Symantec confirms antivirus source code hack

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

Security software firm Symantec has confirmed that an Indian hacking group has gained access to the source code of the company's popular Norton Antivirus software, though it says the code relates to an older version of the software and cannot be put to malicious use.

Yesterday, a group called The Lords of Dharmaraja posted a document on Pastebin (now removed, but available from Google's cache) that it claimed contained confidential information relating to the Norton Antivirus source code. Norton Antivirus is one of the world's most popular antivirus software packages, relied upon by millions of computer users worldwide.

Symantec had originally dismissed the claims, saying the document actually contained publicly available information about their software dating from 1999. But later, a hacker known as Yama Tough provided security site Infosec Island with files that appeared to contain source code from the 2006 version of Norton Antivirus.

The site passed the code on to Symantec, who then confirmed in a statement that it was genuine. "Symantec can confirm that a segment of its source code used in two of our older enterprise products has been accessed, one of which has been discontinued," says the company, adding that this had no effect on the consumer versions of its products.

Symantec also says that the source code was not lifted from its own network, but from a yet unconfirmed third party. In their Pastebin release, The Lords of Dharmaraja claim they took the files from Indian military intelligence servers.

It is not yet clear how hackers might use the leaked source code or how much of it remains in new versions of the Symantec software. Rob Rachwald, of data security Imperva says that hackers already analysed most antivirus algorithms in an attempt to defeat them, and it might actually be Symantec's competitors that benefit most from access to the source code.

"If the source code is recent and hackers find serious vulnerabilities, it could be possible to exploit the actual anti-virus program itself," he says. "But that is a big if and no one but Symantec knows what types of weaknesses hackers could find."

The hack mirrors an attack last year on security firm RSA, which provides SecurID tokens used to grant access to corporate networks and online bank accounts. The attack may have ultimately lead to hack attempts on stealth-fighter maker Lockheed Martin and the International Monetary Fund, which both use the SecurID tokens.

Meanwhile, security firm Seculert has discovered a virus that has successfully stolen login details from over 45,000 Facebook accounts. The virus, dubbed Ramnit, was previously discovered by Microsoft in 2010 infecting Windows files and stealing passwords. It now seems to have "gone social" in order to acquire more victims.

Euro zone's economy slumps at year-end (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? The euro zone's economy deepened its downturn at the end of 2011 as retail sales fell and sentiment soured, but the first improvement in the business climate in 10 months offered hope that an expected recession may be mild.

Euro zone retail trade fell a worse-than-expected 0.8 percent in November from October, data from the European Union's statistics office Eurostat showed on Friday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 0.2 percent monthly fall.

Pointing to the cautiousness of European households, the European Commission said that in December consumer confidence fell 0.7 points in the 17 countries sharing the euro.

In its overall reading of economic sentiment in the euro zone, the Commission said its indicator fell 0.5 points to 93.3, its lowest level since November 2009.

"This data has recession written all over it," said Martin van Vliet, a euro zone economist at ING. "It is all but guaranteed that we are going to see a contraction in the euro zone in the fourth quarter," he said.

High unemployment is afflicting the euro zone, hurting consumers, and Eurostat said the bloc's joblessness rate was 10.3 percent of the working population in November, the same as October and up slightly from a year ago, when it was 10 percent.

The number of unemployed increased for the seventh consecutive month, while hiring intentions fell further in December, according the data.

That compared with an unemployment rate of 8.6 percent in the United States, Eurostat said.

One apparent bright spot in the data released on Friday was the improvement in the Commission's business climate indicator, which increased for the first time in 10 months as factory managers showed optimism about future production plans and export order books.

The indicator was -0.31 points in December, compared to -0.42 points in November and better than the -0.50-point reading seen by economists polled by Reuters for the month.

Unlike the euro zone's economy, which is expected to contract in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012, the U.S. economy is expected to grow about 2 percent in 2012, helping to increase export demand in Europe.

Australia: No higher risk from French implants

(AP) ? Australian health officials said they have found no evidence that potentially faulty French-made breast implants are at an increased risk of rupture in Australian women.

An expert panel of the Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia's medical watchdog, said in a statement late Wednesday that the silicone implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese ? or PIP ? have no higher risk of rupture than other silicone implants.

The PIP implants were made with cheap industrial silicone instead of medical grade silicone, and were banned last year in countries around the world after more than 1,000 women in France suffered ruptures.

Health experts across the globe have been trying to determine the health risk and whether to tell women to have the implants taken out. Last month, French officials said women with the implants should have them removed, with the government picking up the tab.

Rohan Hammett, National Manager of the TGA, said in a statement that all implants have a 10 percent risk of rupturing over a 10 year period after insertion. The current rupture rate of PIP implants in Australian women is approximately 0.4 percent, or 37 ruptures out of the 9,054 implants placed in Australian women between 2002 and 2011, Hammett said.

"While these figures are based only on reports to the TGA, this rate remains well within the expected performance of breast implants based on historical and international trend data," Hammett said. "Testing of PIP implants supplied in Australia by TGA in July 2010 indicated that the outer shell of the implant complied with international standards and regulatory requirements for strength and rupture resistance."

Lab testing of the silicone gel in the PIP implants had also indicated the gel was non-toxic to the tissue around the implant even if it does rupture, Hammett said.

"We know that breast implants won't last a lifetime in many women, and rupture is relatively common but the results of laboratory analysis both here and in the UK are reassuring in that even when rupture occurs the risk with PIP implants appears no different to other implants," Hammett said.

Concern over the devices increased after a handful of cases of a rare cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma were found in women who had the PIP implants. Hammett said the TGA had not received any reports of Australian women with PIP implants developing the cancer.

Computer accessory lets you navigate Windows 8 with your eyes (Yahoo! News)

Here's something that could make?Windows 8 a lot more fun to use?? a system that gives you the power to navigate the computer with your eyes.?Microsoft's newest operating system isn't commercially available yet, but Swedish company Tobii has long prepared for its arrival by tweaking its Gaze eye-tracking technology to work with the Windows 8 interface.

Gaze works by attaching an eye monitoring device that follows the movement of your eyes to the computer's USB port. An?onscreen indicator appears on the part of the screen you're looking at, and all you need to do is click the trackpad to launch a program or click a link.

The Windows 8 OS is designed not only for computers but also for?tablets and?smartphones. One of its?defining features is the Start Screen, which you can customize with application tiles and other widgets. Tobii claims that while the interface works well on a tablet with a touchscreen display, it doesn't feel natural scrolling through all the tiles on a computer screen using a trackpad.

The Gaze technology has previously been used for various medical applications, as well as to make the?world's first eye-controlled arcade game. Tobii will demonstrate Gaze for Windows 8 at the?Consumer Electronics Show that will take place on January 10 to 13.
