95% Argo

All Critics (240) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (229) | Rotten (11)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

A terrific supporting cast, especially the non A-list actors, make the dramatic license taken justified and redeem Affleck for miscasting himself in the hero's role.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

[A] gripping, beautifully performed and often very funny but dramatic thriller.

[Affleck] once again proves, as he did in The Town, that he's a pretty good actor but a great director.

Nailing the tension, the terror and the gallows humour of its story without resorting to jingoism or losing sight of its political context, Argo is a close-to-flawless thriller with a devilishly smart mouth.

10 Colleges With Largest Financial Endowments

The U.S. News Short List, separate from our overall rankings, is a regular series that magnifies individual data points in hopes of providing students and parents a way to find which undergraduate or graduate programs excel or have room to grow in specific areas. Be sure to explore The Short List: College and The Short List: Grad School to find data that matters to you in your college or grad school search.

In fiscal year 2011, Harvard University was more than $12 billion richer than any other college in the country.

The top-ranked National University's financial endowment was $32,012,729,000 in the 2011 fiscal year, the school reported to U.S. News in a 2012 survey. That figure was well above the fiscal-year average: Of the 1,189 ranked colleges that reported endowment figures to U.S. News, the average endowment was roughly $313,182,000.

[Explore the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings.]

Individual reports ranged from Harvard University on the high end to Providence Christian College's $15,000, the lowest reported endowment. Though Harvard's endowment far outpaced even the next-highest school on the list (Yale University, with $19,174,387,000), 66 ranked colleges had endowments of more than $1 billion each.

Most of the universities with the largest financial endowments are private universities. Just one public school, the University of Michigan--Ann Arbor, cracks this top 10 list. For the purposes of this list, endowments were examined by campus, not across public university systems. Unranked institutions, which do not submit enough data for U.S. News to calculate a ranking, were not considered for this report.

Some schools dip into endowment funds for financial aid awards, new campus programs, and more--and, sometimes, donors can give directly to the program they wish to fund. At Duke University, for instance, donors can give directly to funds such as scholarships and athletics programs.

[See which colleges give merit aid to the most students.]

Because schools spend some endowment income and principal on current operations that impact students, the figures reported can factor into the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings methodology, despite not being an explicit variable. "[S]chools with larger endowments tend to do better in the rankings' financial resources indicator than schools without any endowment," Director of Data Research Bob Morse wrote in a 2011 blog post. Financial resources per student accounts for 10 percent of a college's overall rank.

These 10 institutions had the most money in their endowments during fiscal year 2011.

U.S. News surveyed more than 1,800 colleges and universities for our 2012 survey of undergraduate programs. Schools self-reported a myriad of data regarding their academic programs and the makeup of their student body, among other areas, making U.S. News's data the most accurate and detailed collection of college facts and figures of its kind. While U.S. News uses much of this survey data to rank schools for our annual Best Colleges rankings, the data can also be useful when examined on a smaller scale. U.S. News will now produce lists of data, separate from the overall rankings, meant to provide students and parents a means to find which schools excel, or have room to grow, in specific areas that are important to them. While the data come from the schools themselves, these lists are not related to, and have no influence over, U.S. News's rankings of Best Colleges or Best Graduate Schools. The endowment data above are correct as of Nov. 27, 2012.

Congo rebels set conditions for Goma withdrawal

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo said on Tuesday they would withdraw from the eastern city of Goma only if President Joseph Kabila agreed to their demands, which the Congolese government was quick to dismiss as a farce.

The deadlock raises the risk that the eight-month-old insurgency could turn into an all-out war in a region dogged by nearly two decades of conflict that has killed more than 5 million people, fuelled by competition over mineral resources.

The M23 rebels, who U.N. experts say are backed by Rwanda and who say they want to "liberate" all of Congo, captured Goma last week after Congolese soldiers withdrew and U.N. peacekeepers gave up defending the city.

The Ugandan military, which has been coordinating talks with M23, said earlier on Tuesday that M23 leader Colonel Sultani Makenga had agreed to withdraw from Goma with no conditions.

But the political chief of M23, Jean-Marie Runiga, told reporters in Goma his forces would withdraw only if Kabila held national talks, released political prisoners and dissolved the electoral commission, a body accused by Western powers of delivering Kabila a second term in flawed 2011 polls.

