye called Prussian Blue, or ferric ferrocyanide. Ever wonder where cyanide got its name? This is it. Essentially, you put whatever you want to photograph on top of the paper. You expose it to the sun for 10-20 minutes. Then you rinse the paper in water to wash off the unreacted solution. Dry carefully. Art complete.

You can still make your own cyanotypes today, I believe, using kits like this one, which are often marketed to children as art projects. There is absolutely no reason they couldn?t be art projects for adults as well.

From what I can gather, Atkins simply took her collection of pressed, dried algae and cyanotyped them. Voila. The first book of photography. But what an inspired choice for the medium: because many algae are translucent to some degree, even when dried, her photographs of these life forms have a beautiful, ethereal elegance. With any object that is not translucent, the cyanotype process simply yields a sillhouette. With algae, or anything similarly thin, the cyanotype gives information about its thickness and translucency ? to beautiful effect.

Treasures of the Royal Society Library contains at least 30 selections of real rare books from the library?s 350 years of collecting. [begin cheesy infomercial music]It?s a Greatest Hits of Science from 1504 on,? including works by? Albrecht Durer, Gailleo Galilei, Robert Boyle (?The Sceptical Chymist?), Robert Hooke (?Micrographia?), Isaac Newton (?Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica?), Charles Lyell (?Principles of Geology?), Charles Darwin (?On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection?), and MANY more!! Act now ? time is limited. This special exhibit ends June 21, 2012 .

It?s enough to make a girl wish plane tickets between DIA and Heathrow didn?t cost nearly four figures [ducks shoes being thrown by readers in the Southern Hemisphere].

In any case, if you live anywhere in the vicinity of the Greater Europe Area, you have no excuse not to visit the Royal Society exhibit in the next few months and pay homage to some of the pillars of science in their original printed form, including ?Photographs of British Algae?, and a fascinating table of the causes of death for Londoners from the mid-1600s (?itch? and ?frighted? were apparently ways to go back then). For the rest of us, here are a selection of scanned images of Atkins?s book at the British Library and the New York Public Library. Of those, this one and this one are among my favorites. Enjoy.

And on a personal note, Merry Christmas, Happy Yule/Kwaanza/Hannukah/Festivus, and Ex-Post Facto Joyous Solstice. There was a small bright spot in my life recently: one of my posts was selected for inclusion in next year?s published blog anthology ?The Open Laboratory?, which you may have seen over at Jennifer Ouellette?s and Bora Zivkovic?s blogs. Yay! I?ll be a published author soon. That?s something to be thankful for.

France to pay for breast implant removal over cancer fear

From Naima Benallal, CNN

updated 5:15 PM EST, Wed December 21, 2011

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The French Health ministry is concerned over a possible cancer link
  • About 30,000 French women have implants made by PIP
  • PIP implants are not approved for use in the United States
  • British officials advise women concerned about implants to talk to their doctor

Paris (CNN) -- The French government will pay for tens of thousands of women to have silicone breast implants removed over concerns about a possible link to a rare form of cancer, the Ministry of Health said Wednesday.

French health authorities are due to make a recommendation Friday about whether women with implants by a company called Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP) must have them removed.

The ministry says about 30,000 French women have PIP implants, which are not currently approved for use in the United States.

According to a news release from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, PIP is now defunct. It says the company "used non-medical grade silicone believed by the manufacturers to be made for mattresses."

The French government agency that evaluates the safety of medical products says 523 women have had them removed since a defect was discovered last year.

More than 1,000 implants have ruptured since then, the agency says.

British authorities are advising caution over the implants but are not going as far as the French.

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said Tuesday it was "aware of the recent report in France of the death of a woman implanted with breast implants from anaplastic large cell lymphoma," which it called "a rare form of cancer which affects cells from the immune system."

It said it would "monitor for any associations of all types of breast implants, including PIP, with cancers and any other health implications."

But it did not advise women with PIP implants to have them taken out, saying more generally that "women with any type of breast implant... who have questions about their breasts or think that their implants may have ruptured, should seek clinical advice from their implanting surgeon."

A committee made up of representatives of several French health agencies was set up December 14 to discuss PIP implants.

Women will only be reimbursed for new implants if they were originally for reconstructive surgery, the Health Ministry said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration decided in March 2000 not to approve saline PIP implants in the United States. The company never submitted a marketing application for its silicone implants in the United States, the agency says.

CNN's Laura Perez Maestro and Miriam Falco contributed to this report.

Auto Talk: First Chinese car imported to North America built by? Honda?

The very first production car from China has made it to North America, though it?s not what you might think. In an effort to move more of its production out of Japan, Honda has begun manufacturing Fit models in the People?s Republic and importing them to Canada. There?s no indication that the vehicles will make their way to the U.S. in the future, however. While there are plenty of automakers who operate plants in China, only a fraction of the vehicles built there are made for export. Last year, only three percent were sent outside of the country?s borders.

Funk Flex

Honda and other Japanese manufacturers have begun investigating production facilities outside of the U.S. to combat the rising Yen, and Honda says that the company will begin producing Fit models in Mexico for U.S. customers soon. According to The New York Times, Honda may be reticent to test the American waters with a Chinese-built vehicle for fear of risking the company?s reputation for quality and reliability. That?s despite the fact that the company says Chinese-built Fit models are held to the same production quality standards as any Honda vehicle built elsewhere in the world.

NFL Playoff Scenarios: Lions Will End Playoff Hunt by Beating Chargers

You can call them what you want, but never consider the Detroit Lions as a bunch of procrastinators as they prepare to do away with the San Diego Chargers and subsequently waltz into the playoffs.?

The Lions come in with the weight of not playing in the playoffs since 1999, and will surely have that pressure pointed out to them in the cries and screams from the crowd at Ford Field.?

The Chargers will also have their fair share of tumult to overcome. Many will have you believe that the Chargers are a surging team, a hot squad that is on their way to closing out the season in fine fashion.?

That would be to negate the weeks of torture and dismal results that were sent their way. All that ineptitude will come flooding back the second that the Chargers have to deal with the Detroit Lions' pass rush.?

The Lions have their heads in the right place, and that is off the scoreboards. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said as much to ESPN.?

We need to beat the San Diego Chargers. We are not playing the out-of-town scoreboard. We are not playing anything other than the Chargers. The team does a good job of getting the focus each week, and that is what we need to go do this week. Everybody knows where we are. Everybody knows what is at stake.

The Chargers have finally welcomed back their quarterback Philip Rivers. While he physically went nowhere, this was definitely a different man mentally.?

The Chargers QB was the polar opposite of the usual poised and collected leader in the start of the season. He has come back to be the star arm we always expect, but the uglier version will return against a stiff defense that runs on killing quarterbacks.?

It's all about which version of the Chargers you think takes the field. The Chargers that lost six straight will be the ones taking on Detroit, and that means the Lions are playoff bound.?

Microsoft to drop Consumer Electronics Show

Robyn Beck / AFP - Getty Images

People walk past a Microsoft display before the opening of the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), January 6, 2010 in Las Vegas.

By Suzanne Choney

Microsoft says next month's 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the world's largest consumer technology trade show, will be its last as both a keynote presenter and exhibitor.

"We?ll continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the PC, phone and entertainment industries, but we won?t have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don?t align with the show?s January timing," said Frank X. Shaw, corporate vice president of Microsoft corporate communications, on the company's blog.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

Traditionally, Microsoft head honcho ? in times past, Bill Gates, and now Steve Ballmer ? has been the kick-off keynote speaker of the annual event, which drew more than 140,000 attendees last year, and will be held Jan. 9-13.

In a statement requested by msnbc.com,?the Consumer Electronics Association, which puts on CES,?made it sound like more of a mutual decision:

In the fourteen years that we have invited Microsoft to deliver a keynote address at CES, the company has unveiled some great innovations, from operating systems to gaming platforms to mobile technologies,? Both CEA and Microsoft have agreed that the time has come to end this great run, and so Microsoft will not have a keynote at the 2013 CES.?

When Microsoft talks about not having a "booth," that's not insignificant ? in the past, its booth has taken up pretty much an entire exhibit hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where part of CES is held. The company has also previously erected large tents on the convention center grounds as well.

Shaw said that Microsoft asked whether it was continuing to do the show "because it's the right thing to do, or because 'it's the way we've always done it?'"

The answer, he said, is, "As we look at all of the new ways we tell our consumer stories ? from product momentum disclosures, to exciting events like our Big Windows Phone, to a range of consumer connection points like Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft.com and our retail stores ? it feels like the right time to make this transition."

Steve Jobs made a similar decision for Apple, when he said starting in 2010 the company would no longer participate in the Macworld trade show. (Apple has never participated in CES, although its influence is definitely present.)

Microsoft, Shaw said, "has enjoyed a close-to-20-year working relationship with the Consumer Electronics Association," and "we look forward to working with CEA for many years to come."

Said CEA: "Microsoft is an important member of CEA and we wish them all the best as they evolve their plans for new ways to tell consumer stories.?"

As Gastric Banding Increases, So May Complications (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Use of gastric bands as a weight-loss aid is increasing, and doctors need to be alert for potential complications years later, say the authors of a new case report.

The report details problems that developed two years after a 49-year-old British woman underwent the weight-loss procedure. She sought treatment at a hospital after having night sweats and a persistent cough that produced green and yellow sputum for four months. Her medical history showed that she had asthma that had not responded to treatment and that she had been fitted with a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band in September 2008.

Gastric band surgery involves placement of a band around the top portion of the stomach. This creates a small pouch to receive food, which then slowly empties into the larger, lower stomach. Because of the band, people feel full after eating small amounts of food.

Since receiving the gastric band, the woman's body mass index (BMI) had decreased from 45 to 33, according to the report published in the Dec. 22 online edition of The Lancet. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese.

A chest X-ray revealed that the woman had a cavity within the left upper zone. After ruling out tuberculosis, the doctors suspected the woman's problems were caused by the gastric band.

The specific issues appeared to be repeated aspiration of ingested food (causing reflux down her windpipe and subsequent lung damage) and cavitation (holes formed in the lung, often due to infection) caused by the gastric band fitting, according to a journal news release.

After antibiotics provided only limited relief, doctors emptied the fluid from the gastric band. The woman's symptoms quickly vanished. At her last follow-up visit, after her gastric band was cautiously refilled, her BMI was 35 and she was still symptom-free, the investigators reported.

The report authors noted that band slippage and erosion are the most common complications in patients with gastric bands, while lung-related problems are rare.

But delayed lung complications "can present with asthma-like symptoms and can be misdiagnosed if not properly investigated," concluded Dr. Adam Czapran, of the department of respiratory medicine and coronary care at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, West Midlands, U.K., and colleagues.

"Patients who have undergone laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding should have chest radiography or thoracic CT scan, or both, if they present with respiratory symptoms," Czapran's team wrote in the journal news release. "Withdrawal of the fluid from the band should be done as soon as possible to relieve the obstruction. Given the increasing frequency of people undergoing interventional procedures to aid weight loss, recognition of the short-term and long-term complications is paramount."

The U.S. National Library of Medicine has more about laparoscopic gastric banding.