"The withdrawal, yes. If Kabila agrees to our demands then we'll go quickly," Runiga told reporters in a hotel in Goma, flanked by senior M23 officials in civilian clothes and rebels in military fatigues.

Runiga said Kabila's government was rotten with corruption, lamented the country's dilapidated roads, and said Congo's only schools and hospitals had been left by Belgian former colonial rulers. He said any talks would have to tackle such issues.

"We want the involvement of the political opposition, civil society and the diaspora so we can tackle these issues together, so that the people hear the truth and that once and for all we find a solution to the problems that have poisoned our society and politics," he said.

"We are fighting to find solutions to Congo's problems. Withdrawal from Goma is not a precondition to negotiations but a result of them," he said.

The conflicting statements indicated a solution to the insurgency in eastern Congo, which has displaced 140,000 civilians according to the United Nations, was not close.

Lambert Mende, Congo's government spokesman, quickly dismissed M23's demands.

"It's a farce, that's the word. There's been a document adopted by the region. If each day they're going to come back with new demands it becomes ridiculous. We're no longer in the realm of seriousness," Mende told Reuters from Kinshasa.

Later in the day, Ugandan military chief Aronda Nyakayirima read out the withdrawal plan to reporters, but made no mention of M23's apparent rejection of the plan.

He said the plan specified M23 would begin its withdrawal on Tuesday, and government troops would enter Goma two days later, followed by a visit by regional defense chiefs "to evaluate the situation and find out whether all these timelines were met".

NO SIGN OF PULL-OUT

The rebels on Tuesday showed no signs of an imminent pull-out and continued to guard strategic sites in Goma.

More than half a dozen armed M23 fighters dressed in crisp fatigues stood in front of the central bank building as U.N. peacekeepers in two troop carriers looked on.

"This is a sign we are in this for the long haul. M23 is digging in while the Congolese army prepares another offensive," said Jason Stearns of independent research organization the Rift Valley Institute. "It is difficult to imagine what the possible compromise could be between the two sides," Stearns said.

African leaders had at the weekend called on M23 to abandon their aim of toppling the government and to withdraw from Goma. The Great Lakes heads of state also proposed that U.N. peacekeepers in and around the city should provide security in a neutral zone between Goma and new areas seized by M23.

Runiga also demanded the lifting of house arrest on a leading Kinshasa-based opposition member Etienne Tshisekedi as well as an inquiry into army corruption.

He said the rebels were ready to work with MONUSCO, the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo.

In a potential further escalation, Rwanda said on Tuesday its troops clashed with Rwandan FDLR rebels who attacked three villages on its border with Congo, but a spokesman for the FDLR denied its fighters had been involved.

Rwanda has in the past used the presence of the FDLR as a justification for intervening in neighbor Congo. But the rebel group, which experts say has dwindled in strength, has not mounted a significant attack on Rwanda in years.

Congo and U.N. experts accuse Rwanda of backing the M23 group in eastern Congo, which has big reserves of gold, tin and coltan, an ore of rare metals used in making mobile phones.

That is denied by Rwandan President Paul Kagame who has long complained that Kabila's government and U.N. peacekeepers have not done enough to drive out the FDLR from eastern Congo.

A study led by academics at the University of Bristol's Intelligent Systems Laboratory and the School of Journalism at Cardiff University have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to analyse 2.5 million articles from 498 different English-language online news outlets over ten months.

The researchers found that:

As expected, readability measures show that online tabloid newspapers are more readable than broadsheets and use more sentimental language. Among 15 US and UK newspapers, the Sun is the easiest to read, comparable to the BBC's children's news programme, Newsround, while the Guardian is the most difficult to read. 'Sport' and 'Arts' were the most readable topics while 'Politics' and 'Environment' were the least readable.

The Sun is also the most likely to use adjectives with sentiment, while the Wall Street Journal uses the fewest emotional adjectives.

The study found that men dominated the content of newspapers during the period analysed. The ranking of topics based on the gender bias of the articles found 'Sport' and 'Financial' articles were the most male biased, with sports news mentioning men eight times more often than women. 'Fashion' and 'Arts' were the least biased, with 'Fashion' articles being one the few topics featuring equal proportions of men and women.

The most appealing topics to online readers were 'Disasters', 'Crime', and the 'Environment' while the least appealing topics were 'Fashion', 'Markets' and 'Prices'. The researchers also found that the popular articles tend to be more readable and more linguistically subjective.

Nello Cristianini, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bristol, speaking about the research, said: "The automation of many tasks in news content analysis will not replace the human judgement needed for fine-grained, qualitative forms of analysis, but it allows researchers to focus their attention on a scale far beyond the sample sizes of traditional forms of content analysis."

Professor Justin Lewis, Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff, added: "Even some of the more predictable findings give us pause for thought. The extent to which news is male dominated shows how far we are from gender equity across most areas of public life. The fact that articles about politics are the least readable might also explain widespread public disengagement."

The study is published online in Digital Journalism.

Discovering the Community: The Schoolyy Show | Spreaker's Corner

Donald Schoolyy Johnson is the host of The Schoolyy Show, bringing you all the latest news in?gaming, sports, and technology, with a little music in the mix. We spoke to him on how he fell into the wide world of podcasting:

Do you mind introducing yourself?

Hello, my name is Donald ?Schoolyy? Johnson and I host a talk show here on Spreaker weekdays at 11 AM PDT. I served in the US Air Force for 8 years, and am currently a Federal Officer for The Department of Homeland Security. I am from Southern California, but have traveled to many places around the world. I enjoy promoting and helping others and am active in the Call of Duty Competitive Gaming Community (eSports). My focus in the CoD competitive gaming community is the CoD ladies where I strive to promote and showcase their skills through different events I host that are broadcasted live.

How did you get into the world of broadcasting?

I got into the world of broadcasting mid July 2011 where I would live stream and commentate game play from Call of Duty competitive players. After hosting and broadcasting many online events I found it to be extremely enjoyable and with so much positive feedback, it motivated me to do more in the community and continue broadcasting.

Cool! How did you start podcasting? Had you already been doing it before?coming to Spreaker?

Before live streaming I didn?t podcast but would often listen to many podcasts on the web. While I enjoyed the many podcasts I listened to, I didn?t find any that incorporated good music with tech and gaming reviews as well as other topics in the different gaming communities. I decided I?d try and bring that to anyone who would listen to my podcast. I surfed the web and found Spreaker to be the most user friendly for setting up and doing podcasts. From there I started the radio show The Schoolyy Show?in May 2012.

We?re glad you found us!?How do you pick the topics for your podcasts?

Picking topics for podcasts can be difficult at times, but fun as well. I tend to try and be creative coming up with my own topics that listeners can relate to, but being part of a gaming community as well as being a techie often makes things easier since many topics can come from gaming and new tech products.

Any favorite episodes from your own podcast??

My favorite episode so far is a series I did called Military Talk, where I took listeners on a journey with my experiences in the US Air Force. I enjoy talking about my experiences in the military as those times were some of the best times in my life.

Do you use Spreaker?s interactive features to chat with your fans?

I definitely use Spreaker?s interactive features to connect with my fans. It is a great way to connect fans on a personal level and another way to keep them interested and coming back to listen again. I love the feedback fans give through the interactive features as well, it gives me an opportunity to hear what they want from my broadcasts.

What do you do to reach listeners? Do you rely on social media, or do
you use other channels of communication?

To reach out to listeners I rely on my social media networks. I often post on my website, Twitter and Facebook allowing friends, family and fans to know that I?m going live or that I am live so they can stop by and tune in.

Has this podcast helped you personally or professionally?

This podcast has definitely helped me personally and professionally. It has given me the opportunity to bring another side of me to fans as well as a new way to build a fan base and reach out to more people.

Awesome! Anything else you?d like to share?

I want to thank Spreaker for this awesome interview. I appreciate your continued support for all of us podcaster?s here on Spreaker. For you listeners, thank you for your support and feedback, I appreciate it as well. Don?t forget to tune in to the show weekdays at 11 AM PDT. For more information on gaming events I host and more, visit my website at www.SchoolyyD.com. You can also keep up with things I?m involved with by following me on Twitter @Schoolyy. For all other links I?m associated with visit about.me/donjon247.

Thanks for talking to us Donald!?

Resident Evil: Revelations listed for consoles | Games industry news ...

A console port for Capcom's well received 3DS effort Resident Evil: Revelations appears to be in the works for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Eurogamer reports PS3 and 360 versions of the game were recently listed on the Korean Ratings Board.

Revelations launched earlier this year on 3DS, and if the ports do come about, they?ll likely be the last of this console generation for the franchise. The next major title is likely a long while off, following last month?s release of Resident Evil 6.

Capcom has thus far declined to comment on the matter.
